Health Commissioner and SMMC Medical Director Announces Two New Gynecologists

GREAT BAY (GIS)— Commissioner of Health Hyacinth Richardson and the medical director of St. Maarten medical center announced on Friday the arrival of two new gynecologists who would begin working at the St. Maarten Medical Center as early as Monday. Commissioner Richardson, said that he has had many deliberations with stakeholders to ensure optimal gynecology and obstetrics care on St. Maarten thus enabling his staff to secure the additional specialists. Richardson said the first of the two much needed specialists will begin working as of Monday March 15. The commissioner said he is aware that the medical institution would need more specialists and they are continuing to work towards finding a permanent solution for the island people to achieve better medical care.[More....]
DP raises questions about gynecological care on St. Maarten
PHILIPSBURG - The Democratic Party (DP) of St. Maarten sent a letter to the Executive Council of St. Maarten through the Chairman, Lt. Governor Franklin Richards. The letter addresses the concerns of the party about the diminishing state of gynecological care on St. Maarten, pointing out that the Executive Council is responsible for a proper functioning health care system on the island.[More....]
Inspectorate VSA makes stipulations for supermarkets, grocery stores.
SMNN - GREAT BAY (GIS)—The Inspectorate Department of Public Health, Social Welfare and Labor is intensifying their controls with regards to the labeling of food products.
The managers and owners of all Supermarkets, Grocery stores, Bakeries, Distributors and any other food outlets, should be aware of the law, stipulated as: Landsbesluit, Houdende Algemene Maatregelen, of the 18th of January 2005, Article 3 (1 a, f and j) of the Commodities Act, P.B. 1997 Nr. 334.
DRASTIC PLASTIC

The following statement was issued by The Royal Society towards the end of 2009: "Since the millennium, we have produced nearly as much plastic as in the prior half-century. Next year, 300 million tonnes of plastic will be manufactured worldwide and one-third of all plastics will go into packaging.” If that statement doesn’t sound very worrying, then think again, because it should scare the hell out of you.

PHILIPSBURG - Every year the pension and wage limit for Sickness and Accident Insurance (ZV/OV) are adjusted in accordance to the development of the cost of living (price index). The adjustment is based on the increase of price index of August of the preceding year. The Social Insurance Bank in accordance to the law sent a proposal to the central government regarding the increase of the wage limits, old age pension and widows and orphans pension. According to the calculations of the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) cost of living increased by 3.6 %. This means that the wage limit for 2010 is Nafl. 4.764,50 per month.[More....]
Hospital waiting for permits for major expansion in January
The Daily Herald - AY HILL--St. Maarten Medical Center (SMMC) is ready to start one of its biggest expansions to date in January, but is yet to receive two building permits: one for the expansion and the other to renovate its radiology department.
The application for the permit to expand was filed eight months ago, in April, and up to yesterday, Wednesday, SMMC hadn’t received any indication when the permits would be issued.

SMNN - Sandy Ground: -- The parents, relatives, teachers, and students of Sandy Ground Primary all have questions that are yet to be answered about the sudden death of 11-year-old Olivier Laurence Simon.
His mother Catherine Simon in an interview with SMN News said her son fell ill on November 27 2009. Simon said her son told her he ate something in school that day and he began having belly pains and was feeling extremely tired. Simon said she told her son to take a nap since he also played football that day. The next morning she said Olivier woke up with a fever and was vomiting. She said she took him to see a doctor located at the Marina Fort Royale and this doctor told her the child had dengue and he gave her a prescription to buy some medication.
DP wants matters of SVB/BZV workers and Windward Island Health Care Union on agenda of Central Committee
SXM Island Times - PHILIPSBURG - The Democratic Party of Sint Maarten has recommended that 2 letters which were copied to the Island Council be sent to the Central Committee of the Island Council for further deliberations.
One letter dated November 5, 2009 was sent by the workers of the SVB and the BZV on St. Maarten to the Executive Council regarding their position as employees of these institutions.
Relatives of Dead Woman Files Claims Against SMMC, and Two Gynecologists.

Cay Hill:--- The St. Maarten Medical Center and two of its gynecologists would soon have to represent themselves in the court of law as the relatives of Jennifer Sorhaindo has filed a claim against the hospital and two of the gynecologists with the Inspector of Health. Reliable sources said the relatives of the deceased filed the claim with the inspector of health that is based on Curacao. Jennifer Sorhaindo (37) died during the early hours of Wednesday November 19 at the St. Maarten Medical Center one week after she terminated her pregnancy at one of the doctor's clinic at the hospital.[More....]
