Climate Change and World Resources - Update

It's been a while since I wrote a blog rounding up the news on Climate Change and I had tons of links saved up in my bookmarks, it was time to clear them out.

Below you will find a selection of news and video links that I think are well worth checking out, I've added many more to the SXM PE Global Warming / Global Resources Thread. i don't time to write much about them now, but I think most of them speak for themselves anyway. Feel free to add your own links and comments below.

TED Talks is a wonderful forum where intellectual and scientific minds gather to discuss and present ideas, studies and theories. There is really more than most people have time to spend watching, but two that I felt worth sharing here is an update from Al Gore called New thinking on the climate crisis and 6 Ways Mushrooms Can Save the World.

Next up is a new resource that helps you learn How to Talk to a Climate Skeptic, with answers to just about any argument or question they come up with.

Below is a selection of stories worth checking out, as I mentioned, more have been posted on the Climate Change page.

It seems most people really don't 'get it' Caribdude, as per usual, your blog posts on Climate Change get very few comments and the most important news on this site, the most important news for ALL of us, is neglected or ignored.

Or is it just as you said before, that it's just too big, too huge, all encompassing, for us to give it the serious attention and priority it requires? What can we do? Sure, wew can turn off our appliances when not in use, we can change our bulbs, be more careful with our purchases, but at the end of the day, it is the governments of the World that need to react and they, as to be expected, are more focused on national self interests and tied up with differences of opinion on how the issue of Climate Change needs to be tackled.

I think, like you, that we are screwed, that we will go down as the most despised generations in history. That does not mean I will give up, I will go down fighting, but being able to say "I told you so" gives absolutely no comfort at all.

James Hanson is the top climate scientist at NASA, 20 years ago he sounded the alarm on Climate Change. His latest speech, on the 20th Anniversary of that warning is really the final siren as the ship starts to sink.

NASA Scientist's Global Warming Warning: "This Is The Last Chance" - 23rd June 2008

Global Warming Twenty Years Later: Tipping Points Near - PDF of speech.

GEBE should immediately announce an emergency review of the future power concerns of the island and where it will come from. The two generators should be canceled, EVEN if a fine needs to be paid. (Roy, the Exco and Brooks should pay!) Immediate high level talks should be started with the surrounding islands and the EU to create a program leading to clean, renewable energy for all the islands as a consortium.

But it's not going to happen is it. We are led by people who refuse to see the truth of the situation, who, like what seems the majority, prefer to ignore and pretend it doesn't exist, or that they can do nothing about it. It's too expensive they will say, or that SXM is too small to make any difference. The first is false because they do not consider the long term costs, the second is immoral and ignorant, because at the very least moving in the direction of cleaner energies would prepare the island better for the future that is coming our way.

Anyway, it's such a drag to be depressed, better not to think about the bad things eh? Just turn on that plasma tv and airco, prepare yourself a nice snack and drink that came from half way across the World and relax. Don't worry. be happy!

*sigh*

Climate Change Criminals

Hanson argues that CEO's of corporations that have deliberately misled the public and financed the promotion of doubt and denial in the face of overwhelming evidence of Climate Change should be put on trial. I think he should have included politicians too, perhaps even more so because they are the ones who are supposed to be acting in the publics interest and on their behalf.

If you have never heard of Hanson then I suggest a google or Youtube search. This segment of 60 Minutes a year or so ago will explain much more about what I am on about.

It's not about how much of an impact or effect SXM can have being so small, it's now about preparing and planning for our future and really, our survival. Diversifying our economy and becoming more self sufficient in terms of energy and food are two vital elements to that future and survival.

No ice at the North Pole this year - 26th June 2008

There are solutions, but the problem will not be confronted and overcome by foundations and volunteers promoting awareness, it needs governments and politicians to make it their priority and include it in all plans and policies.

Algae: Biofuel, Cooking Oil, Health Supplement (VIDEO) - 26th June 2008

I'm still waiting for a SXM politician to ring the alarm bells with this, not one of them really seems to have the balls to speak up and champion the issue. Are there any leaders out there at all? Or are they all just followers, one by one jumping in front of the growing environmentally concerned crowd and yelling 'follow me!".
