Water Woes

I know that the writers of this site hit on Roy a fair bit, but let´s face it, he deserves it. It´s been two years since he announced that companies were being sought to increase supply and it still hasn´t happened. Roy and the Exco decided in May to give the contract to Air-Fin to build a new plant in the Lowlands and at the same time denigrated GEBE by stating they are not capable of the job despite thier wishes to do so.
Roy´s excuses about the current shortage being the result of Aquadesign closing it plant and the start of the tourist season is laughable, if only having no water was a laughing matter. As always, and I stress that this is my opinion, Roy is again spinning and casting a smoke screen to mask his incompetance and mismangement of our water supplies.

Time will tell if the new plant in lowlands will make much difference, the problems are not only with production but also with storage. As shown in this blog post back in May, the island has only 1.5 days reserve (questionable) when experts recommend 3 days minimum.

Accountability is rare in SXM, no doubt there are some who will leap to defend this man, but I for one hold him fully accountable. Not only for our water shortage, but also for our full garbage dump (no solution yet!), our lack of a comprehensive sewage system (no plans yet!) and the rapid over development of our island resulting in the destruction of our environment and the overburdening of our infrastructure.

Next elections I plan to remind people of all this, but I don´t expect is will change much, Roy got his seat with about 3% of the votes and he will not be held accountable, Sadly.

I have said it before and I will say it again and again, Roy is incompetant and he has been a disaster at everything he has been put in charge of. He has cost the island well over a million dollars with his handling of GEBE and water, he has screwed our environment with his over development, lack of sewage and waste processing and he is now going to do the same with finances.

I will also add that our opposition are also incompetant, they are given so much yet they do nothing with it. Where is Frans, William and those other jokers? When was the last time you heard anything from any of them? George is the only one who speaks up now and then and although he tries, he is hardly impressive.

Poor SXM if this is the best we have to run our business.

How interesting

From SXM News Network.

Philipsburg:--- Residents of St. Maarten may have to brace themselves for longer periods of water shortage as one of GEBE water supplier has notified the company that they would no longer be able to supply them with water as of yesterday.

SMN News have been reliably informed that Aqua Design who have been supplying 1000 cubic meters of water a day to GEBE since 2005 still does not have a contract with the main water utility company.

The source said that Aqua Design has an agreement to pick up a check on a daily basis for the amount of water sold to GEBE daily. Secondly, Aqua Design sells it water to GEBE for less than $3.00 per cubic meter, while GEBE is paying the French side company Union Caraibes de Desallement d’ Eau de Mer (UCDEM) some 6 euros per cubic meter. Already GEBE paid over one million euros to the French side company for water used this year, which is for a ten month period.

According to the information reaching SMN News is that Aqua Design either wants to increase its price and to secure a definite contract with GEBE because the company is not able to secure loans to invest in its company. The well place source said that residents of St. Maarten would have to prepare for heavier water shortage if the GEBE cannot strike a deal with Aqua Design, that deal would be that GEBE would have to give the water supplier a contract as well as more money since they are able to pay the UCDEM 6 euros per cubic meter of water.

While GEBE is busy installing the necessary pipes in Cupe-Coy area for Airfin the company that was awarded the Government contract for water production, workers of GEBE made an amazing discovery of a water plant that is producing 500 cubic meter of water per day and is pumping it to La Samana Hotel. La Samana owners Orient Express is busy with construction of another sister company called Cupe Coy Village. So far no one knows who the owner of the smaller water plant is while management of GEBE is still at loss that water is produced on the Dutch side and pumped to the French side while the Dutch side has to buy water from the French side for more than double the price they are paying Aqua Design.

What is not clear is if French authorities are aware of the smaller plant located on the Dutch side and sending its water to the French side. Another question that raises eyebrows if the water that is pumped to La Samana meets the necessary requirements as it pertains to French laws. SMN News also understands that Airfin will be taking over this small water plant whenever they commence operation.

SMN News tried contacting the Managing Director of GEBE William Brooks for a comment but he could not be reached up to press time.

Another lie

Roy ´Pinochio´ Marlin´s statement that the cost of purchasing water from the French side will not be passed on to consumers is yet another lie. GEBE will be paying the cost and as a public company it means that at the end of the day, money is being paid from public funds. According to inside sources, water purchases from the French side have cost GEBE almost $1 million this year.

We went through the hurricane season with this situation, in effect putting the population of the island at very serious risk. As we all know, the intakes of the water plant nearly always need to be shut down due to water disturbance and silting. Imagine if we had had a major storm, the massive clearing of Indigo Bay would have caused immense amounts of silt pollution into the sea which would have spread down the coast to Cay Bay.

Water woes to lessen today with French side assistance - 29th November 2007

As for the shortage in reserve capacity, SXM PE revealed this situation back in May and it is only now that the DH mentions it. Shortsighted is the best they can come up with to describe this situation? Pathetic.

EXCO & water
Anonymous (not verified) | Fri, 2007-11-30 00:31

I think the entire Executive Council is to blame for our water issues. afterall, the entire EXCO signed and endorsed the new water contract with AIR FIN. Blame should also be caste on the board of directors, their role is to supervise the company GEBE. When I pay for water, my check is made out to GEBE not Enerserve or AIR FIN. I undertsand that GEBE distributes the water.
What if the outgoing company decide to slow down even more and start maintianing their equipment, then we have a serious problem. According to reports, there's not enough in reserve to carry the island for 3 days.

Where's the water tank, which is suppose to be built in the MAdame Estate area?
Why is GEBE not making water themselves. They could do it. With the new technical equipment available in reverseosmosis, I'm sure GEBE could handle the job. THe workers of GEBE are the ones who are working in the current plant operated by Enerserve anyway.
Mr bardensen is a genuis: He made enerserve, sold it and then a couple years after he came back with a new company called AIR FIN. The government got out of the contract with enerserev and hire Mr Bardenson again with a spanking new water company AIRFIN.
I wish him the best and hope he can provide quality water on a consistant basis.

Brooks is a wimp
Flipper | Fri, 2007-11-30 06:10

Brooks is a pawn of the Exco and Roy, instead of defending GEBE´s option to run and within a few years OWN the water plant in Cay Bay, he wimped out and put his tail between his legs. He also approved the purchase of the new oil generators indicating that he has no clue about the global energy situation and climate change.

It is my understanding that it is the EXCO that is responsible for investing in the distribution network, they must authorise and provide funds to GEBE for this.

In response to another comment on the Budget thread, it is also my understanding that Aquadesign had no contract with the govt. The contract with Enerserve was terminated yet they still run the plant (with GEBE employees) and negotiations are still ongoing about how much they will be paid to move out.

The contract with Air-Fin has not been made available to the public or the Island Council. George keeps asking for it and Roy keeps saying that it is the terms that needed to be bought before the IC and not the actual contract. Would someone please explain the logic to this? A contract contains the terms of a deal doesn´t it?? Doesn´t the public have a right to know what the deal is??

Roy ihas proved himself to be a liar several times, he is good at one thing only and that is spinning and creating smoke to cover up his incompetance and sketchy shady decisions. The EXCO and Sarah hold the same blame for the island´s situation with water, waste and pressured infrastructer, they enable this man because if they didn´tthey would be the opposition.

"who will provide the grand design ?
What is yours and what is mine ?
'Cause there is no more frontier
We have got to make it here

We satisfy our endless needs and
justify our bloody deeds,
in the name of destiny and the name
of God

And you can see them there,
On Sunday morning
They stand up and sing about
what it's like up there
They call it paradise
I don't know why
You call it paradise, kiss it goodbye

When the leader of the DP party and commissioner of constitutional affairs, tells alittle boy, who asked why there's no water in his area, the good Commissioner replied that she has the same questions, and that she too would have inquire from the water company what's happening. Where are we going??? THe commissioner could have produce a much better answer to the little boy's question. She's never at a lost for words. Most of the time ,she has too many words and we loose what she's trying to say on a simple subject . The little boy should have ask the good commissioner if she is still in the executive council .

As leader of her party with the majority in the island council, Mrs wescott Williams should get a handle on the situation very quick. The locals and residents are fed up.
A couple of the hotels on the island had flooded rooms lately, becuase the guests wanted to take a shower, no water. Many of them forgot to turn off the facets and when the water returned you had rivers running from hotel rooms.

Why can't we demand that our elected officials, because they received that mandate to continue governing this island, that they review the develpment plans, take a step back and see what the country really needs to continue in terms of urban and infrastructure. It's time to institute a moritorium on all large bulding projects until we as a people or a government can produce a viable long term plan for the country and its people. Pullout the Tour Map and Multi anual policy plans which have projections and expert advice.

All these plans are gathering dust in the new archive wing.
No wonder the Dutch are telling us we are not ready for more repsonsibility in our new country status dream. We're not ready!!!!!

Shame!

Shame on Sarah and the whole DP party. Again, if they can't get the job done then step out of Government, instead of lying to the people when you all are (DP) just a waste of time. DP party just have a WHOLE set of DOMMIES!!!!!!
