Columbia Suxsit presents: "A Series of Unfortunate Events"

RBTT hasn't been the only one providing the laughs these past couple of weeks, Richard Gibson gave us all a little giggle when he announced he'd be happy to serve again if asked, a subject that deserves it's own blog post and may just get one. For now, lets have a look at the Series of Unfortunate Events occuring over Dawn Beach way.

____________________________________________________________

The Blog Post you are are about to read is extremely unpleasant, this story does not have a happy beginning, nor a happy ending, there are really no happy bits in the middle either. This is because not many happy things happen with the three unpleasant developments currently ongoing on along the East Coast.

To tell the story we must first go back a little to early last year in April when it was announced that the Dawn Beach property had been sold and that a grand new brand name development was coming to the island. Our "Commish of the Environment" (sic) Roy Marlin, proudly declared he was determined that the project “becomes a success story in terms of the protection of the environment, the beach, public access to the beach, public parking, etcetera,”

The etcetera at the end tells a great deal about the statement and it's sincerity and the rest of the article is rather interesting too. He asked “all concerned parties to give government the opportunity to finalise the details with the developer.” Yes, the man is serious and ruthless, he wants to first make the deals and sign permits before addressing citizens or environmental concerns. Not that it really matters anyway, he believes "permits are fivolous details".

The modus operandi that Roy uses is generally, "don't get emotional", "trust us" or "It's individuals with hidden agenda's", occasionally he even adds insinuated and subtle threats.

Anyway, moving on with this unhappy story, the result was that the pond and mangroves got dug up and the pond drained into the sea, along with the sludge.

This was of course done without the proper permits and whilst there were outstanding objections and questions about the project. The project has the support of Roy, who just happens to be renting out a house he recently aquired in Dawn Beach to the developers. The police and prosecutor Mooij did launch an investigation, about the polution, not the house, and as of now I do not know what the outcome was. Anyone?

Suxsit again showed it's consideration for the environment later in September.

Now we must jump forwards with the story and to the most recent "Unfortunate Events" of the past couple of weeks, which started with this story about Red Pond. The Herald mistakingly stated that the project was for the Marriot and it prompted this article from Suxsit.

Isn't it ironic that this should happen?

Jump another week forwards and we have the SVB conducting a raid on both Suxsit and the neighboring Duck construction sites, Duck being the third of the Big Three developers along the East Coast, currently trying to remove Ms B from the beach in front.

Construction workers run from SVB inspections - 9th February 2006

(UPDATE - 120 uninsured in SVB control - 11th February 2006)

Need I continue?

Well, ok, just a little more.......

It would now appear that the Coral Beach Club being developed by Duck will also be a Westin Resort,, remarkably the images shown on their site are nearly all on the Suxsit side of the beach. I guess Ms B is in the way huh?

Suxsit meanwhile continues to be confused about where in the Caribbean they actually are. I feel certain they would not have been able to do what they have done in the Virgin Islands.

"You're doing a heckofa job Marlin!"

I watched the digging up of all the palm trees on the Dawn Beach Westin site, then saw them being replanted on the Coral Beach Club property and wondered back then if these two construction sites were one in the same...Westin!

unfortunate events desrves a movie contract for sure

I just love the unfortunate events blog, this story deserves a movie contract.
I hope that the people that are buying these condos have a concious of what they are buying into.
They are buying condos from developers that destroyed the environment for them to get their rich asses a caribbean retreat.
The developers live as if they own the island and the government officials, and they do own Roy Marlin for sure.
I am hoping that Ms. B's just gets ahead with her court case and sees that these type of people get the nasty credit they deserve.
How else can you explain that Ms.B's gets a permit to operate a beach bar and grill at the beach from government, then Mr. Cromwell and his ugly american friends buys the property adjencent to Mr. Busby's and tell Ms. Beach she is blocking his view?
He claims his deed says he owns beach and water, now back in the day, these type of measurements were not done with proper equipment, all beaches on SXM are public. what does he do? he fills up his property with condos, there is hardely any access to the beach, there is no parking not even for the people buying condos from him, coral shore.
Tourists buying these type of condos should be made aware from who they are buying, these type of people on SXM are pirates! they are not here to contribute to the economy, to help the society, you never see then giving from their hearts to the enviro groups, planting trees where needed, helping the children in Christal home or the Debbie Gibbes fostor home, these people like Cromwell and Columbia Suxsit are the ones that cause rifts in the community giving all americans a bad name.
It is arrogant people like these that made Fidel Castro organise his revolution to rid Cuba of the ugly americans.
The only entiites that these developers give to is to the political so-called commissioners, who gets a house out of this environmental destruction.
By the way, you forgot to mention in your unfortunate events that Roy Marlin claimed that the pond at Dawn beach was man made.
There are maps at the Kadaster office showing that the pond always exsisted.
These maps are from the 1700's and 1800's.
The opposition on SXM has to get bolder with their campaign, the poster for ROY should have one word on it "LIAR" "LIAR"

Who are the jobs for?
Hady Nufyet | Mon, 2006-03-20 23:34

The Exco recently expressed it's wish to Columbia Suxsit that 70-80% of the workforce be local.

Does "local" mean those who already have working permits, or those that are citizens?

It will be interesting to see how many eventually are actually "local", as it would also be with many other resorts and big developments on the island. But who's checking?

Hey Louis!! Line up those people from your job fairs for training and employment.

Unfortunate Events continue for Suxsit

First there's the interesting case of the project manger being fired.

Fired Suxsit project manager goes to labor office - 30th March 2006

Then there is the very interesting and worrying report in the newspaper today about possible unauthorised dynamite use.

Dawn Beach residents tell of dynamite blast - 5th April 2006

This last story, if true, is a very serious matter and we are going to see if the authorites take it up and investigate the matter. The fire department and the police should have demanded immediate access to the site and taken samples and photos. All work on the area should have been halted.

Anyone over that way know if the dump trucks and exacavtors have been working extra hard the last day or so?

New Dawn Beach photos

Jess over at SXM Living Blog has posted a bunch of new Dawn Beach photos. Check them out here.

Has anyone noticed the ad for Westin posted on the billboard by the Great Bay Auditorium? It has the slogan "Imagine a beach to call your very own".

Before Suxsit started the project, many local residents and visitors used Dawn Beach, in particular on Sundays. There would often be over 30 or 40 cars parked in the lot. I do not know the amount of spaces Suxsit claim to be providing for public parking but I think we can safely bet it won't be more than 15 or so, which will most likely be filled by whatever rental company operates there. A resort of 300 odd rooms and 200 condos is going to need parking for at least 300-400 cars.

The slogan highlights the likely desires of Suxsit/Westin to limit the amount of local residents that use the beach in order to offer their guests more exclusivity.

If they used explosives without any authorisation then they should have the book thrown at them.

Explosives again in Dawn Beach
Anonymous (not verified) | Sun, 2006-05-14 11:17

Saturday, May 13th, 6pm and the Suxsit boys were blowing up the hillside again. The smell of Gun powder was in the air, rocks were flying and deep reverberating booms shook the ground and surrounding buildings.

There is nothing one can do and nothing one can say. Who you gonna call? Who is going to throw that book? These boys have been using explosives since the day they started blowing up the hillside to make a little more land to fit their monstrosity on it.

They claim it is CO2. Everyone believes them. The fire department couldn't actually be bothered to do tests. These boys have received governement sanction to do what they please since the day they purchased the land. It is incredible that the government of St. Maarten cares so little about their island.
