Caribdude's World Wide Web - 6th July 2009

I should write these WWW blogs more often because my bookmarks list just gets so darn long, full of stories, articles, links and videos that I plan to share with the readers here. I dunno about you all, but I'm an avid reader since I was a kid and I tend to get lost in the WWW when I have the time, sometimes even when I don't! lol

Anyway, below you'll find links to some stuff I saved over the past few months that some of you may like or find interesting and worth a browse with your morning coffee. :)

One of the constantly bewildering aspects of living on planet Earth is the assumption that most human beings seem to make that faith (usually, but not necessarily, the religious variety) is a virtue. This bizarre attitude — just to add insult to injury — often comes coupled with the equally strange idea that somehow too much reason is bad for you. Why?

White evangelical Protestants were the religious group most likely to say torture is often or sometimes justified -- more than six in 10 supported it. People unaffiliated with any religious organization were least likely to back it. Only four in 10 of them did. - Survey: Support for terror suspect torture differs among the faithful.

I…I think it's finally over. Our reactionary emotional response seems to have stopped it dead in its tracks. If I'm right, all we have to do now is smugly reiterate our half-formed thesis and—oh, no! For the love of God, no! It's thoughtfully mulling things over! Run! Run! It's making reasonable, fact-based arguments! - Oh, No! It's Making Well-Reasoned Arguments Backed With Facts! Run!

With a sea of information coming at us from all directions, how do we sift out the misinformation and bogus claims, and get to the truth? Michael Shermer of Skeptic Magazine lays out a "Baloney Detection Kit," ten questions we should ask when encountering a claim.

Dough, wonga, greenbacks, cash. Just words, you might say, but they carry an eerie psychological force. Chew them over for a few moments, and you will become a different person. Simply thinking about words associated with money seems to makes us more self-reliant and less inclined to help others. And it gets weirder: just handling cash can take the sting out of social rejection and even diminish physical pain. - Why money messes with your mind.

And finally, a link I think many will like, especially those who don't have tv, like me :)

Series Yonkis

Although the site is in Spanish, much of the video content has English versions too, usually the most recent. Take a browse down the listings and you will see many shows and series that you will recognize. My own favorites recently have been Californication and the most recent series of Family Guy, (only last series in English).

It's not a perfect site, sometimes you see something you want to watch and find there is no English version, or episodes sometimes don't work or get removed (presumably for copyright?). Sometimes you jest need to check back again in the future as these often get replaced and reposted.

(Help note - Click the episode you want to watch, and you will get something like this. The 3rd one is the one you will want, click where it says SELECCIONAR ESTA and just below section will show Ir a Megavideo para ver ONLINE en pantalla completa in orange. Click that and a new window will open. You will likely get a pop up ad window the first time you click to play, watch out for it.)

And that wraps it up, now to start that Climate Change Roundup post I promised LH. I am now back from Spain and happy to be home, just wish it didn't have such terrible traffic and frequent power cuts, lol.

Hope some of you enjoy the links :)
