Dear All volunteers and community minded environmentalists,

The Sint Maarten PRIDE foundation will be organising the International Coastal Cleanup on September 16,2006. This is a worldwide event and is held in over 88
countries. The location will be the Mullet Bay Beach from 7am-10am.

This event is open to all participants, children are welcome, students that have to complete community service hours and all other youth groups, scout groups and other interested community minded volunteers. The Sint Maarten PRIDE foundation will be needing volunteers to man the booths, persons who will stand and give the volunteers their ICC data cards, trash bags and gloves, these volunteers will also make sure that all bagged trash bags be weighed with the scales that will be available at the booth.

Also, this year we will be doing something extra, PRIDE foundation has signed up with the Oranje Fonds in the Netherlands to be part of the MEET & GREET day. We need volunteers who will stand and give information about the PRIDE foundation in the location that will have the Oranje Fonds decoration. For more information

The ICC is all about inventorising the trash that is found at the beach, we encourage participants to work in groups of 3-4, one participant will fill out the data card, while the others collect trash, and another holds the trash bag. When the trash bag is full, the bag should be weighed. All data cards are later on sent to the Ocean Conservancy in Washington D.C..

The data is then compiled by regions in the world and are available online at www.oceanconservancy.org and www.coastalcleanup.org. Environmental lobbyists can use the results to bring change to government policies and also to persuade large corporations to introduce enviro friendly products that will not harm the environment.

Tools will be provided by the foundation, rakes, gloves and trash bags will be handed out to the participants. Water will be provided by VOLVIC water courtesy of
Caribbean Liquors and Tobacco.

The International Coastal Cleanup organised by the SXM PRIDE foundation is sponsored by the SHTA, SXM LIONS CLUB and VOLVIC water. CLEAN SXM N.V.(Boykie Mendez and his team) is our constant supporter and will haul away the bagged trash to the landfill.

Remember it is a crime to litter and this event also highlights the problems of litterbugs leaving their trash behind at our beaches.
