Vance's TIPS TO YOUNG POLITICIANS

by Terry J. Peterson

Letter from Vance James Jr.
February 20, 2007

Dear Terry,

Thanks for the invitation extended to stand with you at your political launching and public introduction. It would have been a great opportunity to show my commitment to the youth and the future of our nation. But, unfortunately I will be away in California USA where I will be attending the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development Educational Conference and won't be home until March 21. Congratulations on the major step you have taken. It is heartening when young people take what is not an easy step. I can offer advise to you and am pleased to do so. In response to your questions I attached some tips. I wish you every success and if you so desire, would be happy to preview your speech and give comments.
Every success. Honored to have been asked.

Sincerely,
Vance James

TIPS FOR YOUNG POLITICIANS: YOU HAVE DECIDED FOR PUBLIC SERVICE!

____________________________________________________________

Making the decision to enter politics means you have decided for public service!
Public service means serving the entire public whether they vote for you or not !
Here are SOME TIPS as you enter public service:

1. No one knows you better than you. Is there anything in your background that
could be a source of embarrassment? If it can be it may likely be, so face it head
on. After determining what it is, prepare to answer any questions that may
arise. Be honest with yourself first and always and the rest is easy.
There is nothing like the truth.

2. Determine why you have decided for public service!
Prepare to answer the question if and when asked.
It must never be a cocky answer such as because I think I can do it !
It certainly must never be so that I can get ahead ! Remember it is called
Public service.

3. Avoid when asked questions replying “ I think”. We all do that it would be
Better to say “ My belief is and explain”

4. One of the first lessons to learn when questions are asked.
Always look the person or the camera in the eye. You must have nothing
to be ashamed of! Eye contact is very important.
When asked a question, answer fist explain your answer next !
i.e. do you believe St Maarten an be a country within the Kingdom?
Yes I believe that, it is for us to prove others wrong and to justify our
Decision.

5. Read, read, read…….information and news. You do not have to re-invent the
wheel, there is so much information at your fingertips. You must read and
understand and put things in the right context.
Do not sound like a walking encyclopedia.
Remember a planted question will trip you up.

6. Public service does not mean you must know everything, it calls for you
know a little about everything and to be specialized in some things.

7. Establish the principles by which you will function and stick to them and
Live them, even when it appears impossible.

8. Ensure you have the support of your family. Voters will always think
If they don’t trust you enough to support you, Why should I?

9. Economic independence is crucial for political survival.
An economic independent person’s voice stands stronger.
Avoid mixing personal finances with your political finances.

10. Avoid making promises you know you cannot keep.
Offer to look into the matter and above always return calls and
Keep promises made.

11. Once you have announced you are seeking public office, you will
Be sought out by many, each for his/her own reason.

12. Remember from this moment on, whatever you say and even not say
Will be looked at, analyzed and judged.
The public will see you as theirs and you will no longer be your own.

13. Study up on all about the office you are seeking!

14. Off the record is to be used, when you do not want the press to quote
you as its source, while providing them information.

15. You cannot get into office on your own. Be a team player within
The party, DO NOT BE A BLIND PARTY FOLLOWER.

Wirter's Note: On December 25, 2007 we had breakfast together at the Vlaun's Residence (The White House) on Front Street. We talked about many things: His Christmas and New year's sermon, youth, environment, education, politics and life in general. Many attended his annual open house luncheon at his home thereafter. Many did not know it would be his last. He was truly a great mentor!

Rest in Peace Comrade Vance,
Terry J. Peterson

I am very happy that you posted this letter. For as long as I can remember, I have always been intrigued by policy, history, and economics. I was fortunate enough to receive an education in Tallahassee with the help of the island government scholarship. Although I am currently pursuing and establishing a career in Tallahassee, I have been thinking of ways to be able to contribute to St. Maarten from afar. This letter has given me an idea to work from.

Additionally, I'd like to comment on the black/white/American issue. I am not black, however I was born and raised on St. Maarten, as well as my mother. It is disheartening to learn that this black/white issue has resonated in the minds of St. Maarteners. Although I have learned so much about American culture, I will never begin to understand the mindset of black Americans and white Americans and where they stand on the "race" issue.

I fear the biggest problem is the american media that St. Maarteners watch on a daily basis begin to learn things like the n-word. Growing up my friends and I never used that word, because it does not have the same history on sxm that it has in the U.S. Just the other day my friend (not black) told me that another girl (black) told their mutual guy friend (Black) that all the white girls were taking up all the good looking black guys. How ridiculous is that on St. Maarten? We are only 36 sq miles big and yet people care about a certain type of man or woman being taken by someone of a different race? It is too small to be worrying about that crap. I am disappointed by these stories because whenever I struggle with cultural differences, etc up here I think of home and now I'm scared when I do come home I have to put up with the same crap.

NO race issue here!

I think black people around the world are just proud to see a person like Obama who can inspire and motivate the American people, and maybe the whole world for CHANGE. So, again it has nothing to do with sxm, and race!!

"They siad this day will never come". But today January 3rd 2008, OBAMA BARACK has made history for all people in the world. Like he siad in his speech tonight with hope we will / shall overcome the obstacles in our way. And believe me this man is going to make a change in America and in the whole world, because he has a vision from HIGHER GROUNDS (MOUNT ZION )(A)! He know where he came from, and definitly know's where he is heading! If you listing carefully to his speeches, you can hear the POWERFUL VOICES of MARTIN LUTHER KING and MY HERO NELSON MANDELA. These are the people that were choosen to bring peace, love and unity to all.

I hope not

And let me be clear first by saying it has nothing to do with color, but his policies and positions. If being black is the only qualification and the distinction of being the first black president is all that matters then it's sad. Obama is not much different from the other establishment candidates, personally I think Edwards offers the best option for a change and the World and US needs it desperately.
This is not to say that Obama is a bad man or no good, just that I think Edwards would make a far better president, turn back the tables somewhat on big corporations and be more beneficial to the 'small man'. Yes, Obama has powerful speeches, so does Edwards and Clinton, but lets keep in mind thats what they are, speeches written, mostly by other people, well ahead of time, similar to propaganda.

I wish Gore had run myself, but any Dem looks like they would be better than what we have now, and the Reps running ALL look like sketchy, unstable and scary to me, worse than....

Flipper, it has nothing to do with the color of his skin! Yes, I am proud he is a blackman, because there people that think that a blackman will never become president of the United States (we are qualified enough). But there wrong, this year 2008 there will be a black president of the United States! In this election there is NO candidate that can match with Obama. You were referring to Edward, when mostly white American people are thirsting for a President like Obama. Further these are intelligent, capable and inspirational people (BArack & Michelle) who are capable to write there own speeches, not Bush..... . So, again it has nothing to do with the color of his skin. The message is clear the American people wont a president that can help change America, but also help change the world to a better place.

Flipper please lets be openen minded!! The WORLD has CHANGED, we are living in the year 2008, and not 1808!

Black?

Obama's mother is white and his father is black, so that makes him????

please, dont make color an issue!
Anonymous (not verified) | Sat, 2008-01-05 20:24

That makes hem to be black! Do you know WHY??

I agree, color is not anissue and should not enter into the equation.

ofwhite or offblack

Zebra is also possible-and so what? race is way too much of an issue in the United States. Caribbean people laugh at the ridiculous race statements in the US, as our people are so racially mixed up. Then I hear those saying that Obama is not really a real black American because his father is African and they did not experience slavery......people will say anything.
My favorite is H.Clinton, only because she is smarter and people long to see her husband in a diplomatic position to smooth the Iraq/Iran/ war and tension and to keep a close watch on Pakistan and China.

Yes, But

The Iowa caucus victory was nice yes, but if you know anything about American politics you would know that a victory here is merely a momentum gainer, nothing else. Just ask Howard Dean. Lets wait to see how he does in New Hampshire.

Iowa victory was just the start, look what he is going to do in the other states. He will landslide them by miles, and make history!

SO HOW IT WAS IN THE BEGINNING, IT SHALL BE IN THE END!!
