Crematorium discussion

My previous posting here said that the meeting was about the Belair/Cay Hill crematorium, mentioned in this article last Sat. (DH - 13th May), it was not, it was about the one planned in Suckergarden.

The meeting was quite interesting and I'll try to write more about it tomorrow. However for now let me say that one of the more important concerns raised was the government's ability in overseeing that it's operations are kept to the high standards the equipment representative My Paul Rayhill claimed it would have.

Now, I for one believe that a crematorium is desperately needed on the island, just look at the hill in the cemetary by Le Grand Marche and you will see a rising City of the Dead slowly creaping up it's slopes. Some people mentioned in the meeting that cremating is mainly for indian or minorities, whereas Caribbean people prefer to be buried.

Now, traditionally this may be the case, but then it must be considered that in those traditional times, the only way to get cremated was to build a big bonfire. It was a lot easier to dig a hole. I'm not sure how christian religions stand on this form of burial, my own father's service was held in a church but he was cremated, but it would seem to me that most consider the body just a shell, that when we die our souls leave it and either go to Heaven or Hell.

I think the savings for people by not having to buy expensive caskets and finding a burial plot will convince many of the benefits of cremation.

Anyway, more tomorrow if i can, or perhaps some others who were there would like to add to this posting with comments.

One last thing. If I recall correctly, Duane Meyers denied that there were plans to add a crematorium to the Emerald Funeral Home in Belair, yet the newpaper article says a permit request has been submitted. Whats the deal with that?

Some of you all might find this interesting. I haven't had time to read it all, it's the proceedings of a case in Connecticut of a funeral home seeking permits. There is interesting info in there I suspect.

Meyers funeral home vs. Meyers funeral home

M&M N.V. is the company seeking a to build a funeral home and crematorium in Sucker garden.
This is the Toochie meyers gang.

Heavenly song N.V. is the exsisting funeral home that is seeking to add a crematorium to the Emerald funeral home in Cay Hill.
This is the Frankie Meyers gang (Commissioner of Health and death)

Do we reallllly need 2 crematoriums on the island? while M&M says they have acquired land in Sucker Garden next to the Lions Club building where ASA operates, they also claim they will have parking facillities for the services that will be held there.
And we all know parking is very needed, especially seeing the large funeral services that are held in the last years. There is still a lot to debate about the environmental and health issues surrounding a crematorium in a populated area. Dwayne Meyers (M&M) said that he estimates that only 5 cremations will be held yearly, so the people are asking if the amount is that low, why bother with building an expensive crematorium?

Heavenly Song N.V. has not had a public hearing as yet, but residents are very worried that Emerald funeral Home already lacks parking facilites as the building has parkng for 4 vehicules.
When a funeral is held there, the cars are a danger to road users as cars are parked on the roundabout, on the side of the roads, over at the Learning Unlimited school, cars parked are a hamper to ambulances trying to get to the hospital.
The infastructure is not in place in this area for a crematorium, which needs parking facilities, this area will also become home soon to the fire department.
Ambulances, fire trucks need a wide enough road to manouver to get to the hospital, fire trucks need to speed off to fires, a road lined with parked cars will not help with the response times.

The main problem with any crematorium on the island regardless of neighborhood is the need to moniter the crematorium, make sure that the operators are doing things properly. And this is where all our problems lie on SXM, who will inspect it? This is our loved ones we are talking about, giving them their last resting place and everyone wants things to go smoothly.
Not to hear that the machine broke down, the body half burned and the operators are waiting for a part from the US etc.

Government inspectors should be trained to deal with crematoriums but then even so, the people are saying they have no confidence that the dept Inspectors will carry out their jobs as they are hardly doing so now, as we see with other depts, notably with large construction developments.
