Nova, Nazi's and the Today Rag

The Today Editorial today is a remarkable piece of work of sophistry for a newspaper which would have trouble investigating itself out of a paper bag. It is a rambling mess of irrational outrage at the news a NOVA TV crew is planning to come here and do some investigative reporting on the island about corruption. According to the Today, the perception that St. Maarten is corrupt is 'erroneous', 'ludicrous' and 'malicious'. It attacks any locals who are planning to talk to NOVA about corruption as being on par with Nazi sympathizers of the second world war in Holland who cooperated with the occupation.

The Today newspaper, and the Daily Herald, have played a major role leading SXM to the state it is in today, their pathetic standards of investigative journalism gives them no leg to stand on when another press organization decides to do so. The enemy here is not those who are brave enough to speak up and share information about the problems here, but those who would prefer to shut other people up and keep their heads stuck up their ass, believing they are smelling roses.

The Today to me is a pathetic rag erroneously using the label of newspaper.

NOVA part 3: corruption on SXM & Bonaire
Anonymous (not verified) | Sat, 2008-03-08 18:15

Mr. Leopold James was quite himself on NOVA :)
I applaud him for his courage and I wish more people had his 'cojones', as he puts it.
Anyway, they mentioned the whole election/vote-buying thing and frankly, the spokesman of the government said it was the truth and like Buncamper, he said that it was a common thing and that it happened everywhere.
Whatever... that doesn't justify anything.
So, I think NOVA didn't do much damage to SXM's reputation. It's bad publicity, but that'll pass. There's so much more to investigate...this was just old news.
In the mean time, let's help Theo solve the whole waste problem...Why doesn't he just visit SXM PE and make some notes? Our ideas make sense!

But then, so is comparing people who are wiling to discuss the problems that plague SXM with Dutch reporters as being like Nazi Collaborators in WWII and traitors is quite a strong statement too. Nothing like fear to shut people up eh? I'm sure one day the Today editorials will be kept as museum pieces, but not for the reasons they might hope.

Opinion and Commentary
Local Hero | Thu, 2008-02-28 13:00

A while back, the Today started a new section a few pages in titled Opinion and Commentary and I've been watching it closely, trying to figure out what it is. Very rarely does any item have a name and quite often the items are generally supportive of Today's views.

Now I realize that we here at SXM PE don't use our real names,t for the same reasons the writers of the Today's O & C page decline to, but we do use Writing Names or Aliases and I think this is an important point to make, because this enables the readers to build up a profile of the writer. This enables readers to make a better analysis of what has been written, for example, people know pretty well where I stand on many issues by my writing under the name Local Hero and you can challenge or question me on them directly here if you choose to. You can go back and see what I've written before, catch me in contradictions if I make them, Local Hero has a reputation, good with some people, not so good with others, hopefully a minority :).

My point is that I think the Today should give their regular O & C writers names, it doesn't have to be their real one. And if the item is written by Today staff, which I suspect many are, then it should say so.

Yesterday there was an item in the O & C section about Nova, it's hard to know what to make of it, it seems to come across as a kind of apology to Nova and Mirjam Bartlesman for the Editorial.

No smoke without fires? Shouldn't it be the Today investigating those smoke clouds to see if there are fires? And just how much is a lot? Sounds evasive to me. But then, how would the Today know the answer?

To be fair, Corruption is only one part of SXM's problems, the rest is made up by ancient and backward laws, or no laws at all, inept and incompetent management by certain politicians and public officials, leading to dysfunctional underfunded departments, short sighted vision and governmental transparency of a brick wall. Oh, and a dumbed down and intimidated 4th Estate.
