Some what bemused I observed the St. Maarten Council of Churches rush to the defense of Minister Leeflang in her quixotic quest against homosexual marriage. In 2007 the High Court in Holland settled this matter once and for all. The arguments against registering a homosexual marriage, (performed in Holland ,) in Aruba were firmly rejected, not once, but four times. Once in First Instance, then in appeal. The Solicitor General of the Kingdom in his advice to the High Court in Holland recommended rejection of the Aruban appeal. The High Court then rejected the appeal, all of Aruba ’s pleadings about cultural differences notwithstanding.

Leeflang surely knows this. That is why her objections must be seen for what they are: A political stunt, highlighting the fundamental dishonesty which religion and politics share. If you want to be part of the Kingdom, you must accept homosexual marriages performed in another part of the Kingdom is the attitude of the High Court. This is not unlike the situation in the U.S. where states which at present do not allow homosexual marriage are faced with the dilemma of how to treat homosexual marriages performed in states where it is allowed.

Blacks and homosexuals both belong to a class of citizen who grapple with social acceptance. It is still within recent memory for example, that miscegenation (marriage between black and white) was unlawful in many areas in the U.S. Here in the Antilles , the thought of a black Lt. Governor would have been considered ludicrous, if not impossible, a mere fifty years ago. Religion was used to justify and support slavery for hundreds of years. Too many evils of the past and present were/are perpetrated in the name of religion. Think of the inquisition, in which hundreds of thousands were burned alive at the stake, with priests chanting and praying for their souls, or the wholesale slaughter of millions and millions of Indians by bible toting Christians. The racist regime in South Africa , was also deeply religious and used it to justify their inhumanity. The Klu Klux Klan reveled in religious regalia, the flaming cross being their signature mode of expression. The Mormons, who we can observe diligently recruiting in our community, for a long time held that blacks were “beasts of the field”, and not worthy of membership.

We should therefore tread carefully with respect to the current debate over homosexual marriage. Religion has been proven too often to be wrong in the past on social issues. If history is our guide, this will most probably be the case with homosexual marriage. It simply flies in the face of the undeniable historical trend towards more and greater personal freedom, across the line, not to believe that one day homosexuals too will be emancipated. Think of the freedom we enjoy today to belong to any religion we wish, join unions, the Black franchise (allowing blacks to vote and hold public office – Think Obama ) women’s suffrage (allowing women the same). Sure, all change is unsettling. Dr. Hillary Beckles writes that many whites left Barbados , at independence, disgusted at the thought of living in a country with a black Prime Minister. Blacks have been some of the biggest beneficiaries of this trend towards greater personal freedom. To the churches I therefore say: Get used to it! To black folk I say: as beneficiaries of the historical trend towards greater personal freedom, please do not be so uncharitable towards others who long for the same social acceptance you aspire to. Using the very same religion, which was used to exclude and marginalize us for so long, to now marginalize and exclude homosexuals makes us look so dumb!

Finally, about the fundamental dishonesty shared by religion and politics: Both rely on “pie in the sky” promises to attain their goals. Think of the political slogan, “a chicken in every pot” or the religious promise of heaven. Islamic jihadists are sent on suicide missions convinced that they will end up in heaven. The fundamental dishonesty lies in the fact that their religious leaders know full well that once safely dead, they can never return to reproach them if they end up in hell instead of heaven!

Such unexpected support of the subject. I commend those. I, Larry Geer am a Gay Man that lived on the Island several years, was Vice President of Animals R Friends, a Lion, SXM Pride, Enviro 1, gave many years of service to the people and the Island, but yet I did not sleep with anyone on the Island, Local or Tourist because of the negative consequences and the so called Religious Hippocrits, yet I no longer live their due to the Lt. Governor not re-newing my residence permit due to my either being a homosexual or outspoken on many injustices to the Enviornment or being a supporter of Gracita Arrindell , Leader of the P.P.A., so perhaps the Lt. Governor is closed minded as well. Loving one another regardless of their sexual preference cannot be wrong, Love is Love.
P.S. Mr. Brison and others I am so proud of your articles. although I was denied by the Lt., Governor, Sint Maarten will always remain a wonderful part of my life..

Sincerely,

Larry Geer

Gay marriages

Nicely put Mojo.

When people think of homosexuality they think of a bunch of people out there performing all sort of ridiculous sexual activities which acts in many cases are commited by upstanding heterosexuals or bisexuals (none gay people) just for physical (sexual) enjoyment .

As I understand it, same sex marriages is based on two people, feeling true love for each other and who would like to make their union official as partners. They are not asking anyone to adapt their lifestyle or that every country and every city perform the marriages. All they are asking for is to respect their rights to choose their soul mates and recognize/register the union/marriage once it was legally performed in a country or city that recognizes same.

I also would like to know what the "Book" has imposed as punishment by man on those who are gay. If I read clearly, GOD is our judge and he will deal with us individually when we stand before HIM.

A God fearing heterosexual.

Finally a lucid commentary on this whole discussion.

We locals - both black and white - should be indeed the last to be uncharitable towards others who long for the same social acceptance we aspire to.

Well said my brother, Brison, well said !!!

Bravo

Quite entertaining...

Wow! Hilarious in a way but after you read this twice, one must think which way we're going? With progress came change and with the new status more changes. Are we ready, mentally, morally, culturally, socially equipped for such a lifestyle or acceptance? That said, we like some U S states will have to provide some 'white paper' to protect these islands and people from this practice of homosexuals marriage or God forbids, even to think of it. We do not have problems with people living their lives as they wish wherever. The people of this island, with most not religious but Christians, cannot sit by and let this become a part of our lives. We are a God fearing people who believe inGod's words and the return of our Savior, Jesus Christ. And by the way, instead of wasting time on the dutch practice, let's fix our own backyards and help form better communities, focus on youth deterioration, crime and the economy. There's so much going on around us that we can't even begin to think how to solve yet we have time to concentrate on the dutch practices. Stand up for once and declare "WE WILL NOT". Be careful for what you wish.

Roots, for my people

Your quote: "cannot sit by and let this become a part of our lives" and "let us fix our own backyards"
This is a part of our own backyard.

Obviously whether we are or not equipped in any way for such a lifestyle it is already part of us, you said we should stand up and declare 'WE WILL NOT" so .....

What do you propose we do with the homosexuals living here ?.
Is it alright to be a gay person as long as you do not want to get married ?
Should be lock them (H.S.'s) up in camps (gay city) and beat homosexuality out of them ? or
Should we put them on an ark and set them out to sea ?

I am very much interested in you views on this.

Denicio spot on

You don't have any problem with people living their lives as they wish...

But they got to believe in fantasy figures and follow the 'book'. I won;t call it the 'good book' as perhaps you might, because this book has caused so much misery, death and ignorance to the human race it could only be considered bad.

I got married not so long ago. The Church had NOTHING TO DO WITH IT. NOTHING AT ALL.

No one is asking the NA to perform same sex marriages, just to recognize that other countries do and that those marriages must be recognized in the society as a commitment of love and that each partner has the SAME rights, not MORE rights. sheeesh...

Really, go read your fantasy story collection again and instead of cherry picking the stuff that fits your closed mind view, look for the stuff about love, tolerance, understanding and peace.

I see both perspectives and
The Architect | Sun, 2008-09-07 07:46

I see both perspectives and to honest to defend this perspective from a biblical
point of view won't work for someone who doesn't believe the bible.
Or to convince people who believe in the bible that gay marriage should be accepted won't work either.

Instead of having these points why not bring arguments based on the law.

What I find should be done is a referendum should be held with the options, Should Gay-marriages be legal? And then let democracy decide through the public voicing their opinions by voting. Then all the ones who are for and against will have a voice and whatever the outcome we accept it.

If it's not decided in your favor another referendum can be held..but it won't change the fact that work will be carried out on the winning choice.

Every place should have a right to decide. Courts don't make the laws and in this case it shouldn't be the deciding factor. The Government, whether it's the Island or the Lands Government makes the law.

Whether you like to admit it or not St Maarten/NA has a different culture then Holland, which isn't a bad thing. But instead of the courts changing laws why not give the public a chance to decide.

I don't believe that only a select few, whether it's government or the judicial system should have the say in every matter. In general more referendums should be held for more topics, That's when I believe you'll see more of democracy on the islands/in the world

I understand both perspectives but this will never bring solutions. These two perspectives will never change. So lets start focus on bringing actions into existence.

If the people choose for Gay-Marriage then so be it!. If they don't choose for Gay Marriage so be it also!
