Senior Citizens Rot For Free!

The only persons who will benefit from the government’s ill-conceived Bus Fare Hike are the ones who own the bus licenses, bus permits and the buses----- and they are certainly not the bus drivers.

Bus drivers are not responsible for senior citizens, the country is. As such, it would have been more acceptable if government had used some of the monies they have been squandering to increase the old age pension or to give the elderly a paid-for pass that allows them to ride on all the buses. The SVB card for seniors will not work as a pass, simply because the bus drivers are not getting anything from it, and it is a waste of time.

On the road it is a dog eat dog thing. Bus drivers overtake their colleagues anywhere in order to get their buses filled. Some stop in the middle of the road to keep other buses from passing them. Most are help drivers that do not speak English.
Yesterday, I rode on two buses to two different directions just to see the behavior of bus driver since the hike. On the route to Mullet Bay, a bus driver just pretended that he did not see the elderly woman waving her umbrella and headed for the two teachers lower down. On the route to St. Peters, the bus diver told the Grandfather and his grandchild to take the other bus. It was Louis Laveist who told us, “DO NOT CHALLENGE THE BUS DRIVERS!”

If you normally carry your elderly folks around, please don’t resign them to the bus drivers because you heard they can ride for free. One granny told us that she had to wave her two dollars in the air so she could be picked up. While those who monopolize the bus licenses are laughing, our senior citizens at the bus stop are rotting for free!

What really happened to bloody elderly
Anonymous (not verified) | Fri, 2007-11-09 11:55

This is what will happen as we continue to abandon our elderly to the streets and buses. It made the front page. But the facts are not clear. Was he competing to get in before another? Was the bus moving as he tried to get in? Did he fall out while trying to get in?
A caller to a talkshow said he suffers from Alzheimers or Parkinson disease. If so, why is he entering a bus alone? Is it because the elderly can ride for free?

Solidarity and patriotism of the friendly island, Irony
sxm4life971 | Fri, 2007-11-09 10:27

Yea we are so friendly but we rather see the elders, the ones who work years for the development of this island roth in the blasted sun. How lovely, O sweet Sxm land,..................
What were they thinking, do they actually thought the bus drivers were be some wonderful to leave an elderly person ride for free. The government have to find other actions to implement themselves in the society rather than making useless, appaling decisions.
The bus drivers who rather see an elderly person burn, dehydrate themselves in the road for a dollar aren't worthy enough to live in St.Maarten. But finally I do understand the citizens of the island, many of them come from abroad but were never taught the island culture, so do they know anything about being solidarity and patriotic in sxm? do they know anything about the Friendly Island, NO!!!!!!!!!!! They know they are here to feed they families in difficulties. Where is the patriotism of SXM, Where is the friendly Island????????

Its been said before

SXM needs a reliable, clean and efficient public transport. Perhaps a public owned partnership between the two sides with drivers (not license holders) given some partnership and stake in it? What we have now is beyond the ridiculous.
The same goes for taxis, legalise the gypsy cabs because the current taxi cabs have no interest in serving the general public as the gypsy cabs do. Have them install meters, with parking as it is in Philipsburg many would be tempted to use them.

Whilst on the subject of parking in Pburg... I think there are now less spaces than before the upgrades. When you consider the lost spaces on FS and BS, plus the ones lost with the New Admin building and along the pondfill road, there is no way they are made up by the new spaces in the lots created in the pond. No way Jose.
