Not if but what. - SXM New Status

"Change is important, but not at all costs" and Change in (SXM) attitudes likely"

The headlines yesterday about Sarah's new attitude towards the Kingdom (Holland and Curacao in particular) put me in a blogging frame of mind. Someone beat me to it though, sort of, with this comment in Voodoo's previous post titled Vanity, Pride and Thin Skins. The writer is pretty much on target with my thoughts on the matter. There are a few things I want to add though, and because I think this story deserves a fresh blog page I will put them below here instead of in a comment there. I have also added links to related news on the Daily Herald website these past few days.

St. Maarten needs a New Status and to be free of Curacao, I fully support this and I think most people can agree with this point. The issue here is not whether St. Maarten will get New Status, but what form will it take. It's about vanity, pride and ego over rationality, practicality and wisdom.

It has nothing to do with whether I like Sarah or not, I have met her a few times and she seems nice enough, and as far as I am aware, she does not appear to be as 'sketchy' as others in her Exco. My opinion and criticisms of Sarah and her govt are mainly based upon their actions and policies, unfortunately for those who choose to become public figures and politicians, their character and personality becomes a legitimate part of the discussion too. It is also the part they least want you, the public to see.

I sometimes sympathize with Sarah, she has to work with the Exco she has, not the one she might wish for, to quote Donny Rumsfeld. We all know of rumbles of discontent within the DP, the party is shaky and bursting with ego and power hungry addicts, all it takes is one defection or independent to fall.

But at the same time I hold her accountable too. Government at all costs has been her guide these past year and Status Apart at all costs is her new one. We are led by people who have no interest in reforming the political and judicial systems on the island because it lessens their powers and opens them up to accountability. They blame Curacao for just about everything that isn't working or dysfunctional while neglecting the fact they have been part of the Federal Govt for most of the last few decades.

Let's recap shall we?

EWE still in limbo despite two IC resolutions to preserve and protect it.
Massive destruction and pollution to the island's environment, and by extension the health of it's people.
No plans for garbage and sewage, also detrimental to the people's health.
An overloaded infrastructure and a delusional perception of 'progress'.
No Monument List legislation to protect and preserve the SXM's heritage. A few statue don't count, sorry.
No Marine Ordinance, last we heard they wanted to hear from the Fishermen again, about a year ago.
No Animal Protection Legislation, just talk and meetings, year after year. Blah Blah Blah.
No responsibility for its abused and orphaned children. Seriously folks, how long has this been going on now?
Little or no transparency or accountability, in or for anything.
A Code of Conduct that has been gathering dust. for 6 years.
No thought for climate change. Who better to have as friends when the sea level rises?
No thought for cleaner energies or energy conservation, the island is totally dependent upon oil, which extends to water and it's economic future. Not to mention food, we grow nothing.
A tourism policy centered on an American market at a time when their economy is under a big threat and failing to recognize the appeal of the Caribbean to Europeans, not only financially.
An overloaded, underfunded education system, which when connected with a similarly dysfunctional social system and poorly managed immigration and labor systems, leaves the youth of the island with little incentive or hope for a prosperous future in their own land.
A border point in ruins, a fish market / retail plaza with no tenants and a very expensive playground at Capt Hodges that has never opened. The VKS station planned there is also still nonexistent 3 months into the season.
St. Maarten robbed of owning it's own water plant, (watch and see, I wouldn't be surprised if Barendsen sells up in the not so distant future and makes a nice big profit.)

I could go on, further back to Fort Amsterdam, The Airport case, the decision to put a garbage dump in the middle of the salt pond, but I think you catch my drift. The point is, that while I wish St. Maarten had some inspirational leaders with integrity and vision, the truth is different. I do not have any faith of belief that the crowd running the place now can manage a country, let alone fix the problems it has, many they created, either by their actions and their genuine or false ignorance.

What cost is Sarah unwilling to pay for Status Apart? What cost is she willing to pay for it? Are the Dutch asking too much? Are they asking for something that the majority of people here want or not? Do you want change, reform and a fresh start? If the political / electoral system is not reformed, if transparency and accountability not enforced, if the justice and police systems don't get strengthened, then I have to say the future does not look fresh to me. It will be the same story in a different wrapper.

Change is worth the cost if the cost is corruption, cronyism, nepotism and fear in exchange for transparency, accountability and freedom of expression. Writers of this site cannot be open with their identity and many others are afraid to comment, even anonymously. This fear anhas to be confronted and the only way it will happen is if we have an open and transparent government.

Theo says that we can do it ourselves. I think I've already laid out the basic arguments against this point of view. His and Sarah's message is disingenuous and that is being polite. The DP Party logo sort of makes sense to me now, giving light so people will move on, sort of like moths, blinded and confused and getting burnt.

Status apart is not in question, it's going to happen. The question is, and it's one everybody who cares about this island and their family's future should be asking. What shape is it going to take? Do you want a fresh start or not?

I also think it's time for a new referendum on new status. it should include independence at one end and joining the BES islands in becoming a province at the other, with a few in between. I am growing tired of the xenophobic and nationalist hyperbole they hide their ego and power hungry agenda behind.

Times are changing Theo, the people want it, or at least most of those I know do, and you , Sarah, Roy and others should get used to it and accept instead of the struggling and resistance to it. Your good friend Lt. Governor Richards has said it too, its time for the so called leaders of this island to grow up and mature. Sadly, I don't think any of them capable of that.

OPEN LETTER TO
Prime-minister BALKENENDE

Thanks on behalf of native-indigenous St. Martin people- and other law-abiding citizens.

It hit the island like a bomb…
Many are still in a state of shock- and denial….
Some are seeing their dreams of becoming the ‘Friendly-island’s first this-, and first that- going up in flames, perhaps beyond ‘repairs’….
But then again-, for others- if not for most St. Martiners-, and Antilleans, it was a long hoped for- and awaited deliverance from the ‘clutches’ of power-struck village politicians…….
The speech of ‘Jan-Peter’, as he is called in Holland.
For those who are ignorant of who this person is.
Prof. mr. dr. Jan-Peter BALKENENDE, Prime-minister of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
The irony of it all ?
Our organization has said it over- and repeatedly-, but then who are we in the eyes of our ‘leaders’ ?
This time around-, it came directly from the ‘horse’s mouth’.
From none other than ‘Jan-Peter’, Prime-minister of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, the Kingdom, our leaders so desperately want to become a ‘country’ in.
Well of course-, ‘Jan -Peter’ did not rule that out in his speech-, held very symbolically in the court-house (oftentimes a ‘pit-stop’ destination ‘Pointe Blanche) of the ‘Friendly island’.
However, in his words ‘To be frank, we are not there yet. We still have a long way to go to achieve this ideal’
To put it bluntly-, ‘country status St. Maarten’ or-, the ‘Brave New World’-, to quote our local ‘award-winning-talk show-host, will not be achieved come December 15, 2008- and perhaps not even ‘come a long time’.
Of course-, there are those, who now come out of the ‘woodwork-‘ and speak of disgrace-, of neo-colonial White rule using biblical references- and the like.
May they are right- which most probably is the case.
But who brought it upon us ?
Who is reacting- rather that pro-acting ?
Who did not see it all coming ?
What options- opportunities did we de facto leave the ‘Dutch’ ?
For sure we can not- and will not blame them….
After all-, more than any other organization-, we have constantly pressured the Dutch- to do what was responsible- logical- and ethical…not necessarily nice- or not necessarily popular, in order to clean up the ‘mess’ (puinhoop) the ‘Friendly island’ is in.
NO ‘new status’ for the ‘Friendly island’ without pre-conditions was our constant call- and urge.
Conditions- that in fact would be aimed at securing in general democratic rule, including transparent- and accountable Governance…….
Conditions that would secure the very existence of we-, the native-indigenous St. Martin people ( which many people had already declared ‘it was too late’)……
Conditions that would create a dynamic- and harmonious balance between the socio-economical interests between all stakeholders……..
Remember our ‘mantra’ to Government for considering our proposal for a ‘MARSHALL PLAN or any other similar concept to ensure ‘balance’ ?.............
Remember the arrogance of our present Government towards our pleas-, and towards the cries of the native-indigenous St. Martiners ?................
Remember also-, a millionaire ‘commish’, publicly wondering ‘ Who is a St. Martiner ?.....
Remember statements coming from certain DP-Commissioners- that ‘we are in power now-, if you do not like what we do, try to get elected’ ? (= buy your election-victory)….
So, what is this so-called ‘outcry’ about now (at least among those who have reason to be concerned )?......
We for sure- and for the record-, hereby openly commend- and thank the Dutch Prime-minister dr. BALKENDE for coming to the rescue of the ‘Friendly island’.
Those who have good intentions- ideas- qualifications- genuine respect for this island- and its native people-, as well as having other constructive skills necessary for this island, have nothing to fear.
On the contrary-, and while in Great Bay’s ‘White house-, there might be a ‘wake’ going on in preparation for the ‘burial’ of the ‘December 15 still born infant’-, there might be also a cause to celebrate.
This is because of the truly wonderful opportunities-, now available.
Just read very carefully-, the magnificent speech of dr. Jan-Peter BALKENDE; it contains the ‘recipe- and the conditions necessary for making a new-, but this time very healthy- new baby ‘country’.
We will quote two statements of his historical speech.; ’It was not just about formal responsibility ;it was also about moral responsibility’.
The next one being; ‘That’s why I am making an urgent appeal to everyone in St. Maarten to take up the challenge……’
Ending on this note, let it be recorded for the ‘umpteenth’ time to our leaders-, that our organization is prepared- willing and committed to make its contribution, in order that in due time, the island- and its people can really be ready for a new constitutional status.
Also- if by now it is not clear that we are a stakeholder in this process-, representing the native-indigenous people of this island-, then for sure you- as Government will continue to be the one-, who are giving the Dutch the opportunity- and justification on a silver platter to re-colonize the ‘Friendly-island’.
Remember that there is never a cause without any effect….and that there is never an effect that was not caused’.
Have a nice day.

Not at all cost?
Anonymous (not verified) | Sat, 2008-02-16 04:12

Sara says that change is important but not at all cost. What cost is she talking about? Anybody to explain that one.

for public consumption
Anonymous (not verified) | Sat, 2008-02-16 11:19

All this talk of independence, autonomy and the chest thumping is strictly for public consumption. The ruling clan cannot be perceived to be too willing to accept the hand and the conditions that are being offered. That would be an indictment of the policies of the last 20 years and of themselves.
The perception must be that they negotiated on their own terms when in reality there is very little to be negotiated.

How will St. Maarten ever get it right, Sarah wonders?

How will St. Maarten ever get it right, Sarah wonders in TDH of February 14?
Well it is not that hard. If even Balkenende has noticed that our society is invested with corruption and crime than she must have noticed too. And of course she did. Politically she is responsible for our troubled society. She has been "leading" the local government for years and the party has participated in most Antillean Governments of the past decades. Wide scale corruption does not happen overnight but yet they allowed the derailment of our society with a steady pace; further and further into the miserable depths where we now flounder to stay alive. She didn't stop it. She didn't even try. She conveniently ignored it; probably even benefited from it. That is the picture PM Balkenende has showed her. How do you get that right ? As another writer put it: They will not stop their own Carnival. Them revelers shouldn't be surprised if somebody else does. Balkenende may be doing just that.

Oh so sweet St Maarten Land...
Anonymous (not verified) | Sat, 2008-02-16 12:15

Balkenende only repeated tactfully and without sensationalism what Brinkman said. Thank God he cleared that up. Sarah Wescott-Williams is a good person but we are talking about country management. The magnificient "cincu" in the IC has brought us to where we are and someone ought to read them their rights.
Moreover the Dutch is catching up on St Maarten for all the money they pumped into this island for nothing, yes because we have NOTHING.
Infrastructure: Horrible
Garbage: Overflowing all over.
Sewage: Disgusting
Schools: Overcrowded classrooms
Youth: No assistance anywhere
On and on and on... with no end in sight.
What do we have to show they can take us as leaders into anything else but destruction?
We need to break away from Curacao? We should try breaking away from our own leaders for a change.
We need a new referendum, in December 2008 the date set for separate status and make that change.

He claims they are a matter of public record. Can some one please point the way to these records. I can't find them on his website.

As far as I can google, it's
Beccy18 | Sat, 2008-02-16 11:27

As far as I can google, it's not on the Internet at all.
So what we are missing here is a reliable system based on checks and balances.
And what's up with the new governement building? There seems to be only one word for that. Maybe it's: Megalomania ?!
Let me give you another example: Balkenende lives in semi-detached house and where can I find the homes of the SXM commissioners? That's right, something a little bigger...

And SXM wants to be Independent? Excusez-moi, mais c'est vraiment impossible avec ces cinq personnes.

Thumbs up
Beccy18 | Fri, 2008-02-15 16:43

Hay, why doesn't the government just get the garbage from the Salt pond shipped of. I heard Puerto Rico offers that. It'll be a nice start.
It's time for some responsible acting, Sarah!
Yes, you can!

One thing though, are you saying that some people on this forum are actually scared of Theo hunting them down if he finds out they're not writing positive things about him?
How ruthlessly absurd!

But if he does... let's have group plastic surgery, so we can benefit from the discount :) Awesome. Dixi.

Unfortunately it's true
Flipper | Fri, 2008-02-15 17:12

You can suffer for being too vocal or visible a critic, you can lose business and bring troubles down on yourself. Let's be honest, some of the things written about here expose them and their actions to scrutiny and criticism And then theres the big money, the developers and investors who have been featured or exposed on here for their disregard for the environment.
It is well known that many members of our local press have had their integrity and objectivity tarnished by their associations and flattery to be sure of getting permit renewals. If you make yourself troublesome by asking hard hitting questions then the doors soon close, and as a journalist this can make the job quite difficult. Fear is very much a part of the St. Maarten society, rational or not, I think in many cases it is.

Nice post Hady

about that expensive play ground
Anonymous (not verified) | Fri, 2008-02-15 19:15

Great Post Hady, I have wondered about that expensive play ground, was up wid dat?
Maybe it is a show piece? I happen to think it is too pretty to have the kids destroy and maybe it needs a security guard to moniter the size of the children playing on this pretty piece of work.
Looking at it, it seems as if it is not strong enough for the roughies.
Since the new coffee shop opened next door, I have been looking at it a few times and wondering if Theo is waiting for something special to open this pirate play ground.
Has anyone else noticed that quite a few establishments on the boardwalk sport the pirate flag and pirate logo and name-? says something about the island doesn't it?
Concerning the Soualiga Patrol that was supposed to be head quartered at an office located on Captain Hodge Pier, word has it that the Soualiga Patrol will now be part of the control unit. Does anyone know how this will function? will the control unit be patrolling Philipsburg ? how exactly does this affect the Soualiga Patrol? and will their office ever be open at the pier? I happen to think the Soualiga Patrol is very much needed on the Boardwalk and the rest of Philipsburg, with all the robberies happening to shop owners and visitors and residents alike, the feeling of protection and safety is neccessary.
