Here's a video from the Wall St. Journal:

I wonder what's going to happen with SXM luxury real estate in the next year or two?

I find this really.... how shall I say it.... interesting?
http://www.thedailyherald.com/news/daily/k292/attack292.html

where is the island going? unless there's some hidden subtext that I'm not "getting", it seems to me that the road ahead is clear: rocks today, knives tomorrow, machine guns next week.

what kind of country is St. Maarten going to be?

Why do kids join gangs?
sxmmartini | Fri, 2008-05-09 09:54

Acceptance - Many kids feel that they are not getting the attention they feel they deserve. The gang essentially becomes their family.
Excitement - This group of kids love the high of committing crimes and getting away with it.
To earn money - Gang members turn towards using the gang to make a profit through illegal activities. Selling narcotics, robberies, burglaries, auto thefts, and other property crimes are common in many gangs.

There are two gangs one in Dutch Quarter and the other in Philipsburg known to all as Down Street Gang.

Let's make the Youth on St. Maarten a priority!

We need to organize Marches and bring to the forefront the issues relating to crime and violence on SXM.

We need someone to carry the candle and shed light among our students.

Does anyone rmember Tommy from Portofino on Front ST?
barcann | Fri, 2008-05-02 18:08

I'm going back years now. Tommy Brookins and his wife Laura owned Portofino restaurant on Front Street. They had the best pizzas ever.
Tommy was quite a character....an African American man who was a professional musician, well known, and had many tales to tell.
Does anyone remember him? Does anyone have any information about when he died?
I know he died and was buried here in SXM. I think around the early 80's.
His wife Laura then moved to the french side and opened a pizza place at the entrance to the Marigot Marina.
Does anyone know what happened to her?
I am in touch with Tommy's great great niece who is doing his biography, and is looking for any stories about him. She need photos also since she has no photos of him. I am sure there must be some photos of Tommy floating around on the island.
If there are any old timers out there, who remember Tommy and have any information or photos , please email me.

Does AUC do animal experiments in lab?
Anonymous (not verified) | Thu, 2008-05-01 19:48

Does AUC do animal experiments in lab?
If so it is unnecessary to use animals in medical training, because there are humane and effective non-animal teaching methods - cadavers, patient simulators and sophisticated computer programs.
Thanks in advance.

Ooooh, touchy subject! It pits everyone, from the 'I love cockfighting crowd' to the fanatic PETAziod and everyone in the middle. I'm in the middle myself, I oppose a lot of what does go on because as you say, there are plenty of alternatives. However, I also understand the need to use animals, such as mice and rats at times and I accept that.

It's a wonder really that our SMMC doesn't appear to have an kind of intern program going on with the AUC. Does anyone know if it does? I suspect that there is very little that can't be taught using the above mentioned methods and hospital classes and experience.

I have no idea if or what animals may be used at the AUC, I hope your question will be seen as just that, a question, not an accusation.(I assume it is a question, though your wording is a little sketchy if so.) Trollish and Flammer comments will not be published, if anyone doesn't know what those words mean, look them up :) - Flipper

AUC

AUC is a 2 year medical school that only teaches Basic Sciences. Interns are after they graduate Medical School (4 years). Medical School students do Clinical rotations in their 3rd year and Subinterns in their 4th year. They are not yet physicians.
