SMNN - Philipsburg: --- Information reaching SMN News states that the leader of the People's Progressive Party Gracita Arrindell and Commissioner Theo Heyliger are to sign an agreement as early as Tuesday declaring that they have begun talks to form the new green party.
SMN News learnt that Heyliger and Arrindell had agreed prior to the parliamentary elections that they were going to team up for country election which is slated for June 2010.[More....]
Then she will have lost me for good. How could she consider teaming up with this man? All credibility and integrity that she appears to have when it comes to good governance and doing whats right for the island will be out the window.
Don't do it Gracita, really, don't.
Flipper
LOL, I wonder how 'green' their policies will be...
island politics, it's such a carnival show.
If only these people weren't the same people that make all the most important decisions =/ if only they'd stay true to their calling and remain clowns 4ever!
I heard Franky will joining the Green Revolution as well, is it true?
Hey, how creative will this years' votebuying ritual be? Can we give them some tips? it could definitely be a bit less obvious... don't we all agree on that?
There so many other young enthusiastic people on all these lists who we can mark our vote for. Why are we constantly looking at the Theo and Gracita and Marlin. There are choices. If we know or believe Theo is corrupt, then vote him out.
His ambitious move to atleast talk to Gracita is good political move on his part, whether we care for his politics or not. He needs someone with a constitutial background to move the process ahead. Gracita can, with the help of advisors in the field, handle all the constitutional rangling that needs to be ironed out.
The process of "Dualism" which all island council, EXCo and Sector directors where recently invited to is a step in informing those elected of their do's and do nots, although Theo was absent. I guess it didn't apply to his nature of governing. We need to hold our elected officials and top civil servants accortable. St.Maarten has come a long way since the days when people had to read an opposing opinion in a lonely alley. You didn't want to be seen reading the clarion or Newsday.
I believe that if and when the "Good Govenance"initiative comes into play, the society will be better served.
Good Governance ( according to the Lt governor)
Good governance has 8 major characteristics. It is participatory, consensus oriented, accountable, transparent, responsive, effective and efficient, equitable and inclusive and follows the rule of law. It assures that corruption is minimized, the views of minorities are taken into account and that the voices of the most vulnerable in society are heard in decision-making. It is also responsive to the present and future needs of society.
There’s also ‘Bad Governance’. An elucidation thereof can be found in the Court ruling of commissioner Laveist of April 28, 2009. In that ruling judge, Mr. H.A.C. Smid, stated: “Corruption (Bad Governance) damages everybody whose life, upkeep and happiness depends on the integrity of people holding positions of power”. The ruling further states “Corruption by officials can destroy a country or other governing entities”.( gov website)
Yes there some that will embrace Theo because they could physically see his actions, by building ring roads and beautifying St.Maarten. In recent days his actions on the current ROB saga lack in leadership. There are others who will never vote for him, because they believe he does not much for the common good. Gracita has to make a decision, and she may loose a lot these independent votes, if I may label them as such. At the end of the day a politician wants to be in power. So mix some orange and green and wish for the best.
TO most probably put this news story to feel out what the people think.
He knew Bibi would carry it and he just waits to read the comments below the story.
First of all Gracita is a terrible politician, she is not in tune with the people, she might have some clue about Constitutional Reform but as for the other portfolios she is not out there with the people.
TO wants to stay in power at all costs, he would team up with his dire enemy just to stay alive politically.
I do believe that TO and his family would like nothing better than for him to go back to the DP-but they all want him to lead.
The big question is; how can they get rid of Sarah as leader of the party? and now their dilemma is even greater as Sarah received the most personal votes.
I have not seen here a reason why the two cannot team up for Country. Gracita is a progressive politician, Theo is a working politician. Please state your case why Gracita should not join Theo.
Please allow me to give you my thoughts:
If Gracita joins Theo's new slime green party, Gracita would lose the last bit of credibility she still has, after she unilaterally decided to boycott the quest for country status and thereby completely ignoring the wishes of HER elecorate and without consultation.
When she was an island council member, she always preached transparency & accountability in government administration, which garnered broad support. However, these 2 pillars for good governance are in fact subjects that Theo never (or almost never) practices in any project that comes from his desk.
So for these 2 politicians, originating from complete opposite ends of the political spectrum and having great differences in their modus operandi, to team up "4 Country St. Maarten" can only be labeled as political opportunism at its best. Case closed.
Don't do it Gracita, please.
Well, that's easy in my opinion. In short: Gracita promotes an open, transparant and accountable government. Theo has chosen to deal behind curtains with companies he choose, he is ignoring what is happening in the ROB department and is only interested in projects that benefit his personal interests (especially: harbor).
