Holiday Released, Still Remains a Suspect----Investigations Continues--Stein - 7th February 2008

Pointe Blanche: --- Former Commissioner of Police Derrick Holiday who was arrested on Tuesday on suspicion of forging immigration documents has been released from police custody around 6:30pm confirmed chief prosecutor Taco Stein. Stein said that Holiday was taken to his home by the police and that he cooperated very well with the investigators. The island Chief Prosecutor said that Holiday still remains a suspect and the investigation will continue. However, there is no reason to keep the former top cop behind bars as they proceed with the investigation. Asked where Holiday was kept during his time in detention at the Pointe Blanche Prison Stein said he was held in the sick bay and was not allowed to be in contact with anyone except the prison guards and lawyer.

Federal detectives from Curacao is on St. Maarten conducting an investigation into the immigration chain, during this investigation which has been ongoing over the past months revealed Holiday as a suspect into the illegal corruption. Stein did not say if they have enough evidence to substantiate their suspicion but said that they will proceed with the investigations. Holiday was arrested early Tuesday morning at his Oyster Pond home by Federal Detectives, also accompanying the officers to Holiday’s home was lead prosecutor Martin Hemelaar and a local judge. His arrest sent shock waives in the community as one of the commissioner of police was arrested on June 19 and ultimately was convicted to four years in prison on November 20 for forging a number of reentry permits, fraud and money laundering.
