Enviro Week - EWE - 4-8 June 2008

Imagine... a park full of green products and services that will help St. Maarten become a bit more of a nature friendly island and a more livable island for the younger generation. With our eco-expo we make it a reality and you can even participate with your green products or services.

A solar cooker contest, a car that runs on water (French Lycee), a car that runs on biofuel, local biological food, green cleaning products, wood crafting, local natural art, solar heaters, water saving and energy saving products, water from air and a raffle. There will also be workshops in between with related to agriculture, solar power, energy and water saving and some interesting keynote speakers. Details, updates and press releases below.

June 3rd and 4th

Movie 11th HOUR. To judge from all the gas-guzzlers still fouling the air and the
plastic bottles clogging the dumps, it appears that the news that we are killing
ourselves and the world with our greed and garbage hasn’t sunk in. That’s one
reason “The 11th Hour,” an unnerving, surprisingly affecting documentary about
our environmental calamity, is such essential viewing. It may not change your life,
but it may inspire you to recycle that old slogan-button your folks pinned on their
dashikis back in the day: If you’re not part of the solution, you’re part of the
problem. Produced and narrated by Leonardo DiCaprio. Fundraising movie for St.
Maarten Pride Foundation. Starting with a wine and cheese cocktail party at 19.00
and the movie at 20.00 sponsored by Nagico. Entrance 12 USD.

Tickets 12 US$ are available at Texaco star Mart on Bush Road, Philipsburg Theatres and members of St. Maarten Pride Foundation.

Knock, Knock, it's the envirormental destroyers and protectors
sxm4life971 | Tue, 2008-06-10 12:02

It's true in SXM that we are the friendly island, and we are faithful to the expression: "Together we stand, divided we fall'.
All of this to say, what a shame, can you believe that we barely have any historical monument, (a piece of the slave wall, the old house,...) What's next we may ask? Well, let me be the one to answer you: the lagoon.
Have you seen Cupecoy, has anyone ever wonder what happen to the fishes which were in lagoon?
Oh I assume you don't know the story, well of course to the port in order yatch and mega yatchs to enter, you need dredge,.. but when one get rids of the water, where do the living beings go?

Well I guess I need to ask the environmental watchdogs, but I don't hear them ringing the alarm. Oh no, I won't even dear ask the government because they are too busy counting up their dirty money.

Well as I always say, soon SXM another Luis or soon we will be drinking our own waste.

This is from a concern citizen just rining the alarm.

Please don't take offence at the title of my comment, but it seems to me you have been missing quite a lot. Perhaps you should take a browse through this website, which now holds over 11,000 news stories, photos and blogs going back over 3 years. Try the main page blogs, or the Environment Thread, SXM Pride Thread, or the Nature Foundation Thread.

The alarm bells have been ringing for years, maybe you just got used to the noise that you didn't notice it anymore. Have you been sitting on the sidelines? Perhaps you should get up and get involved, join an Environmental watchdog as you call them, go to the events they organize, help them fundraise, write letters to the papers.

I'm glad more and more citizens are starting to sit up and take notice, but in the end they should not rely on others who volunteer and sacrifice their time, energy and finances to do all the work for them. If you want to know who is responsible for the state of the island, it's environment, its culture and the slow and gradual degradation of it's friendly and beautiful character, look to the DP and the people who voted for them. They have been running the show most of the last 40 odd years haven't they?

First of all, I thank your for your comment. But to answer your question, I haven't been on the sidelines. I have been on websites, and I have being doing something for my island. But as in the title, I did use the word Protectors, which means, that someone is doing an action. But according, to what I spoke about and being on other islands, my comments was too motivate, and also to create awareness. I do agree that I am pleased that people are being more vigilent and knowledgable. If someone, who is doing good for the environment, culture and the island feel offensive from my comment, please don't. But I think everyone has to agree that more has to be done for the island.

Glass Crusher at EWE Enviro-Expo
Local Hero | Sun, 2008-06-08 10:28

A few months ago the Sand Bar on Isle del Sol, Snoopy Island to us locals, invested in a small glass crusher, it is on show at EWE.

Glass crusher at ECO-EXPO 2008 St.Maarten

I guess any major bar owner with a thinking brain could see the benefit of getting one. Really, our government should have had one years ago at the dump, we could have buried so much crushed glass under the Westin, the Cupecoy developments, the Airport and all the trenches for our cables. But Roy was in charge so....

Great show at EWE people, try and get there today if you didn't get there tomorrow, well worth it.

Enviro Week
larrygeer | Sun, 2008-06-01 01:04

Hope all goes well with this years Enviro Week, just a a word of caution though. Those that are not permanent residents, assist at your own risk. I was there for many , serving the Island with honor voluntary capacities, community , NGO's, Vice President of Animals R Friends.etc., I gave my heart and soul to the Island, met all the criteria for re-newal, but I had an N.V., it also met all the criteria, the Government took my licence fee last Septemeber, but they turned down my residency permit after being on the Island several Years, most groups know who I am for all the volunteering that I did, but the Lt. Governor appartently saw it fit to discard me like a piece of trash.

Of course I am bitter, I have gone thru therapy and several illnesses due to this disappointment, as I thought I would live my life out on the Island and be with the People and Island I love so much.

My heart was left in Sint Maarten, unfortunately the Government needs to learn how to lern how to do Nation building. I will always know in my heart that I left a good impression and lasting effect to many people and of course the Animals without voices.

I am so sorry that I will miss the 2nd annual Enviro Week, but I was sure there for the first and gave many hours.

Good luck to all.
