SHTA applauds Commissioner Marlin for obtaining funding for SBO.

SMNN - Philipsburg: ----The SHTA is commending leader of Government, Commissioner William Marlin for obtaining necessary funding to realize the development of a new Secondary Vocational School (SBO) on St. Maarten.
Apart from awarding scholarships for colleges and universities abroad, the SHTA has been encouraging Government to use available EU or Dutch funding to develop a Vocational Poly-technical/ Hospitality Training Institute on St. Maarten that could provide the local population with the training, skills and certification necessary to successfully enter the job market. This, the SHTA believes would not only protect the local workforce, but would reduce the need for businesses to seek foreign labor.

PHILIPSBURG - The SHTA on Wednesday extended its condolences to the family of Eric Yuan Sam, the latest in a series of murders in 2009. In the SHTA’s end of year voice published on December 28, 2009, the SHTA listed its top 5 wishes for 2010, which concerned some of the most pressing issues affecting St. Maarten. GEBE UPDATES SHTA HOTELS ON STRATEGIC PLANS.

SMNN - COLE BAY—GEBE representatives attended the SHTA General Managers’ Retreat on Friday, November 13 to update Hotel Managers on the challenges that are being faced in the GEBE operations on St. Maarten, Saba and Statia as well as projects and strategic plans that address these challenges on the short, medium and long term.

GEBE Managing Director, William Brooks, was originally scheduled to give the presentation but was out due to illness. In his absence, Steve Duzanson, Commercial Manager, and Giselle Dirckx-Williams, Corporate Communications Officer, outlined the current and future challenges in the company as well as the solutions being worked on in the power supply, to upgrade customer service and to create clarity on the fuel clause.

Central Bank Director delivers key-note address at SHTA meeting

SXM Island Times - PHILIPSBURG - Director of the Central Bank of the Netherlands Antilles drs. Emsley Trump, delivered the keynote address on Friday evening at the SHTA general membership meeting which was held at the Great Bay Beach Hotel.

MARIGOT--The St. Maarten Hospitality and Trade Association (SHTA) and the French-side hotel association AHSM Tuesday urged the island’s two tourist boards and relevant elected officials to work together and with their private sector counterparts. “Teamwork and cooperation are more important now than ever before and the risks far too great to idly accept ‘business as usual,’” the associations said in a statement. SXM Island Times - PHILIPSBURG - In reading recent articles regarding the state of the relationship between the French and Dutch side Tourist Offices and officials, Maurice Perrinmarechal, Philippe Thevenet and Stephen Wright of the Association des Hoteliers de St Martin (AHSM) met with its Dutch counterparts: Emil Lee, Keith Graham and Robert Dubourcq of the SHTA on Thursday October 15, 2009 to clarify their position and show solidarity and joint commitment to the island.

SXM Island Times - PHILIPSBURG - The Dollar-A-Day project established by the St. Maarten Hospitality & Trade Association has contributed to a number of key events this past month.

The first involves a donation of $950 to The Love of Kids Foundation towards the visit of Dr. Joseph Jennings to conduct a series of lectures regarding gang violence, drug and alcohol abuse and abstinence from sex.

Heyliger, SHTA discuss ring road project plans

PHILIPSBURG - Commissioner responsible for Public Works Theo Heyliger assured the St. Maarten Hospitality & Trade Association (SHTA) that sufficient research was conducted on the ring road project to avoid any dangerous situation occurring during or after its construction. The commissioner met with the SHTA yesterday. SHTA invited the commissioner to its board meeting to gain a better perspective regarding the effects the ring road may have on the community, parking and traffic, the amount of research that went into development, financing as well as environmental impacts. The SHTA was concerned that the construction of the ring road may decrease the capacity of Great Salt Pond and increase the risk of flooding.[More....]
