Separate Church and State!
It's been a while since I felt like blogging, Flipper's email asking me to write something for the site a couple days ago was on my mind but honestly, I'm just too fed up with it all. But then, today reading the Daily Herald's (nice new site by the way DH!) story about Frans and George saying they don't think SXM should have separation of Church and State I no longer had any choice.
I've covered religion and SXM's religious nuts a few times over the years, one my first blogs here was titled Gay Gay Gay Gay Gay, I was sick and tired of reading religious clap trap and homophobic hate speech in our papers, and about 3 weeks later the two CBS gay guys got whacked over the head with a tire iron in Maho. Links to some of my other blogs can be found on one I wrote last year titled 'State and Church Separation?'
Before I get stuck in to this lovely meaty morsel laid before me, let me just state as I have done in the past that it is not my intention to offend those with religious beliefs. However, I reserve the right to have and hold to my own non religious beliefs and that means it's probably impossible not to offend those with them when speaking my mind. You have been warned.
Now, what's all this I hear about government building a church with money taken out of the tourism funds? Not only that, but Frans and George apparently proclaimed that they believe there should be no separation between Church and State in the New Country St. Maarten.
First, about the Church and taxpayer money. There is something that is just so fundamentally wrong about this that it is difficult to narrow it down or express it's wrongness. As the Daily Herald Editorial rightly calls it, "an unprecedented direct involvement of government not just in religion as a whole, but with one specific church group."
Government has absolutely NO business funding individual religious groups at all, nor to use tax payer funds to build a church. As a tax payer I'd have to ask "How dare they! 500,000nafs from the Tourism budget??!?"
Notice too that the DH reports that it was apparently Sarah that obtained the land for the church, so that's a few families on the housing list to wait a little longer I guess. How many parishioners, ie voters, does this church have I wonder?
Secondly, both Frans and George have shown themselves to be either ignorant and naive about what Separation is and why it exists, or that they have some pretty screwed up thinking going on inside their heads. Either way, not the sort I myself would want running a country and making it's laws. Nor do I want the homophobic bigots in SMUMF and the churches to have influence on making those laws either, thank you very much. It's a dangerous path towards theocracy. It's not a matter of whether Christians are a majority, the island has enough diversity to be considered secular. I think most people out there would choose the latter if the choice was explained to them.
Government has no business being so close to religion and religion has no business meddling in government.
Anyway, I've run out of time and there was so much more I wanted to say about this too. Nevermind, I'm sure if PE still has readers this blog may get some reactions. Please share your thoughts about it all.

I am sorry to have to say this but, remember me? I am the one who, maybe at times too harshly, kept preaching: Be careful what you wish for .... you might just get it. And trust me when I say, this is just the beginning. This is not the DP Government who one could ridicule or just push around when they wanted to. We wanted "STRONG" leaders, well .... looks like we got them.
While I will agree that we needed a change, we definitely had NO ONE out there to replace the then DP Govt. At times we, as human beings, have to be patient and wait for the right moment to make positive changes. As I said before, this is just the tip of the Iceberg, it will get a lot worse and we will have to just shut up and deal with it since there is no "positive" alternative, at this time. It is still either William, Sarah, Theo or the Dutch. (You take your pick).
I am a believer in "GOD", not a believer in "A" specific religious club. I am totally against this approach by the Government for oh so many reasons and I will be back from time to time. But I just could not resist to check in and say my say at this point. I do intend to sit back and just brace myself for whatever comes next, since I tried to knock some sense into those who were blinded by hate and revenge. But hey, I am just a little, insignificant person, a minority in my own country. I refuse to NOW "rise up" and jeopardize my well being. I could say whatever I wanted about the previous Govt. without feeling oppressed, now things have changed. Yes, my lips are sealed ;S
Many wanted change, well, change is here.
A.M. "A Minority" (in my own country)
First of all, let's realize who made these ridiculous statements: yes, Frans and Hyacinth. The latter does not know how to read speeches (he actually reads aloud the words -pause for applause- during press conferences). Frans has problems with basic English grammer and demonstrates this daily.
So it's not that far to phantom that these 2 jokers don't even know what the consequences are of a theocracy. I think Frans wants the issue to go away fast because it smells like rotten fish (an NA icon, Edgar Lynch, pocketing big bucks), so Frans is trying to rally the support of the (Methodist) church going residents.
Really, I think each week we get a better insight into the utter ignorance and arrogance of these commissioners. Almost makes me long for the days of Sarah. Nah, maybe not.
Is the NA government better than the DP government? No. Is vice versa better? No, same shit different characters.
WE NEED A NEW PARTY PEOPLE, AND IT AIN'T LIME GREEN EITHER!
Now we know clearly the faults and reasons why NOT to vote for the DP or NA, so perhaps a new party, not Lime Green, will have a chance. It wouldn't be difficult to offer something fresh and inspiring considering what we get from these two.
I said before that the influence of religion on government members and their decisions is an important and quite valid to question. I am interested in knowing where any politician seeking my vote stands on Evolution, it's important to me and tells me a great deal about them.
I think they should be asked, sadly no one in a media thinks so.

Church and State need to be kept separate.
Everything the SHTA has mentioned comes from The herald. LOL Flipper you just refuse to give the paper credit. They broke the story, they've been all over it from day one EVEN after Frans try to brush it away they dug deeper. The questions about capital invetsments, the process, the money coming from the tourism budget, the no permits, everything comes from Herald. They've ben asking the questions and we would have never known had they not dug deeper. AND as a result rumors have it that the NA basically have a hit squad out on the reporter who has been on this story like white on rice! Plus why did the SHTA not make mention that 500,000 guilders coming from the tourism budget! William Marlin confirmed it after Herald bust that pot. I guess the SHTA wanted to look like they care about more than just tourism marketing. Thats their right. But how much you wanna bet Herald reminds people of the toruism budget angle tomorrow. It's good journalism and they have been practicing it. Lastly, the SHTA wrote a line that sums up with we've been seeing in our news reports ALOT lately and it shows you that despite this, herald STILL manages to break this major story and the others have followed. The SHTA states: "The SHTA tried contacting Commissioner Frans Richardson and Lt. Governor Richards to get some insight into this decision, but they were both unavailable." And there you go.
A friend
You are right, the DH is apparently on the case by following and writing about the story in the first place. In fact most of the media outlets have their scoops and the DH isn't all bad, but I do think criticism has and does help push them (all media) to do a better job, particularly in the issue of investigative reporting.
I think the fact we now have 5 or 6 sources for news rather than just 2 (the daily papers) has helped to spur competition too.
It is curious how the SHTA said nothing about the money coming from the tourism funds too, odd.
Flipper
Flip, the SHTA did not want to be labelled as only caring about the Tourism budget and not the island (affairs) in general, because that would be the response they would have received (as they are already perceived by many to be an elite club). They tried to approach this matter from a broader perspective.
Thanks for sharing that perspective, it makes sense to me :)
Today I was going back over some news stories that hadn't been posted into our news library and found out that the DH had in fact been on this story for quite some time. I honestly didn't know as I had missed some papers and hadn't been able to check the website much over that time. Not only that, but I have been unable to find anything on this story on SMMN or Island Times, they have hardly touched the story at all.
So yes, big kudos to the DH reporter/s on this case and to the DH itself for a 21st century website at last. Below are a bunch of the stories I found, plus a few choice letters confirming that thinking people do exist in SXM and are willing to speak up now and then.

Yes, kudos to the herald for breaking this story. However, if they did not get the scoop handed to them on a silver platter, it would've never surfaced.
So tipsters, please keep the dirt coming please!!
