Hurricane Season 2007
I've never really understood why the media gives Dr. William Grey and his predictions as much credance as they do, whilst he may be an expert at studying the weather and hurricanes, an expert at predictions he is not. Jeff Masters over on the Weather Underground explains this clearly, the only thing that is reliable about his predictions is that they get more accurate with each update as the season gets closer/older.
Dr. William Grey is one of the few scientists who doubt mankind's contribution to Global Warming, he forecasts that the oceans will start to cool within the next few years. If only his predictions were more reliable.

2005 was a record breaking year, 2006 was a dud, mainly due to El Nino and perhaps saharan dust, which both serve to hinder storm formation. This year we have La Nina, which does not, we also have warmer than average sea temperatures. Here's my prediction for the coming season. Dr. William Grey will have to revise his predictions again, upwards.

Not a hurricane this time but a massive earthquake hit SXM at around 3:30pm this afternoon.
Most people on the island in all districts felt and heard this massive quake, sounded like a loud truck outside the buildings -a loud roaring sound.
I did not see any structural damages to buildings in Philipsburg, heard that some small items fell off walls at someones house but otherwise no major damages- at least not from reports reaching me.
I have not heard anything from the French side as yet.
Reports are saying that the quake hit a high 7.something on the richter scale.
Several of my flooring ceramic tiles were cracked from one end of the house to the other.I live high in Weymouth Hill so perhaps that is why. Scared the hell out of me. I am from California and the hgihest scale I have had was 6.9, hopefully no aftershocks.

Please use the blog just posted about the quake for further comments on it, cheers!

Two months ago I wrote a blog post entitled Hold onto your hat! where I reported that this year is shaping up to be a major hurricane year. It comes as no surprise to me when the Atlantic's first named storm of 2007 forms early.

La Nina, which means "little girl" in Spanish, is an unusual cooling of Pacific Ocean surface temperatures and can trigger widespread changes in weather around the world, including a higher-than-normal number of hurricanes in the Atlantic.October-November forecast calls for 4 named storms, 2 hurricanes and 1 major hurricane, the above-average prediction for October-November 2007 activity is largely due to the emergence of a now moderate La NiƱa event.
Sea Temp Anomalies April 2007
April 2007 was the third warmest April for the globe on record, and the first four months of 2007 were the warmest ever, according to statistics released this week by the National Climatic Data Center.

The Dutch Marines visit SXM....May 21-May 26 for Operation Hurex (Hurricane Exercise) This type of operation is carried out at the beginning of every hurricane season bringing together the Royal Dutch Marines, Police, Fire Department, Voluntary Corps of St. Maarten and several other agencies. If you are on SXM at this time do not be alarmed. Example: a scenario was fabricated , where a Marine, realistically swathed in ketchup, had apparently "lost his leg" in an automobile accident. The "victim" and his leg were transported to hospital ambulance personnel.
The Dutch Marines will allow media onboard the zuiderkruis
The defense of the Dutch islands is the responsibility of the Dutch armed forces, one frigate, at least two maritime patrol aircraft, and part of the third infantry battalion of the Marine Corps are permanently stationed in the Caribbean.
