GEBE & Geothermal energy

From West Indies Power Holding BV

"Geothermal Power is the use of super heated hot water and steam located in the Earth (Geothermal Resources) which are extracted by specially designed wells (Well field) and allowed to convert to steam when it reaches the surface. That steam is then collected in pipes (Gathering System) and sent to a geothermal steam turbine which uses the steam to generate electricity (Power Plant)."

Let me start by stating that I am not in any way affiliated with West Indies Power Holding BV or do I seek to do so. I am an objective observer and a consumer of GEBE electricity and am of the opinion that GEBE is currently overcharging their customers and do little (nothing) to seek ways of reducing the price of electricity.

From recent reports in The Daily Herald, one can gather that local energy and water supplying company GEBE has been made an offer by Nevis based West Indies Power to buy geothermal derived energy (= clean energy) but up to this point (June 19th, 2008) GEBE has not responded to their offer of buying clean energy from them.

Why, you ask. Please read on.

To tap into the “Nevis energy” is relatively simple: GEBE would "only" have to lay an undersea electrical feeder cable from Nevis straight to Cay Bay and plug that into their existing electricity grid (simply stated).

Compared to the investment in the recently purchased 2 Megawatt generators (US$ 30 million) at Wartsila, this investment can be considered as peanuts.

By using geothermal energy as the primary GEBE energy source and use the current (and ordered) generators as a back up, GEBE would be able to make an end to "load shedding" once and for all. They would have a full-fledged back up in the event the undersea electrical cable gets damaged.

Furthermore, by tapping into the clean energy, GEBE would be able to DRASTICALLY lower the costs for electricity for every consumer on St. Maarten!

Quick and simple math:

According to The Daily Herald, Nevis estimates the cost of their geothermal electricity to be at approx. US$ 0.12 per KWH.

GEBE currently charges approximately the following for electricity:
US$ 1.62 per KWH (for the first 100 KWH) + US$ 0.22 per KWH for the Fuel Clause. Total: approx. US$ 1.84 per KWH.

If GEBE would sell the Nevis electricity for US$ 0.75 per KWH (remember the cost for Nevis electricity is US$ 0.12 per KWH + the investment in the installing of the undersea cable), there will still be a savings of US$ 1.07 per KWH (!!) for each and every consumer on St. Maarten.

The Fuel Clause could be eliminated once and for all (!!) because GEBE would not use fossil fuel any more to produce electricity, they would use geothermal energy that does not require any fossil fuels to be generated.

In times where the price of oil is nearing US$ 140 a barrel, affecting everybody’s pocket this might be the most responsible thing to do for the people of St. Maarten by a government owned company….

Or is there a hidden agenda (by higher powers) that prevents GEBE to divert from fossil fuel generated power?

Who supplies GEBE with their fossil fuels?

Isn’t it the same guys (family to a commissioner) that own the Shell gas stations?

If so, it would not be hard to figure out that these guys would do everything to prevent their great deal from disappearing…..or am I just imagining things here?

Please enlighten me!

Geothermal dude to speak on SXM: sept 10
Anonymous (not verified) | Thu, 2008-09-04 13:50

The CEO of West Indies Power, Mr. Kerry McDonald will be giving a presentation on SXM during the SHTA quarterly meeting on Sept 10, 2008. The main stream media will be there as well.

Maybe someone from SXMPE can get an interview with him?

GEBE will give a press conference today and Brooks will be asked to give account for their incomprehensible fuel clause.

Why do they not see the light of the possibilities through alternative energy???

$32 million wasted?

It would be fair to say I was one of the more outspoken critics to GEBE's plans to purchase 24mw of new generator capacity last year. So it's a little gratifying to finally see GEBE on the front page of the Today defending itself and it's $32 million mistake.

Mistake? Yes, I consider it a mistake and really bad planning, par for the course for the recently resigned Roy. Oil prices are not going to be coming down, they are going to keep climbing at a steady pace and we are totally and completely reliant upon it.

The solutions to our planet's energy needs will come from a variety of sources, wind, solar, wave, geo thermal, bio fuels and others just now being thought of, plus a comprehensive range of energy saving and conservation technologies and ideas. Here in SXM we have a government that has derided and scorned conservation and environmental ideas as restrictions upon their blinkered view that progress is all about construction and economic growth. It is blinkered because the island is only 17 sq miles and this path leads to a dead end. Progress can be measured in many other ways.

There was a plan to link the surrounding islands grids once, haven't heard anything about it since.

Plan to connect islands’ four electricity plants ~St. Maarten, St. Martin, Anguilla sign MOU - 11th April 2006

I made this photo video last year about the plan to buy generators. I believe the $32 million invested in purchasing them would have been much better invested in this scheme (linking) and other cleaner and renewable energy projects, such as leasing roof space for solar etc. But we have a government that approved the building of an airport that doesn't even collect rain water, a government that can't even plan to phase out and ban plastic bags. A government that put the dump in the middle of the main town, that is years late in planning concerning our waste, including our sewage.

St. Maarten doesn't have 'leaders', at least not in this government. In my opinion of course. :)

The news from the past couple months on this issue are below, including the idiot plans to reduce excise and govt subsidies to help with fuel price rises, indicating a failure in some of the so called 'powers that be' to really have a comprehension of the issue and the future the World is facing. I've argued in the past that instead of reducing prices, they should have kept them the same and invested the extra money in alternative energies. All they did is reduce their ability to plan for the future and increase the impact on the public when prices eventually went up again, which it was clear as day they would.

Is Brooks an idiot?
Caribdude | Mon, 2008-07-07 02:08

With the Opec president warning of no end to oil price rises and speculators speculating on $200 by year end. we hear that GEBE is going to order a new generator before the end of the year. Another $16 million invested in an energy source that we need desperately to be breaking away from.

New generator - 30th June 2008

Frans makes some weak comments about the need for the island to turn towards renewable and cleaner energy sources, but it's lame. Someone needs to ring an alarm bell and be demanding GEBE and the island govt makes a serious energy and development study before this order is made.
