Cupecoy Border Wall

In February last year, Roy Marlin was pressured by public opinion to order a halt to the destruction, by Orient Express Hotels, of what is most likely the historical border wall in Cupecoy. He extracted a "pledge" from OEH that the wall would be restored and the parts that were damaged would be saved.
I'm betting he didn't get it in writing!

For over a year OEH did nothing with the wall, nor did the government mention it. The pictures above appear to show that a road has been carved out, presumably one that leads towards La Samana and perhaps part of the wall's remains covered over. Did they save or remove any of the wall from this area to help restore the rest that they knocked down? Do they still plan to restore any of it? What about the lovely walkway shaded by trees?

Over on the other side, Cupecoy Village is still a little bit of a mystery, but there has been murmurs about a possible commercial shopping mall.

The layout does suggest individual plots, the ones inland are much smaller than the ones along the coast. Perhaps for future Rainbow's and Cliffs?

Cupecoy border wall covered over
Flipper | Sat, 2006-04-08 15:41

I passed by there today, unfortunately with no camera. The new road has probably covered over or destroyed about 300ft of wall. It is now buried under rubble and dirt.

Assholes!

Cupecoy Border point/road to be moved.

A drive through Cupecoy and into Lowlands will show you that the new road being built on top of and over the destroyed border wall is the new main road. The new road meets up with the current road just around the corner after turning the top of the hill.

In the picture used above in the blog you can see that the area to the right and below the present road has already been "scraped" bare and it would be reasonable to suspect that as soon as the new road is finished, the rest will be too, including the old road. There is also a large section of the wall to the right (lagoon side) of the current road. I wonder what will happen to this?

SXM Living Jess has a Blog Post up about Cupecoy with some new photos.

I believe that Morrisson are the architects for OEH. Perhaps one of us should inquire what will happen to the remaining section, several hundred meters long, on the lagoon side of the new road and just below the old. Perhaps this is the section the meant when they promised to restore and preserve it.

Remember the wall?

The Today has

Cupecoy road dispute - 28th July 2006

but they mistate that the project was halted, just the tearing down of the wall was stopped, about 17 months ago. They also forget that Roy Marlin and the developers came to an agreement to restore the wall. Uh huh!

Andre Patrick knows his stuff, the man is a wealth of knowledge and experience and it will be a great loss when he retires. If I am reading this correctly then Orient Express Hotels have built the new road without ensuring that the road exchange was certain. Perhaps Roy "permits are frivolous details" Marlin has made some deal here? Does he have the right to promise or negotiate away a public road for the benefit of a developer? Isn' t there a process involved here?

Lets hope for more on this soon.
