Frans says he didn’t call directly for no separation of church, state
PHILIPSBURG--Commissioner Frans Richardson, in a phone call from Germany on Wednesday, said it wasn't he, but his colleague Commissioner Hyacinth Richardson, who had made direct comments about no separation of church and state in St. Maarten, and he had been "grouped" wrongfully with the statement. Frans said he had only alluded to it. Frans issued a press release in which he once again defended Government's decision to build a Methodist chapel for NAf. 500,000 and pointed out that it had been a unanimous decision by the Executive Council. He also indicated what he had said at the groundbreaking ceremony for the new chapel in Belvedere last week Saturday.[More....]
A MEETING CALLED TO GET CLARITY FROM GOVERNMENT ON ITS POLICY REGARDING SUBSIDIES TO INSTITUTIONS TURNED INTO A BIG JOKE.
SMNN - Philipsburg:---The Central Committee meeting was requested by the Democratic Party to hear from the Executive Council regarding its position on (incidental) subsidies/investments. The granting of subsidies by government is regulated by the Subsidy Ordinance St. Maarten and the subsidizing of religious institutions regulated by the State Regulation (Staatsregeling).
This meeting was requested by the DP, considering the public spat between government and organizations such as the Carnival Foundation and the Heineken Regatta Organizers. In answering the Democratic Party Faction's questions on the budget, the government had also informed the Island Council that for the information requested on the subsidy to the Foundation for Government Buildings, the Island Council(!) should contact the Foundation's president, Mr. Kurt Ruan. Now imagine that.
Richardson promises to tackle issues in agriculture ‘head on’
PHILIPSBURG--Health Commissioner Hyacinth Richardson says he plans to tackle the issues affecting agriculture in St. Maarten and is working to revive the dormant Agricultural Station. He made the statement in his message on the occasion of World Food Day being observed today, Friday. He also urged the population to focus on healthy eating habits. World Food Day was established by the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organisation in 1979 and is observed annually. This year’s theme is: “Achieving food security in times of crisis.” [More....]

Philipsburg:---The Theme for 2009 is “Achieving food security in times of crisis”. Every country should strive in one way or the other to encourage agriculture so that in times of crisis we would be able to feed ourselves. Many years ago the government of St.Maarten was very much involve in Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Fisheries. We had an agricultural station where much was done under the leadership of an Agricultural expert. During the last 30 -40 years there has been little or no government involvement in the Agriculture sector.[More....]

Pointe Blanche: --- Workers of the Ambulance Department were with all smiles on Wednesday when they drove away with a brand new ambulance for the department. Head of the Ambulance Department Clyred Richardson said receiving another ambulance in such a short time is history for St. Maarten since only some weeks ago they received the first of the two vehicles that was ordered at Wheelco Deliveries in Miami and cost the island government a whopping $70,000. The vehicle he said is fully equipped with the necessary emergency equipments. Richardson said the commissioner of public health Hyacinth Richardson was very instrumental in making sure the vehicles arrived here in working order. He said the purchase of both ambulances was part of the island government budget. With the arrival of the new ambulance the department now has four ambulances.[More....]
LABOUR POLICY AMENDMENTS RATIFIED --BOASMAN MANDATE LIFTED.
SMNN - Philipsburg:---The amendments made to the revised labour policy by the National Alliance/Heyliger and Laveist executive council have been approved by the Governor General of the Netherlands Antilles confirmed commissioner of labour Hyacinth Richardson.
Richardson said the amendments to the revised labour policy are now in effect. The commissioner also said that the governor general also approved the recommendations of the executive council to uplift the mandate of head of labour Raphael Boasman. Richardson said he is not sure if Boasman were notified that he no longer has the power to sign labour permits, however Boasman would be notified before the end of the week. He said all labour permits have to be approved and signed off by the executive council.
Hyacinth: Use education to combat condom use taboo
The Daily Herald - COLE BAY--Health Commissioner Hyacinth Richardson says efforts should be made to educate the population about the benefits of condom use to combat reservations that exist about the use of the contraceptive.
The commissioner was at the time addressing participants of two-day workshop on condom programming, which opened on at Carl’s Unique Inn on Thursday.
National Alliance party council to meet this weekend
PHILIPSBURG - The spirit of the National Alliance that was rekindled during the Retreat last Saturday, has prompted the president of the interim board, Mr. Dexter Doncher, to call the Party council together for deliberations on the recent decision by Prime Minister of the Netherlands Antilles Emily de Jong Elhage, that Parliamentary elections will be held in 2010. It is a decision that has serious consequences for the proper, timely and expedient preparations for country Saint Martin. [More....]
Youth Health Care gives presentation to Principals of schools, Commissioner H. Richardson hands out certificates
PHILIPSBURG - Yesterday afternoon at 4:12 pm on the first of September 2009, at the Government Administration Building in the Claude Wathey Legislative Hall, there was a presentation by the Preventative Health Department for the principals of all schools on the school programs of Youth Health Care. These programs are the dental and vaccination & screening. In addition the changes in the vaccination schedules were also discussed.[More....]
WIFOL: Basics of labour permit policy still intact
PHILIPSBURG - The sweeping proposed changes to the employment permit policy announced at Monday's Island Council meeting have not changed the fundamentals of the policy, says Worker's Institute for Organised Labour (WIFOL) President Theophilus Thompson. He said four meetings had been held with Labour Commissioner Hyacinth Richardson since he took office. Two of them were introductory meetings and two tripartite committee meetings that specifically dealt with the new policy. [More....]
