Why you have no water. - The DH explains.

Thanks to the Daily Herald, we now know why we have a water shortage.

The island’s water shortage could be traced to a power outage that shut down the water production plant for several hours in November. Nearly empty water tanks were drained by residents in that period and when the plant became operational again the demand for water was so great there was no surplus to be pumped into the tanks. Compounding the problem was little or no rainfall in November that led to dry cisterns.

And there was I thinking it was because of mismangement and poor planning by Roy and our govt. Silly me.

It is my understanding that Aqua Design had no long term contract with govt to supply water and it´s because they couldn´t get one that they decided to close down their plant. Now Roy tells us it may be kept as standby. I guess it was too much to ask him how this will happen. Will GEBE buy the plant or will Air-Fin? Under what terms?

Dammit, I forget, we the public are not entitled to know these things and Roy doesn´t like to be asked questions. Silly me again.

Thank you Hady for this blog, I thought it was only me that was dumbfounded by such a stupid report in the Daily Herald.
The reporters are just copying what Roy Marlin says in his weekly served up bullshit to the press EXCO briefings.
SMN news had a great report some time ago on the problems with GEBE, Aquadesign and Airfin. A water plant was found at the Cupecoy Village supplying water to La Samanna which is located on the French side, did you miss this report Hady? Roy says he has heard about it but does not know much.
So, many communities suffering from low water pressure, many go without water for days only to find out we have a water plant pumping water over to the French side.
We also have to be explained how the high price of buying water from French SXM will affect us the consumer, Roy says it will not.... so does he expect GEBE to absorb this cost without passing it on to the consumer?
From several reports this has already reached the 1 million dollars this year already. Roy Marlin originally said that Air Fin would be ready by December, now we are hearing that Air Fin is nowhere near being ready as the location chosen in the Lowlands is not the ideal location to set up such a plant to feed the rest of the Dutch side.
GEBE people are saying it is difficult to set pipes and infrastructure in place from this location. Reports are that Willem Barendson will use this location as he received it for free or at a very low cost.
The IWACO report clearly states that a new plant should have been built in Point Blanche, something that Government and Roy Marlin does not care about as they don't follow guidlines from reports and advice made for government anyways.
Make one wonder why they commission reports in the first place and why the Dutch Government pays to have reports made if they know that the local government will not follow advice given to them.
Roy Marlins speech about Aqua Design supplying the small amount of water as it will provide Air Fin with a breathing space in January, makes me wonder if Air Fin will be ready in January as well.
Everyone knows that the construction sector goes on vacation during the Christmas holidays and I would think that the contractors and sub contractors who are working on the supply infrastructure from the Lowlands to the rest of the Dutch side will be off on vacation as well.

Water Shortage

The reason we have little or no water is because Government needs to control other areas such as allowing private citizens to set their garbage and brush afire in residential areas. You are asking why I'm making his point I suppose?? Because then the other residents (not the person burning the fire, cause I guess they like their house smelling of smoke) have to wash everything in their house to get rid of the scent!! Some of these fires burn all day long, can you imagine! Most of the time they start them when your are not even home to close the windows etc. Government also needs to look into these water leakages that are caused when the water pressure does return to such an extent the pipes burst and these leakages go unchecked for days, even when our friends at GEBE are called (if you can get through to them, because as you know, they put the phone off the hook when they're tired of hearing from us customers). Just thought I would voice a little bit of my frustration...

Water Shortage II

I agree many of people set the fires, but Government seems to be the major problem with all this shit. They make laws, sometimes they don't and then they are never enforced. There is no way that we will get separate status when our Leader of Government comes out in the newspaper and few months back stating that we cannot afford garbage pickup How in the world could we be self sustaining when she couldn't even answer the little boy as to why he had no water. Their appears to be only one set of rules and that is their regardless of their conflicts of interests, they keep it within the DP only, the only way Sint Marten is going to have a bright future is to rid of the current Government and start a new., the N.A. couldn't even fix the problems. Perhaps the Dutch should run Government for a trial period and set up a fair election standard (one without Camera phones in the voting booths and put an end to paying for votes). We all know it happens, but no one pursues it. I really don't know what the solution is, it seems as though all Government Leaders are power hungry, as per Christine Amanpour's documentary on Czar Putin (President Vladimir Putin on Russia that aired last night). It puts a whole new light as to where we are all heading towards. (DISASTER)

How stupid do they think we are. We use reverse osmosis and upon looking upon the Internet, water osmosis is taking the salt water from the Ocean (and we have plenty of it around us) and desalting it and purifying it into drinking water. So now what excuse will they use? Does anyone really believe that report supplied to the Dail Herald?

YOU'RE RIGHT

Roy Marlin lying again?
Anonymous (not verified) | Wed, 2007-12-19 09:46

I listened to the IC budget debate yesterday and I heard Commissioner of Finance Roy Marlin who in his last job was Commissioner of Environment say that Air Fin water plant was never supposed to supply water over the hill.
This was in response to a IC member asking questions if Air Fin water plant can pump water over the hill to supply water to GEBE consumers in the Philipsburg-Cule Sac-Middle Region areas.
Commissioner of Finance and Energy and the same Commissioner who made a mess of the environment in his previous portfolio responded saying Air Fin water plant is to supply water to the Western areas of the island, read Lowlands and Enverserve will continue with supplying water to the consumers over the hill.
I had never heard of this before, I was under the impression that the Enerserve contract was not going to be renuwed because Air Fin water plant was the new kid on the block and taking over-with a handsome kick back to our Commissioner of Energy.
The Commissioner also responded to one of the IC members that they should not allude to some hanky panky taking place in his portfolio-I had to laugh, Dear Commissioner we know that hanky panky is taking place all the time. Watching this IC budget debate yesterday made one laugh and cry, the opposition does not do their homework and the EXCO lies through their teeth. I feel we are short changed by these fools in Government.

Please read smn news today. according to SMN news GEBE is not ready with installing pipes and technicians are on vacation. Thus Air Fin will not be ready for the end of the year as the Commissioner would like everyone to know.
Plus, Air Fin will get paid wether ready or not, it is in their contract.
