St. Maarten lives on

“St. Maarten will live on”: a CD launch that according to the composer, Jeffrey Richardson, will be an evening “centered on educating the audience about the history of St. Maarten and encouraging persons to become more patriotic about their country St. Maarten.” Sounds like an admirable, positive and edifying event? Perhaps, … until you find out that it is to take place in the Westin Resort! SXM Island Times - PHILIPSBURG - Duck International Ltd. will have to break down one of Coral Beach Club's villas and remove the top floor of the Oyster Pond resort's main building within one month. The resort opened its doors in December 2007.
In its ruling of Tuesday, May 12, the Court of First Instance imposed a penalty of US $5,000 per day in case of non-compliance, with a maximum of $1 million for each building.
The Court ruled that Duck International would have to transport the debris to the landfill and pay the cost of the legal procedures. Last week's ruling came after a lengthy legal battle between Duck International and long-time Oyster Pond resident Hendrikus Hager, who saw his terrace ocean view blocked by what he deemed to be the illegal construction of several buildings.
