Driving home from work I treated myself to the scenic lowlands route. Passing the Rainbow construction site I wondered how high this thing is gonna be. The Rainbow website has been shut down for a while now but I can clearly recall having seen artist impressions detailing about 5 floors somewhere. I counted 8 today and it is clear that more will be added. How many? Is there anybody that knows? And then the legend of the Tower of Babel crossed my mind.

There are many versions of this legend the most popular one being how the settlers came to the land of Shinar and decided to build a tower so high it might reach unto heaven as a rebellion against the sovereignty of God. But God miraculously confounded the languages of those who were working at its building so that they could not understand each other, and the project failed. It is not mentioned in the Genesis account that God directly destroyed the efforts of the builders; presumably, the building fell into disrepair. However, several other ancient versions (Book of Jubilees) do state the tradition that God overturned the tower with a great wind. Also according to others the tower was overthrown by the winds.
I don't know why but I have this feeling of similarity when I look at Rainbow and think about the legend of the tower of Babel. It looks like floors are being added to reach unto..uh..unto where exactly? Good question. Maybe nobody knows because those who work at the building all speak a different language. Not a remote possibility nowadays. Rainbow so far didn't clarify although they had ample opportunity when challenged. Why? To defy social checks and balances maybe? As a rebellion against all citizens who dared to ask questions about this concrete clutter monstrosity?
Hurricane season is on the way and the great winds are coming. It is predicted that the 2007 Atlantic hurricane season will have about 9 hurricanes (average is 5.9), 17 named storms (average is 9.6), 85 named storm days (average is 49.1), 40 hurricane days (average is 24.5), 5 intense (Category 3-4-5) hurricanes (average is 2.3) and 11 intense hurricane days (average is 5.0). On top of that, there is above-average major hurricane landfall risk in the Caribbean. You can read more about it here and here.
For the wellbeing of all I hope the great winds spare our Island. But if they don't.. oh well...it is one of those things we have to live with and it can certainly be a thorough clean up in many ways. Fortunately we have never suffered any victims. It is said that history repeats itself. Let's see if the great winds are favorable this year.
