Beware The Green Fraudsters

George MacGee's comment about Green Carjackers has given me an excellent excuse to browse back through SXM PE archives and blogs. You all should do it sometime, so many interesting things we forgot about, the laughs and tears, the scandals and memories...

George is right, there are Green Carjackers out there, unfortunately for them, we now have records and files and we know who they are.

____________________________________________________________

The difference now is that SXM PE exists and has a 3 1/2 year library of news and stories, in particular on environmental issues. Geroge is right that politicians are going to slowly start turning green, Theo started back in January 2007 followed by Roy in February, he can be also be heard in Caribdude's SXM Policy photovideo telling us there are no energy policies. Roy was asked a question by a reporter who quite probably saw our previous Climate Change video, St. Maarten - Past, Present and Future and read the info posted on it. Apparently Roy did tell the reporter to not ask him such stupid questions in the future, but that is only a rumor.

We here have exposed what we consider fraudulent and untrue claims of being green frequently, in particular with developers. For example, there is Red Pond where an agreement was made with environmental groups, who then found themselves banned from the property when they raised questions and concerns.

I myself wrote about the Green PR Machine back in July last year, which was followed up by Local Hero with Green BS Machine. And let's not forget Dawn Beach Westin, Roy's success story.

Sometimes I find you can be pessimistic and gloomy George. I have no doubt the regular writers here will be happy to pull up articles and news of candidates in the next elections and remind voters of their records. Importantly I think, is that voters are also reminded that it means nothing what individual politicians like Lou Lou say, because he is a member of a party with an abysmal and (imho) criminal environmental record.

The real problem we have is that there doesn't seem to be anyone who will get up on that political stage with genuine Green credentials who we can support. The NA record as an opposition party, that even screwed up it's chance to get into office through the petty TelEm/Sky is the Limit Saga, is also pathetic and nonexistant when it comes to the environment. We can expose the fraudsters, but who do we vote for instead?

The great green swindle
Anonymous (not verified) | Mon, 2008-10-27 14:07

As consumers become more eco-conscious, companies will go to ever greater lengths to present themselves as environmentally friendly. Some make exaggerated or absurd claims, others resort to downright lies. Fred Pearce, whose new weekly Greenwash column launches on the Guardian website today, reports on a sinister trend - and appeals to readers to help stamp it out

Positioning The Plastic Bag Man
George MacGee | Sun, 2008-09-28 13:05

Not being pessimistic and gloomy, but the McCain campaign tactics is a grim reminder of the short term memory of people. McCain is constantly re-inventing himself in light of the fact that he does not have a clear identity of who he is and what he stands for and can do this with impunity because of the fact that people tend to forget things that happened six months ago.

His present election campaigning is now even operating on the premise that people are even forgetting what was said or done six weeks ago. and from the flipflopping McCain has done this past week in regards to his position on the Wall Street crisis, he is now even assuming people has already forgotten what he said six days ago.

Here is where the PR spin doctors of our local politicians come in and are actively taking lessons from the McCain campaign tactics based on the Nixon doctrine: Lie, lie, lie and lie convincingly and people will believe what you say to be the truth.

I had to shake my head when I read that Loulou said that not even the environmental groups spoke up loud enough to stop people from using plastic bags or stopping the supermarkets from providing plastic bags to their clientele. A Nixon/McCain tactic if I ever saw one.

So you know what I see happening?

At the crucial moment, Commissioner Louie Laveist will pass legislature banning the use of plastic bags and ofcourse Jadira Veen and Barbara Cannegieter will be happy for that, but they will have to grit their teeth while smiling as they look on and see Loulou become the green hero of the day and coast clear to another election victory as The Plastic Bag Man.

My advice: debunk that comedian with a public awareness campaign before he makes a joke out of all the environmental groups and what they stand for. Remember, voters have short term memories and will only remember what the last guy shouted the loudest.

I am The Plastic Bag Man, who can forget that?
Shameless self-promotion as I have never seen it before.
You got to hand it to the man. He knows his "Positioning".
Shameless self-promoter marketeers around the world would be proud.

The title of this post actually should read:
The Shameless Plastic Bag Man

and shameless lagoon man

While it is true that Louie Laveist was many years ago an activist for the lagoon, Once he got into politics he did nothing anymore to protect the lagoon.
The Simpson Bay lagoon is worse off today then many years ago when he was shouting.
The illegal filling and buildings being built on the Lagoon's water edge happened under his watch.
Just a few months ago, a building was built smack on the edge of the lagoon behind one of the newer banks located on the street side.
People thought that the back of the bank was reserved for clientiele parking, nope, another building sprung up and parking again is extremely limited.
This building was built and/or owned by Ivan Havertong, partner with Claudius Buncamper (SBS) Ok, I feel a another rush of posts coming now from sxmlocalboy.
The fact of the matter is that our local village idiot has been in government for more than 8 years and the Simpson Bay lagoon is worse off today than it was 8 years ago.
The problem is not that our people forget, the ones here long enough knows that Lou Lou has an ETAO diploma in typing, he later worked in a lowly position in the Culture Department.
The problem is really that SXM has a transient population, people here for 4 years, 2 years, people leave to Holland and the US, then come back etc, even the reporters, not one goes back to the nineties. Some here for 6 months, some for 2 years.
So of course THEY don't know, except Fabian Badejo.
How he can write something like Loui's article and still feel good about himself is beyond me.
Of course everything on SXM has to do with 'what you can do for me" Could it be that Badejo's company gets work around election time?

Just to remind everyone, especially those with those short memories.
SXM PRIDE has been speaking, lecturing and handing our free eco-bags to the youth for a while now. The pictures are from last year and the school is Ruby Labega School in Retreat.
PRIDE has given out to many schools and have made many students aware of the dangers of plastic bags, and will continue doing so.

Westin

From www.smn-news.com

Great Bay:---- Atherthon Martin, Regional Environmentalist wants to know which idiot could have given the necessary permits or even saying yes to the construction of Westin Resort in Dawn Beach. “There is so much that can be done on this beautiful island but when you go by the Westin one has to wonder how did this happen, who said yes and why they did; and what are the results” Martin said that when looking at Westin he came to the conclusion that the project came from some type of science fiction book since it simply does not fit its location. He asked who is responsible for this madness and how they can be held responsible for their actions. Hopefully this project or acres of concrete will be used as an experience to teach people not to make the same mistake in the future.

Martin who is on St. Maarten creating awareness on climate change on this World Tourism Day celebrated today. Martin addressed key stakeholders at a forum at the Great Bay Beach Resort which was attended by Commissioner Roy Marlin former Public Works commissioner and commissioner of Economic Affairs Maria Buncamper Molanus.

In his opening address Martin described the future of St. Maarten as bright since the island’s children are bright. Even though some of these children are intimated they are like everyone else who needs to be heard, and given the necessary space. He said they understand the issues that world leaders are wrestling with the last few years. Martin said that the youths are crying out to be in partnership with leaders and taken seriously. He said that if the leaders can establish the common ground that exists with the youths and adults then everyone would be able to sleep in peace at nights.

Martin said many people are not experts and they should not pretend to be however, they should all be like the young people who are curious, and willing to learn and share.

Progress means getting nearer to the place one wants to be and sometimes going backwards is going forward are only some of the quotes Martin used to get this message across.

The Regional Environmentalist used a power point to establish the need to communicate and what are some of basic steps that have to be followed to safeguard the environment in developing the economy. He said that Tourism has been the wheel of the economy of the islands but wondered if the necessary research were conducted.

He asked if policy makers and those responsible for development stay in touch with the scientist, engineers and technicians prior to making crucial decisions. He said he would constantly empathize with policy makers who perpetuates that they hold lots of power when in fact they are powerless. “Because of this several scientists have abandoned their professions to become politicians with their attitudes by telling the policy makers what they what to hear instead of what they needs to hear to protect their countries.

He reminded that if whatever one does compromises the health and wellbeing of any society then it can be considered a failure and they have seriously messed up.

Impressive is how Martin defined the Lord’s Prayer in development which he said is used at every meeting in his homeland and wondered if people here don’t pray before they start meetings.

He said development through corruption does not mean a community or country is advancing. He said that planners have to use the basic fundamental principles of life in development. Consideration should be placed on who stands to benefit in developments and if the development is a detriment or profitable to the inhabitants of any place.

He asked if those in the tourism industry are looking at the consequences of continuing to market the island abroad and if they are sure these islands are offering the same things that the travelers were looking for a few years ago. He suggested the island using its natural resources to develop a safer and more stable economy. Making sure other sectors are also involved for the greater benefit of the people especially the poor. He described poverty as hell and no one should want to send their people to hell.

He alluded that it is people who messed up the Climate Change since they knew better and that science was available for their guidance but it was not properly utilized. Which has caused the islands to be in the frontlines today; he said that scientist today can better outline the speed of the climate change which is a global activity.

People today are experiencing the daily effects of the climate change since they are hot days and heavy rain another day, flooding and other side effects that are effecting the daily lives of everyone. Martin said that people have exceeded their capacity to consume but yet they are still consuming to maintain the economy which they said is the driving force. “If the economy is our death would you want to drive it” He asked if the people here are willing to commit global suicide which is what this climate change boils down to. Instead people should do the right things to make sure they do not contribute to this global suicide.

Finally Martin advice that leaders and managers be trained and or retrained. Leaders he said must go through training programs because he knows what result can come out of people without education and experience in positions. He also advised that square pegs should not be place in round holes. This is what we teach children in schools yet adults wants to force things to meet their needs thinking they are fooling the youths.

ask the people who have jobs
Anonymous (not verified) | Sun, 2008-09-28 17:33

He should go in front of the people who support their families and ask that question. Then try to convince these same people to hug trees rather than make an honest living to put their kids through school. Another know-it-all foreigner!

Are you a troll?
Flipper | Sun, 2008-09-28 18:42

Seems to me your comment is designed to stir people up, particularly those who care about what has happened at Dawn Beach, elsewhere, and is still going on, the environmental rape of the island. Perhaps you don't know the Westin has Philippino house maids, or that "Pinnochio" Roy lied when he said the project would first create 450 jobs, then 300, then 250. I suggest you go take a stroll around the resort and ask the staff where they are from. I think you will find a large percentage are foreigners.

Whether they 'know it all' is up for debate, but its seems clear to me that Mr. Martin is a highly educated and respected man and your criticism and scornful remark puts you somewhere else on the scale of 'knowing it all', the other end. Is your problem with 'foreigners' in general, or just people smarter than you are?

Some people use the anonymous comment option here so they can talk freely and not be afraid of consequences. Some use it to avoid being identified as a fool. Please take your bigotry and ignorance elsewhere, this site seeks intelligent and meaningful discussion and debate and you don't fit in, sorry.

And thank you Mr Martin, for saying publicly what we have said here many times, it's great to have an educated opinion on Roy.

Guess you're not from around here as you don't even know this island. If you're from here or live here shame on you. This poster was on the land of Mr. Richard Gibson across Le Grand Marche at the round-a-bout. Dutch politicians aren't allowed billboards on the french side. Just to keep you informed correctly so the readers of the sxmpe are aware of what really happens and where.

Dr. Voodoo was clear in what he wrote: 'The "idiot" in question is pictured in front of a relatively unspoiled part of the island, Grand Case, on the French side'.

But you are in such a rush to play the you-aint-from-here-so-shut-up card, you forgot to check who would be the "idiot" in question after posting what you wrote.

Shame on you, sxmlocalboy!!!

Arturo Oscuro

(Arturo, not sure sure sxmlocalboy was playing that card, seems to me he was genuinely confused and in his haste to correct what appeared to be a mistake he came across as so, I think he deserves the benefit of doubt. Please lets not make this an issue, I find Roy's choice of Grand Case much more interesting, don't you :) - Flipper)

Dear Arturo and Dr Vooddoo, I really don't care where you'll are from as it doesn't matter to me. What matters is that correct info is given. When I read your posting from a different view you're correct and I apologize for the posting.

Sorry, I should have been clearer
Dr. Voodoo | Mon, 2008-09-29 09:38

I meant the background of the sign, not where it was placed. Trust me, I've been here perhaps not all my life, but if you call yourself 'boy', it's probably been since before you were born. I may not be barn here, but I do make a claim to belong. :)

Anyway, back to the sign. Why would Roy use a background photo of Grand Case?

Dr. Voodoo

Re: Sorry, I should have been clearer
George MacGee | Mon, 2008-09-29 11:44

Thank you Dr. Voodoo for this humorous moment you provided me yesterday. I was tempted to respond with a snide remark about Roy fooling the voters with his image of an undeveloped St. Maarten during the elections, but I didn't respond because I couldn't for the life of me think of a good reason why Marlin would knowingly use a photo of Grand Case.

I must admit I saw this humongous poster everyday and never really paid any attention to the background photo, simply because I couldn't look past the hyprocritical face of Roy Marlin. But once you posted the image, it clicked in my mind immediately why the incongruity of that image always bothered me and I blamed it on Roy's hypocrisy.

You are Commissioner in charge of the Environment running for re-election after you have allowed the Dutch side landscape to be brutalized and you can't find any more pristine land to have photographed on the Dutch side that you used an image of a French side area in your campaign materials. How hypocritical is that???

Like I said before about DP politicians carjacking the environmental bandwagon, and in the words of Flipper, we have to watch out for the green fraudsters. I saw his pic today in the newspaper passing out environmental awareness cards. Hmmm.....

Pinnocio Roy
Flipper | Mon, 2008-09-29 19:38

With his history, it's impossible to give any real credence to his sudden concern about the environment, like a candle in the wind, he leans where the wind blows. Until there are politicians in office that genuinely care about the environment and have a record to back it up, the environmental groups like Pride, Nature and others will always be fighting and struggling. But elections are some time off and there are no green candidates out there either, so they have to take what they can get and I accept that.
I just hope they see through him as I do and avoid being used to advance his image as environmental, he is not. Fool me once, shame on you, foo me twice, shame on me. The guy has been behind the greatest environmental losses and disasters of the island, he is part of a government that continues that course. Pinnochio Roy and Plastic Louie, tagged.

SXM politicos greenwashing for World Tourism Day
Anonymous (not verified) | Sun, 2008-09-28 09:09

This past week, SXM along with the rest of the tourism world celebrated World Tourism Day.
A Tourism newspaper was produced and written by Fabian Badejo and inserted in the Daily Herald.
Many people did not see this paper as only a few were made. But if anyone who has one should put it here on SXMPE.
The theme this year dealt with Global Warming.
Reading this paper it appeared that our local politicians who never speak about the environment, had a load to say as if they are experts in the field. Amazing also, they spoke about the issues as if they were hard core environmentalists.
They know their stuff man. Two articles come to mind; Loui Laveist our own local idiotus, wants to be called the Plastic Bag Man. He is quoted as saying he used be called the Lagoon Man for all the activism he has done for the Simpson Bay lagoon and now, his stand on the plastic bag issue.
Hilarious! Then, Roy Marlin says he believes in wind energy for SXM.
In the case of Roy, I cannot believe the turn around. Didn't he just make a statement not too long ago that we have to stick to importing oil for the GEBE generators?
So either he has a sudden change of heart or he is greenwashing himself for World Tourism Day theme.
As for our local idiotus Lou Lou, there were 2 letters in the papers contradicting this poor fellow who appears to have hijacked a campaign that was started by an environmental group.
These politicians will continue thinking they can fool when it suits them and their world themes. It is up to the public to keep on top of their nonsense and expose them for who they are.
In the Herald, Roy Marlin also said our coral reefs have to be protected, how the heck can he make such statements when he was solely responsible for destroying the reefs in front of Dawn Beach. In 2005, he said the economy was more important to him than the environment as he has to create jobs.
Mind you, he was not Commissioner of Labour nor Commissioner of Economic Affairs, he was Commissioner for the Environment.
Now that he is Commissioner for Tourism, he is quoted now as a protector of Coral Reefs. What a bunch of baloney-This is flip flopping on serious issues.
