The Trial of The Merx

Some time ago I tried my hand at a little Dr. Seuss poetry in a blog post here called The Return of the Merx. After much badgering and harrassment from my family and friends, not to mention Flipper and others on SXM PE, I herewith offer up the second chapter

(Again, with apologies to Dr. Seuss, author of “The Cat in the Hat”)

It was to sunny Sint Maarten the Merx did Return,
To work for the Gibson and manage The Firm
I'm hired to coach and give Social Face
And pass out these out these books all over the place.

His picture was here, his picture was there,
Smoozing and passing out books everywhere,
I've done nothing wrong he said on the air,
These rumors are false and just are not fair.

But some did persist and questions were asked,
An investigation started, The Merx came unmasked.
Flipper was the first to announce the detention,
On this newfangled and awesome webblog invention.

The Merx was locked up in a cell all alone.
For misusing his authority and tapping a phone,
For days he awaited the turn of the key,
Finally with conditions the Judge set him free.

Expressing remorse the Merx did appear,
Claiming that jealousy had made him lose gear,
He'd done some things wrong and abused office perks,
But at the end of the day, he was only a Merx.

The trial it was set for the 3rd day in June
For some it was late and for some it was soon,
No fear nor worry did the Merx have to feel,
As far as he knew, he'd made a good deal.

The Trial it got started, with Taco & Rip,
Each side waiting for the other to slip.
The Bloem did defend with energy and zeal,
To throw out the case, an acquittal to steal,

One year was the sentance, shocking the nation,
Suspended, along with a year of probation.
Banned from office for the coming five years,
What started with Love, has ended in Tears.

And although all his Dreams have faded away,
For some the Return of the Merx may happen some day.
For scheming and dealing runs rife in this land
The Gibson, The Merx and their interesting band.

Great poem.. but on a serious note!

This poem is really funny, My compliments.
On a more serious note. It is time we write something for those who visit here about the appotheosis of the Merky Merx saga.
Justice was done. Our former “Royal Highness” Cor Merx was dealt a really bad blow. A one year suspended jail sentence and a 5 year ban from office may seem to be a “get away” as the Herald reported. For Merx it is not. It has ended his career in the justice field. The Herald observed sharply however that Merx has done our society a big favor. He showed us the risks of justice being in the hands of the wrong people and by doing so he disqualified himself as the Chief Prosecutor for the country Sint Maarten. A job he wanted to have so badly. I wonder if anybody understood that hint. The Herald was right. Merx violated rules that ordinary men can’t violate. He tapped people’s phones for personal reasons. He falsely accused his ex-girlfriend and her relatives of being suspects in a criminal investigation so he could learn their exact itinerary while they were vacationing in the U.S. The worst form of abusing power. God only knows what else he did and what else he would have done if they had kept him in his position. It is indeed (in a way) a blessing that he did what he did so that the justice system, as we still know it, could deal with him.

Richard Gibson’s Today wrote in the editorial -biased as usual- that the Merx supporters were relieved that he didn’t have to spend time in jail. The editorial continued to suggest that society should now put the story to bed as life goes on. Gibson conveniently forgot to mention that there is also a large group in this society that does not like Merx. It would have been balanced to at least suggest that this group is probably equally relieved that he will not ever serve as an officer of the law again.

And what will happen with this Merx story? It will fade away but it will not be forgotten. Merx has become a part of our history; an example for our youth how not to be an officer of the law. He downgraded himself to the category of convicted criminals. He is our clown of justice. Society should treat him as such. We laugh at clowns but we don’t take them serious.

Faith in the justice system is not an automatism as the beating of the heart. Faith should be deserved. Showing society that justice is indeed blind is a good way of doing so. We can thank Merx for screwing up so bad that our justice system had the opportunity to show us exactly that. Nobody is above the law still.
