New French law calls for vehicle registration
SXM Island Times - MARIGOT - Motorists on French St. Martin are now being advised that they will have to comply with new registration rules that will go into effect on the 1st of June 2010.
The Government of St. Martin announced that they will be implementing a new system of registration for motor vehicles (car and motorcycle), for the territory of St. Martin.
Qualifying motorist will be given a new registration number and a new certificate (ex-logbook) that will go into effect from 1st June 2010. The new certificates will be issued gratuitously a government release stated.
EXCO APPROVES TRANSITION APPROACH FOR NEW MINISTRY OF TOURISM, ECONOMY, TRAFFIC AND COMMUNICATIONS

GREAT BAY:--- St. Maarten's Executive Council on Tuesday approved proposals for the transition approach regarding tasks for the new ministry of tourism, economic affairs, traffic and telecommunications for country St. Maarten. The Executive Council also approved an overview provided of the transfer of legislation by the Netherlands Antilles to the new ministry as well as the terms of the required legislation, Central Government tasks, policy, work instructions and procedures per department of the new ministry.[More....]
Frans: Taxis need not worry about Changing Lanes project
The Daily Herald - PHILIPSBURG--Commissioner of Public Transportation Frans Richardson says taxi drivers need not worry about the implementation of the Changing Lanes project, as it will not affect them directly.
Changing Lanes specifically refers to regulating congestion in Philipsburg caused by the unregulated bus service. Richardson said Front and Back Streets being closed off would only affect buses. Taxi drivers will be allowed to transport the island's visitors.
SHTA endorses initiative to improve Public Transportation system
SXM Island Times - PHILIPSBURG - The SHTA is commending Transportation Commissioner Frans Richardson and the entire Executive Council for taking the necessary steps to address and improve the current transportation system with the Changing Lanes project.
Although the SHTA has not seen the final proposal, the project, scheduled to be complete in 2012 (barring any unforeseen circumstances), includes major infrastructural improvements such as bus terminals, bus stops, signage and lighting, expanding bus routes, addressing gypsies and decreasing traffic congestion.
Gas price goes up on Saturday.

Man robbed by two men in Gypsy.

Philipsburg:---On Tuesday April 6th, a Haitian national with the initials E.J. filed an official report with the detective department stating, that on Monday April 5th at approximately 08.00 p.m. he had taken a Gypsy ride from Philipsburg to Sucker Garden. He further stated that when he stepped in to this car, there were three other young men in the car.[More....]
Four Injured in Vehicular Accident --- Excessive Speed Caused Major Damage to Several Vehicles.
SMNN - Peters:--- The traffic department is busy investigating a multiple car accident, which left at least four persons injured. The accident occurred on Tuesday afternoon at the entrance of St. John's Estate reported Police Spokesman Ricardo Henson.
The police spokesman said several police patrols along with then fire and ambulance responded to the scene when the accident occurred. At least one person Henson said had serious injuries to the face and had to be admitted to the St. Maarten Medical Center for further treatment and observation.
Patrick Illidge officially confirmed as minister

WILLEMSTAD--Patrick Illidge of the National Alliance (NA) will be the new Minister of Traffic and Communication. Illidge, who serves as a state secretary for public health, was tipped for NA's second ministerial post in the Emily de Jongh-Elhage II Cabinet, but this was never confirmed by party leader Commissioner William Marlin.
Illidge was among the new cabinet members whose names were announced by Governor of the Netherlands Antilles Fritz Goedgedrag Tuesday afternoon after Formateur Pedro Atacho submitted his report on the new government.
Blue Mall puts US $1M into road improvement
The Daily Herald - CUPECOY--Blue Mall-Blue Residences, a multi-million dollar project in Cupecoy, will pump US $1 million into the upgrading and recreation of a large section of Rhine Road, the main access road to the high-end mall and residences.
Blue Mall developers said this investment was necessary to improve the driving experience and overall safety for residents and island visitors, who ultimately would be shoppers in the mall. The road upgrading will start in the near future.
COM Aborted Road Tax for New Vehicle tax System --- No Information says Gumbs.
SMNN - Marigot: --- President of the MOCSAM Julien Gumbs is once again sounding the alarm about the possible road tax. Gumbs in an exclusive interview with SMN News said that while the window that is supposed to be collecting the road tax is closed since October 2009 to date the Collectivity and its representatives has not seen it fit to update its population on the reason why they stopped collecting the tax which is supposed to be used for road developments.
