Corruption in St. Maarten

A friend of mine was having lunch at a Dutch Side restaurant a while back when he noticed a prominent politician having lunch with a local business person. There were smiles all around the table, handshakes and at one point at least one envelope was passed from the business person to the politician.

Eventually lunch ended, and both gentlemen left, but the envelope, a rather fat one, fell to the floor and wasn't noticed.

My friend didn't touch it but decided to stick around. After a while he saw a restaurant employee pick up the envelope. It had no markings on the outside so the employee opened it to see whose it was. Imagine his surprise when he found lots of American bills inside.... it was unmistakable to my friend from his vantage point that many bills were in that envelope. My friend said the employee's eyes bugged out.

Minutes later the employee was approached by the politician, who came back realizing he had dropped the envelope. He thanked the employee for picking up the dropped envelope. Away went the politician with his envelope filled with money.

Perhaps this was a personal debt or a business debt. Perhaps not. In any case, after all these years of "alleged" envelopes, lunches, dinners, breakfasts and secret meetings, it is very interesting to see Dutch investigators looking under the rugs of our elected politicians. One wonders just how many empty envelopes smelling of dirty money they could uncover.

To find out more about corruption on SXM we must all watch NOVA....www.novatv.nl
They've posted two epidisodes on their website: one about corruption in general on the NA and one specifically on Curaçao. Saturday (in the Netherlands, I don't know about BVR) they will broadcast one on corruption in SXM and Bonaire.

Same problems on Curaçao concerning the environment.
Same problems in island government. They even had a short fragment of a videotaped rapsong recorded in the prison (bon futura?) of Curaçao, where prisoners are surprisingly in the posession of weapons.
First episode: interviewers visit our prison...the whole Dick Romkema affaire is discussed, bottom line: corruption goes unpunished.
200.000 NAF disappeared in deep pockets.

Hmm, I hope this is finally getting the ball rolling...a very unlikely event.

And?

Something about this comment sounds fishy.
Dont know if its true at all. Even though there is an overall impression that most politicians (if not all) are corrupted. Maybe something did happen and the witness is blowing it out of proportion.

Is it possible the witness felt they lost an opportunity?

What is the intension of the post anyway?

Is this a manusscript for an exciting new book? Great writing skills and what a surprise that the 'prominent politician' was male... stunning, really.

Anyway, if I was a publisher I'd totally sign you.

coincides with this article:

http://www.smn-news.com/Headline%20News/

Philipsburg: ---- A team of investigators from SOAB are in third week of investigation and research at the Department of Public Transportation SMN News learned. The source say that the team of officers who works mainly for government is looking into the issuance of licenses to car rentals, towing companies as well as bus and taxi licenses that were issued to a number of Haitians nationals. According to the information reaching SMN News is that many persons who obtained their bus and taxi permits does not even have Dutch passports while Dutch nationals are still on the waiting list.

The source said that the former head of the department had created his own structure within the department which raised eyebrows. The former director who is now head of security at Westin Resort was the sole person on the petit committee to advise the commissioner of transportation. The source said he was the chairman, secretary and advisor. One company that is also under the microscope of the SOAB investigators is a tour bus company located in Cay Hill who happens to be a good friend of the former director. They are supposedly looking into how the licenses for “G and T” were processed.

The investigators are also looking at who is responsible for controlling the school transportation since the island government is spending over 750,000.00 guilders monthly for the services that are provided free of charge to parents and this section is not controlled

750,000 nafs per month for school buses?
Local Hero | Tue, 2008-02-26 09:19

Thats 37,500 nafs PER DAY based on 20 days per month. As for licenses, we all know that sector directors are generally puppets or tools of commissioners.

It's been a long time coming.......

school busses charge students for outtings during school hours
Anonymous (not verified) | Tue, 2008-02-26 09:36

And thats not all. Students have to pay $2.- for a school bus if the class or school decides to take a educational outting during school hours.
Trips to butterfly farm, movies, cleanups, zoo, Airport-Harbour tours have to be paid by students during school hours.

Why should we believe this is the truth
Anonymous (not verified) | Tue, 2008-02-26 02:39

Do you really think we should just believe such a story. Come on. A friend of yours say and that is the proof that is enough. Please grow up. Mind you i am not saying Sint Maarten does not have a lot of corruption going on, but this one say and that one say is total B's.

Clarify
Anonymous (not verified) | Wed, 2008-02-27 14:29

Please clarify which government official and which restaurant where the meeting took place and them we will know the real story. It is very possible that this encounter took place and monies changed hands; however, we would be better informed if the truth comes to light.

gossip?
Anonymous (not verified) | Tue, 2008-02-26 09:11

Although I like to believe that the story is true because it confirms what a lot of people know or assume, for now I characterize this post as gossip. Unless there is any proof, names and numbers or other people that can confirm this story, I do not think we should pay more attention to it. What we need on this site are facts.

Facts?
caribsnooper | Wed, 2008-02-27 00:40

Trust me...I am not about to compromise a friend's well-being but this is a case where there is a credible eyewitness.

Cutting edge facts - NOT
Anonymous (not verified) | Wed, 2008-02-27 00:00

A friend of mine....saw.....envelopes.....dropped...politicians....

For a site that seems to at least pretend it stands for something desirable, this post is nothing more than a grotesque example of melee and fish market gossip. Not saying that there is anything wrong with that, but funny how many other posts or comments are ridiculed for being without a solid basis, and yet here we have a actual blog post that is based on nothing more than a "he say-she say" fable in the making.

Also, considering that this site gets so many hits from so many people on the island (or around the world for that matter), it's interesting to see that only 58 people took part in the recent poll. Not trying to benchmark here; merely pointing out that if indeed the poster of that gossip tale wanted to spread it out like butter to the masses, he probably should pick another medium.

Cheers

There seems to be a confusion
Flipper | Wed, 2008-02-27 02:24

SXM is open to anyone to post blogs, you too. When it has been rebuilt in the coming months it will be alot easier to post blogs and they will have their own page, with top rated or best written ones being promoted to the front page. So, one blog post or writer does not a whole website make or represent, we try only to moderate, not censor.
As for the poll, well, users have to sign in to vote, while sxm pe gets over 500 visits a day, there may only be a few comments, sometimes none. This is normal for weblogs, 90% of people just come to read, not to comment and write.
Anyway, in the new SXM PE registered users will be able to rate blog posts and people will have to make up their own minds which writers they respect and trust, and which they do not. Maybe you will want to write something yourself then. GIve it a couple months and you'll see something much different here.
