Lagoon Life (sic)
The SXM Pride and Ocean Care foundations this last week took a tour around the lagoon and forwarded a series of photos and observations to SXM PE. Prosecutor Paul Mooij also took a tour back in September last year and sadly, it seems not much has changed.

In Cole Bay it was noted that the water in many places is black, dark brown and even reddish in some areas, particularly along the area between Budget Marine and Island Water World. The water in the background of this first photo is almost black.

On the other side behind the FedEx building it looks like this.

The water around this old barge is surprisingly rust colored.

As Paul Mooij noted after his own tour, "The main reason we did the inspection is because we had already an alarming report about the quality of the water in the lagoon". Not only is raw sewerage going into the lagoon but also many other polutants. He pointed out that the shipyards did not look very clean and that many businesses were operating without hinderance permits.
Further investigation was promised.
It was also observed by the foundations that there seemed to be several boats that were being used as storage and many that, although unlikely to be considered seaworthy, have residents.

At Little Key, already a grave yard for two large wrecks, another boat has appeared, apparently from Dominica. Several dogs were seen on the island and items and equipment, including a generator, that implies that the two wrecks may have residents also.

Junk and garbage can be seen all over the lagoon.

And it used to look like this.

This is what the Foundations had to say:
Ocean Care and PRIDE foundation made the tour, as we believe that water testing has to be conducted and an inventory has to made of all businesses located around the Simpson bay Lagoon. There has to be a detailed report made of every business, like restaurants, apartment buildings, boatyards, marine stores, marinas, boat docks, dwellings and storage areas.
Once the list is compiled, an inspector should go out and inspect every one of them and see if they comply with all nesessery enviornmental laws. All boat yards and other boat repair places should have hindrance permits. The foundations even found small boats that are used as storage for garbage and other storage of items.
Little Key has now 3 boats anchored up and has at least 3 dogs roaming the island, it seems to protect the boats. 2 of these boats are wrecks and the new one is from Dominica, which looks like it is in good shape.
When will the Coast Guard go out with immigration to see who these people are and if they have residence permits to stay anchored up on Dutch side SXM. Little Key is owned by the island government and is not privately owned, anyone docked there should be in possesion of valid permits to reside.
Remember that whenever any of these anchored boats flush toilets, it goes right into the lagoon.
Development is clearly out of control, government does not have the ability to keep up with it and the departments responsible are demoralised, understaffed and underfunded. More people need to speak up, government won't do anything unless they do!
Roy ol Boy, you're doing a heckofa job!

I am astonished at what I see happening in the Lagoon, unbelievable and Sad! It is indeed strange and regretful that Commissioner Louie E. Laviest is not saying one word about this situation while the Lagoon is literally part of his back yard.
We are really progressing well!

Anyone feel ill??
The pictures posted above taken at the Simpson Bay Lagoon are sick indeed.
These pictures show that our government will have to start dealing with monitering the lagoon on a regular basis.
Keep up the good work on this very informative site!
On saturday in the daily herald newspaper there is a response from robbie ferron regarding the pictures posted above.
Is Mr. Ferron saying that these pictures are an exageration of pollution?
Does Budget Marine, a company owned by robbie ferron offer anti-fouling paint with copper for sale?
I wonder if Ferron has beef with the pictures because he sells these type paints and he is partly guilty for the enviornmental pollution in the Simpson Bay Lagoon.
The pictures show some type of paint pollution, could be anti-fouling, could be any other type of paint with an oily film.
Or he could be waffling on about anti fouling paint in order to distract from it. The point is Robbie, the lagoon is fucked environmentaly. He is quite right in one argument, there is no need to have highly qualified inspectors to know this fact, you can see and smell it for yourself.
Robbie mentions that for him, the environmental future of the lagoon is a very important subject. Of course, all of us know that his business is centered upon the marine trade and this is hardly an unbiased point of view.
Antifouling paint may well have very little to do with the discoloration of the water, in which case he should have no concerns about tests being done by highly qualified inspectors. With his high interest in the environmental future of the lagoon he should be welcoming them.
Simpson Bay Lagoon highly poluted say enviro groups - 22nd February 2006
Letter - Robbie Ferron - Lagoon polution report is inaccurate - 25th February 2006
Some more photos were received today showing the quality of the water.
In the 70's you could see the bottom of the lagoon in the center of the cole bay area, about 6-8 ft deep, now you can hardly see 6-8 inches. There were lobsters, snappers and many shoals of mullet and baby pufferfish, now what is there?
The lagoon and the state it is in is a shameful disgrace and clear sign that our commissioner of the environment is incompetant and inept with that portfolio, as he is with others. Problem is, those of us who remember how it used to be and can see the degradation around the island are getting fewer, whilst those who are used to it and knowing no different are growing.
The lagoon needs a task force of inspectors and studies/tests and those like Robbie who would stand in the way of this should be pushed aside and treated with the distain they deserve. Sorry Robbie, but to me your point of view in regards to inspectors is like what the lagoon is full of.

Seems that Ferron spending so much time selling his wares to the many that use and abuse the lagoon has him afflicted with the same shit they put in the lagoon everyday. I am wondering who made Ferron the King of the Lagoon, why is it that every letter and comment about the lagoon and it's traffic he has to comment on as if it is his little terrain?
Remember the back and forth letters between him and Dwight Barran?
He is always trying to discredit everyone who has a different opinion, yet Dwight lives also close to the lagoon and sees for himself the atrocities going on everyday. Mr. Ferron it seems is the king of the Simpson Bay lagoon, so then he should know exactly where all the pollution is coming from.
Oh I forgot it is always land based pollution he says, never the boats, the boaties, the yachties, the Budget Marines that sell paints that are banned in many and most countries. And our stupid politicians have been listening to people like him for way to long, if a local says anything, we are considered stupid and small time, if a Ferron says anything it is "oh he is a marine expert"
Advice to Ferron: sometimes it is wise to just keep your mouth shut!
Those recent photos of the Simpson Bay Lagoon are sickening to say the least. I cannot believe that I actually swam in it.Tourists beware! Janelle
Budget sells tin based paints that are banned in the US.
I suppose he will argue that in the NA there are no laws as yet and if he didn't sell them too the Island Water World would get the business. Lame excuse of course, coming from someone who cares about the Lagoon so much.
Now, does anyone know if IWW sells these paints too?
Not only that, but according to this SXM Pride and Ocean Care letter on anti fouling paints sent to the media today, even the copper ones Robbie claims are ok, are banned in some European countries.

The foundations bring up the very important fact that at present there are absolutely NO facilites on the island or at the dump in town, to process used toxic chemicals, paints or even batteries. Again, we come back to governmental failure to put those facilites in place. All those chemicals that have been dumped in the Salt Pond will be coming back to haunt our children.

Does anyone have a camera with a polarizing filter? In some cases it could make a much more effective picture. In others, it will show that the red is the camera reacting to the blue reflection from the sky.
I have taken some pics with a polarizing filter which clearly show "streams" of polution. (sadly I dont have them with me) It would help to show where the sewage is coming from if you could take them from above the lagoon.
