Education is Understanding - Teachers on Strike

image from SMN NEWS

The Teachers are on strike and who, knowing how they have been treated, can blame them? They have been fighting for new salary scales for several years now and have been offered nothing excuses and broken promises.

I support the teachers, I think the education system in SXM is a disgrace, schools getting donations to buy text books on hospitality, are you kidding? People give Sarah too much respect, she is very much like many others in her Exco and government, undeserving of it..

Sarah is the 'Queen of Photops, rarely does a new classroom get announced, built or opened without Sarah taking full publicity advantage. Always she grabs it, and the funny thing is, most of the time these new classrooms and computers are coming from Aid money, basically begging. Mostly.

Sarah and this government have followed a misguided policy of expanding schools so that they are cramped and strained when studies have repeatedly shown that small schools to be superior to large schools on most measures and equal to them on the rest. You want to know why so many of the youth today are failing in school and turning to crime and drugs? Go take a walk around a public school, I really see very little difference than when I was there 25 years ago.

Or you could read this news item from a highly respected Criminologist in June last year. Shortchanging our education system is what it is, building classrooms because thats the easiest and cheapest way, it's like building your house out of unwashed beach sand.

Note - I hereby claim title to creating a new way to describe ideas and projects that are cheap, poorly thought out and doomed to misery, "Beach Sand Thinking". I have a feeling I may use it quite often in my writing. :)

Sarah makes promises, last year right before the elections she promised a new school, we can all see that no date was mentioned. It's now almost a year after, I wonder how those plans are going?

The DH's Editorial today, Daily Herald Editorial - Who can blame them? is correct, I think only selfish people would. I understand this strike causes a great deal of difficulty to so many people and it damages children's education, but it's not the teachers fault. They are doing us all a good service, because this is not just about teachers getting the salaries and payments they are entitled and due, but also about our schools. Education is vital to a country's progress and development, sadly these two words translate to 'concrete and money' to some short sighted people.

you are mistaken Hady
Anonymous (not verified) | Wed, 2008-02-20 22:16

Hady, I like your blog about our education in shambles but you are mistaken when you say that nothing has changed since you were in school 25 years ago.
The schools now are more over crowded than they were 25 years ago. And today there are more schools than 25 years ago and they are all over crowded.
The massive influx of immigrants mainly from the Caribbean has contributed to them bringing their children and also many of them being born on the island. If you ask any old timer from back in the day, immigrant women that became pregnant on SXM from other islands had to leave SXM back to their island of origin in order to deliver their baby.
When this was changed I have no idea, but the effects we see now. Our schools are so over crowded, so much so that is a strain on the students but also on teachers. Teachers have to abide by the new Foundation Based Education system without teachers aids, without tools and with classrooms of 30 students. All this while FBE calls for smaller classes, a teachers helper and hands on learning tools for students.
Many of the schools do not have quiet areas where students can take a rest -no psycologist on premises for the children with problems and trust me there are plenty of those to go around. Public schools have become the dumping ground for children from anywhere with no back ground checks being done, again a strain on the teachers.
Children with behavioral problems, children from abused homes, children with learning problems, slow learners, all sorts of disorders, and teachers have no choice but to put up with their crowded class rooms of all sorts.
I do believe that most people support the teachers as this issue has been going on for so long, it is indeed disrespectful to the people who take it upon themselves to educate our children. If only our government will pay more attention to education for the next 10 years with upgrading all matters pertaining to education. And please we do not need the same new schools as the constant chant goes, we need less children.
New schools should offer something the others do not offer, special education, longer hours, trade schools, classes especially for difficult students, anger management courses, etc etc.

Teachers reveal truths about island finances

I think this issue reveals just how limited and SXM's finances are, living on the edge.

Revealing the Truth????
Anonymous (not verified) | Thu, 2008-02-28 15:43

How about we reveal the truth on whats really going on in the school particular

We all remember that one right? Students sleeping with the Teachers??? Mostly undocumented / slow learners go to that one.

From whats being told to me by some students, even though one Teacher was fired and 5 others given warning letters, the norm is now Teachers Failing Girl Students and having them do "Favors" to get the better grade. A very well known photographer has some nice pictures to share, Paparatzi style of the in and outs of one student and teacher in particular.

They want their Salaries??? for What, are we now paying them to give hands on Sex Education to our children???

What the government should do is take all that "Retroactive" money and launch a full scale investigation of that school in particular. All one needs to do is notice now near the gate this one teacher parks on the day something / someone is going to "Down" and watch from the sidelines on their travels to Leaning Hotel on Front Street.

(I removed the school name because you have given very little information to back up your accusations and, like your comment about the 'retroactive pay', you paint all the teachers with the same brush. Do you seriously think govt should take away long overdue and deserved pay increases from 100's of teachers who have nothing to do with it? - Flipper)

No
Anonymous (not verified) | Thu, 2008-02-28 16:37

Those that deserve it should get it, and its not only this school Flipper, its happening everywhere.

You should have left the name of the school, because there has already been documented cases on it happening there as i already mentioned 1 teacher was fired and 5 others warned.. .But its still happening. I was posting this in hopes they themselves read it and know people are watching and stop!!!! but now it makes no scense since the name of the school was removed.

Either way investigation needs to be made once again on that school and Pronto... currently one student complained about it and was put into another class and doing horribly because she was "Used to doing favors" and not learning a thing because of these bribes.

Its no wonder our youth is the way they are.. and if you haven't noticed many of the girls these days are "turning"... This usually happens when they are mistreated by the opposite sex..

Anyways i thought this would be the forum to send the hint, i guess not, seems people cant have their voice heard anymore even on a public forum, i didn't mention names, but i could. But where does that then leave the 2 girls confiding in me???

No doubts
Flipper | Thu, 2008-02-28 17:18

I don't doubt what you say, that there are teachers and student 'relationships' as you describe, I know it has happened before and I'm sure it still does. But let me ask you a question. Have these two girls that confide in you made statements to the police or prosecutor? Until that happens and the victims are prepared to stand by their accusations then you know as well as I do that it has no substance in court. Certainly not in terms of slander and libel, thank you for not putting names. Of course, if you are willing to stand up with your own name and make these accusations, thats different and up to you to prove or defend them.
We can discuss and will probably agree on how inadequate the social systems within our community and schools are, too few social workers, a screwed justice system where victims of abuse or violence drop charges for fear of retaliation or unnecessary embarrassment and shame. Children;s homes struggling to stay open, abused children to be returned to abusive situations, too few social workers to monitor them, etc etc.

I see that SMN News has a report about a 13yr old girl:

28th February 2008 - Philipsburg: --- An East Indian Guyanese national is now in police custody allegedly for molesting a 13 year old girl. The suspect appeared before the judge of instruction yesterday where his pretrial detention has been extended. A friend of family who wants to speak anonymously said hat the man have been interfering with the child over an extended period of time and the family did nothing to protect the child. The woman said that the child is pregnant for the man and the family did not want to press charges, instead they wanted immigration to deport him. According to the family friend is that the child relatives did not want the matter exposed because they felt the child has brought shame to them. The woman said she is not sure if the child mother took her to a doctor to do an abortion since they were highly contemplating that option. She said the man and his companion is living in the same house as the child and her parents and for this reason the family wanted to protect him. She said based on her understanding the man known as “Singh” is related to the child.

Yesterday the cock-eyed man who is lives on St. Maarten illegally was taken to the Court of First Instance where his pre-trail detention was extended.
Chief Prosecutor Taco Stein said that the parents of the child did file and official complaint of the incident and that even if the family did not want to press charges his office is prosecuting the case. Stein said he could not confirm if the child is pregnant or not.

Perhaps it is connected with this story. The most important thing that I see is that Taco would press charges even if the family did not want to. Too often in the past abusers have avoided prosecution by intimidation and threats and I' am guessing it's only because the girl is pregnant that they can make a case. This man must not be deported, he must spend his time in Point Blanche if convicted. To deport him would be to tell any foreigner that it's ok to rape and abuse children in St. Maarten, you will just get deported.

If you can get those two girls to make statements and get Taco to take up their case then great. We both agree that there are serious problems within our society and schools, we just differ with how to deal with them and which ones are the worst. A witch hunt with mud slinging is not what we want here, but feel free to send us those statements if Taco refuses to look into the matter.

As for girls 'turning', i find that terminology quite funny. At least we can hope for less teenage pregnancies. Are women treated with disrespect? Absolutely, we live in a society that has a thriving sex industry, men that think they must screw every week or it will drop off, and that having sex with a virgin cures aids. Same old wacky ignorant thinking that blames the gay parades for Hurricane Katrina and 911 in my opinion.

What am i to do?
Anonymous (not verified) | Fri, 2008-02-29 08:32

As you state above, they are deathly afraid of what will happen to them if they talk, its That serious... this is why i opted for this route.... Maybe i should advise them to do some Lorena Bobbet on his ass... and yes as per the below the main one is the English Teacher.....

Unknown if the above that you posted from the news article has any to do with this.

P.S. no it dont fall off but sure lacks excersize if not used frequently ;) LOL... doesnt mean pathetic people like this should fail the girls on purpose to get a piece of ass.

revealing the Truth
Anonymous (not verified) | Thu, 2008-02-28 16:15

I am glad someone finally is speaking of this. It is outrageous. I am a student there and If u see what goes on in there no one would believe. Break time teachers are to meet in the teachers lounge, however some male teachers stay in class, and then u see some girls go in and they close/lock the door. U can't see nothign because since the school was broken into the windows are sealed with Plywood. THey stay in there for hours. What goes on in there? I have a friend of mines that once was touched by English Teacher, once refused he got upset and threatend her grades. I told her go to the principal or her parents but at this point in time Who will they believe? I hope something is done about this.

What's Theo doing there?
A shoulder to cry on? An ear? Handing out Sarah's private phone number?
How thoughtful! He's so getting my vote next time, even if it was just for his awesome shades.
Have you noticed, he's getting grayer every day? Scheming is getting tougher.
No, but seriously. Shouldn't he be minding his own business? Like working on a better Environmental policy? Protecting the marine life? He's got something to compensate with that enormous pier... it's time for a pay back! And that is not just donating money, it's also making people aware of the fact that SXM is going down the slippery slope as far as the environment is concerned.
Or what about forcing every resort/hotel/whatever on the island to get a solar collector? That would make them a lot less dependent and environmentally conscious. Come on, you guys got sunshine 365 days a year! Use it!

(One line was edited, unless you can prove or lay out evidence of crimes then you can't really make statements someone is committing them. Of course, if you have that evidence we hope you'll share it. This is not censorship, it is moderation and I hate to do it, I hope you understand the reasons. - Flipper)
