Police Officer Arrested, Suspended and Released---Investigations Continues - 15th July 2008

From SMN News

Philipsburg: --- A police officer identified as S was arrested and released after questioning on Saturday. The officer in question has been involved with an alleged kidnapping of four prostitutes from an exotic night club. Chief Prosecutor Taco Stein confirmed the arrest of the officer whom he said has been released since it could not be proven that the officer kidnapped the women who were later deported.
Stein said that there are still two charges against the cop but these charges do not require he be kept in pretrial detention. The officer he said has been suspended pending the outcome of the trail. Some weeks ago SMN News broke the story which involved the rookie cop in a brothel mix up. After breaking the news an investigation began which led to the arrest this past Saturday. SMN News tried effortlessly to get someone from the Police Department to confirm the arrest over the weekend however; no one from the police department was willing to speak on the case.

On July 18 The Daily Herald Published the following under the headline "Police officers’ love affair turns sour, gunshots fired":

Daily Herald - Police officers’ love affair turns sour, gunshots fired - 18th July 2008

Audio - Island Times - Police shoot at police - 18th July 2008

sxmislandtime.com also commented on the events here:
The Interesting part here is as Daily Herald put it, " C.’s release has reportedly left several of his police officer colleagues furious. They contend that by law the incident should be considered attempted murder and C. should have been held in custody."

Even more interesting is reporting (maybe speculation ?) by http://www.smn-news.com on July 18th.
Here's the quote:
"Officer Philips was seen coming out of the Philipsburg Police Station yesterday morning, she was visibly shaken and traumatized over what took place earlier in the day"
According to reliably information the male officer once acted upon his own and locked down Club Déjà vu after the same female officer lost her gun while she was allegedly under the influence of alcohol at that club. Detective Cassiana is not an acting prosecutor yet he closed down the establishment and conducted an illegal “house search”. The female officer bag was found in the garbage bin of the club the source said. It is not clear if the gun was ever recovered since the incident was neatly placed under the rug.
The incident at Club Déjà vu happened the same Sunday night when the Census office employee Orlando Gumbs was found dead. However, the police did not release any reports on the incident. "
----------------------------

What is it? Incredible coincidence that shots are fired and same 2 cops are involved? Is smn-news.com trying to imply that the "house search" of the Club Déjà vu is related to the murder? Was the "lost" weapon ever recovered? Was it the same type of weapon that was used to commit the murder?
It wouldn't surprise me!
I'll even further the "conspiracy theory" here:
The female officer was, according to smn-news.com, shaken when leaving the police station. That took place several hours AFTER the shooting, so why was she still shaken?
Maybe because one of the officers involved, in the heat of anger threatened to blow the cover over the events at Club Déjà vu, and link the missing gun with the murder? Basically, if you shoot someone, you need to "lose" that gun. But what if the gun is a cop's service weapon? Well, you start the "theater" in the Club, to make it look like the gun was accidentally lost. Sort of like OJ Simpon's search for the killer of his wife.
But this is only my speculation.
My question really is this: with SXM police chief, commissioner and some other top cops under indictment or have been already convicted on several counts, with the almost daily stories about cops acting, to put it mildly, "inappropriately", how can anyone who has a stake in what happens in SXM be against the supervision from Holland? And against bringing supervising officers and internal affairs officers from Holland or any other country, as long as they are competent and not corrupt? Can it really be called "re-colonization?" This is a mess, and Everybody's in it. Who in the SXM PD can you really trust?

I think the only solution is:
1) Bring supervising officers and internal affairs investigators FROM HOLLAND until the SXM PD gets "completely cleaned up."
2) Rotate police chiefs and commissioners and internal affairs staff every 6 months. Why? It's hardly enough time to become corrupt. There's no reason to offer a bribe to someone who'll be leaving post in a few weeks time!
There always be "rotten apples" among the honest cops, but a lot more needs to be done to discover who they are, and take away their guns and badges!

get real
Anonymous (not verified) | Sat, 2008-07-19 07:18

I am complete against the way the police handle this case, but please get real. The incident at the club has nothing to do with the murder of that persons. Before you write things like that do you think on the family of the one that was murder when you say something like that or do you just think of making more confusing in the police that already is there. When the so call reporter wrote this ans put in about the incident in the club, she did it on purpose to get this kind af reaction and you felt for it. Reporting something and linking it to a murder of a persons is sick. That is not reporting the news that is causing confusions for your own benefit without thinking about the pain you are causing that family who are already in pain. Before writing this you should of find out first if this reporting is credible and not just run with it. again i am complete against the way the police handle this affair, but it is sick to try to link it to that boys murder. Do you think any one that was involved in a shooting incident can just walk around a couple hours after like nothing happen. Any one would shaken up. Why do we have to link this to a murder. Get real.

I do not believe the reporter intended to imply that the murder was related to the loss of the police officer's gun. Each time I read the article, I get the sense that the reporter was trying to say that the police took advantage of the fact that a "bigger" story broke that day, so they did not feel obligated to release the "smaller" story that involved a few of their own. Seems to me that a police officer losing their gun should also be front page news no matter what other stories break that day.

irresponsible reporting
Anonymous (not verified) | Sat, 2008-07-19 10:48

I agree with Anonymous #2. reporting should not be speculative but factual. creating this link leaves room for speculation and makes one wonder why the two were linked together. the article clearly attempted to suggest that the missing gun and the shooting were related especially when mention was made that the issue was swept under the rug. reporters (or badly-wannabees) have to be more responsible for what they they report and not be sensational as in this case just because. this can reopen wounds in the family.
