Great Bay: --- St. Maarten's commissioner in charge of economic affairs, is clarifying an apparent mix-up which was at the core of an article published in the Today Newspaper of Wednesday, February 17. The article in question mentioned that data on the government website, investsxm.com, is heavily outdated and how island council lady Maria Buncamper-Molanus stresses the importance of economic indicators. According to the commissioner, however, the article is not only inaccurate but also incomplete.[More....]

Philipsburg:---The Island Government, similar to any organization or for that matter a household can have many plans to achieve its objectives and carryout its obligations but to do so, one of the tools it needs to be effective and efficient is a budget. A budget that has been explained to all the members will without a doubt garner even better support, and may even result to all hands on deck during inevitable challenges we will face. It is in this light of "clarification" that Island Council Member Mrs. Maria Buncamper-Molanus submitted a letter to her fellow Island Council Member and Chairman of the Central Committee, Mr. George Pantophlet, with a list of questions on St. Maarten's draft budget 2010.[More....]

Philipsburg - While we have shifted into first gear on the "paved" road to country status, the dust has not settled on the back roads, where day to day challenges remain a balancing act for local government officials. Officials who should give sufficient attention and public accountability on various tasks that affect our (business) community directly. This is no different for St. Maarten's Local Chief of Police, Lt. Council woman Buncamper request Economic Indicators from ExCo
SXM Island Times - PHILIPSBURG - Island Councilmember Maria Buncamper-Molanus has directed a letter to the Executive Council requesting the government to provide economic indicators to the Island Council and the general public. Buncamper-Molanus states in her letter, “The media is once again reporting how difficult it is to obtain information regarding the economic activity on the island.
This concern, as you are well aware, has been questioned by me on several occasions. During my tenure as Commissioner of Economic Affairs among others, the economic indicators were handled with the utmost importance and published as soon as they were verified and approved by the Executive Council, because it was understood how essential this information was and is for proper planning of sustainable economic development”.

PHILIPSBURG - When the Democratic Party of St.Maarten presented their list of 11 candidates on Monday afternoon, they do so in the absence of former Commissioner, Council Woman Maria B. Molanus. The Council Lady is also a former Senator in the parliament of the Netherlands Antilles. Speaking to PJD2 news department on Monday, leader of the Democratic Party, Sarah W Williams stated that it was the party’s decision including that of Maria B. How tough is too tough-Tax collection strategies on St. Maarten
SXM Island Times - PHILIPSBURG - The Democratic Party faction in the Island Council would like to know if the NA/Heyliger Executive Council of St. Maarten intends to revisit the current tax collection policy considering the economic reality of St. Maarten.
In the absence of any real relief or economic stimulus for established businesses on the local market, the question being raised is whether businesses on the island are experiencing an unreasonable amount of pressure to pay up.
Is Government committed to finalizing the work on the National Health Insurance – Buncamper Molanus.
SMNN - Former Public Health Commissioner Maria Buncamper-Molanus is concerned is asking what the status of the efforts made to establish a national health insurance system on St. Maarten.
The councilwoman told the media that after having engaged a Dutch Consulting firm which delivered it’s finding in 2007 and having established a NHI committee, steering group, having several stakeholder meetings and the engagement of an actuary to prepare scenario models, the expectation is that Government has information to share with us to share with the Island Council.
Maria urges movement on building code amendments
The Daily Herald - PHILIPSBURG-- Island Councilmember Maria Buncamper-Molanus said on Monday that although no clear picture has been provided by the NA/Heyliger government regarding its intention with respect to the proposal amending the building code ordinance, government should act on suggestions put forward by the DP faction.
The amendment of the building ordinance, as suggested by law firm Lexwell N.V., would provide the Island Government with the authority to have owners of severely derelict buildings repair these buildings or demolish them and face fines of Naf 3,000 and two months’ imprisonment.

SXM Island Times - PHILIPSBURG - Member of the Island Council Maria Buncamper-Molanus, after much persistence and exchange of words on the floor of the Island Council between herself and the Commissioner responsible for Labour affairs, finally received answers to several questions posed on August 20th.
During the last meeting of the Island Council, October 2nd, the Council lady expected to receive these answers as they were relevant to the topic being discussed and because she had repeatedly reminded the Executive Council that the answers were still pending.
