Catergory 5 Potholes

Since a woman died after hitting a big pot hole, we all know that pot holes can be lethal. Only government does not know yet. In the last few weeks a lot of pot holes emerged again, ranging from category 1 till category 5. They are extra dangerous when it has rained, because then they become invisible. Here is my advice to Theo, commissioner of pot holes.

____________________________________________________________

1 Promote not only hurricane preparedness but also pot hole awareness
2 In order to promote pot hole awareness, you should put a sign along the side of roads with dangerous pot holes.
3 Before you are able to mend whole roads, start mending provisionally category 5 pot holes.

Theo, ever heard of the word PRIORITIES? Why don't you stop building and beautifying for a while and start cleaning up the country's mess. Because if another person will die because of a pot hole we will not call it an accident but murder, pot hole murder.

Death equals reaction
sxm4life971 | Mon, 2007-11-05 09:59

Well the law of physics is true: For every action there is a reaction. It's quite sad that this law applies to people's lives. WHy do we have to wait until someone is hurt for us to react, this problem doesn't occur only on the dutchside of the island but also on the frenchside. A few months ago the young man who died close to la Marina, there were unbelievable, dangerous potholes also but nothing was done until............................., yes, until the young man died. I am not saying that was the cause of his death but due to the fact he died in the area where was located so many potholes, therefore they've decided to "cover" up the situation.

poor construction

My own feelings are that the roads are poorly built. Roads should be build in such a way that water runs off them, yet we see everywhere that small lakes and ponds appear in the same places every time it rains. I´m not an expert but I do know that water weakens our roads.
Dirt and stones are also a cause of road destruction, again, we see it in the same places every time it rains, ripples of mud and rocks washed down from side roads and driveways having exactly the same effect as potholes and causing traffic to slow.
Some say that the roads are poorly built so that the contractors, ie Windward Roads and Koop, two companies that have close ties with several commissioners, can be assured of regular work. I don´t fully subscribe to this view, but I can certainly see why some people have it.

I would suggest doing an in-depth story about the natural springs in St. Maarten. If you are not aware, you should be. Case in point: St. Peters. People often talk about the road always full of septic water. Nonsene. St. Peters and other areas of St. Maarten are filled with natural springs. Most of the time the water you see is from springs. Nature reclaiming the natural water way before we came along and built over these water ways. It's too long to go indepth here and I don't have all of the info, but I do know about our springs in St. Petes and other areas. I remember Sarah trying to explain this on radio once but nobosy seemed to get it. But it's true.

yes its true about the natural springs

Natural springs are on SXM for sure, but they cannot be blamed all the time for the poor roads. WR and KOOP should take these springs into consideration when they are building the roads.
These companies have engineers and they know pretty well how to deal with natural springs.
Cole bay in front of AFOO EXTRA has a natural spring, no matter how often they pacth that road , it opens up into a cavernous fishing hole. Other areas of Cole Bay has the same problem but the fact remains that the roads are poorly built, sewage is running in almost every neighborhood, there are too many vehicules using SXM roads, including heavy equipment all hours of the day, so instead of looking for the scapegoat natural springs, can we please look at the bigger pciture here?
Is SXM catering to a heavily over populated island? what is the carrying capacity of the buildings? carrying capacity of the islands roads? carrying capacity of the ponds and lagoon?
The carrying capacity study has never been revealed to the public and the Island Council has never discussed this study, I even doubt if the opposition Island council members have seen it.
I am amazed that people still keep finding every excuse in the book to avoid holding their government officials accountable. maybe if they had proof how much money is being passed to Commissioners for every road built, every project realised they would see that government officials operate as a bussiness themselves for themselves.

The cost
siba46 | Fri, 2007-11-02 09:08

Related to this pothole story I am wondering is the government is calculating the amount of taxes they are missing out on when we are all standing in the traffic jams. As a business owner I have customers to attend to and as long as I am in traffic I cannot invoice the hours (at least not to the customer, maybe to the government) and therefore do not pay any taxes for these hours. Imagine that 50% of all people in traffic are on the clock; imagine the funds they are missing out on! Not to mention the fact that we are running our engines without going anywhere; senseless pollution.
I totally agree that the current road condition is really bad and creating an enormous amount of traffic, danger and frustration. The traffic jam from Simpson Bay nowadays starts at around 2.30pm and lasts till 7pm due to the growing amount of cars and the current road issues. The situation is caused by potholes and general road conditions like at the "square-about" in Cole Bay (not to mention the fact that we all have difficulties understanding how this square-about is handled).
Now with high season around the corner and a growing amount of rental cars being on the road we will be stuck from 7am till 7pm. Tourists are complaining about traffic and we have to avoid loosing tourists because of something simple like road conditions.

3 SIMPLE SOLUTIONS FOR SIMPSONBAY TRAFFIC

Dear Commissioners,

I have always been the first one to criticize those who complain about the traffic. "Yeah, yeah," I would tell the whiners,"just drive between 10:00am and 3:00pm and you'll be fine." "Don't worry, just enjoy the time in your car with your kids." or my very unpopular advice of "Just buy yourself a motorbike and stop whining".

Well, now I have reached my limit of patience and imagination.

I now have to leave my home almost two hours in advance to drop my boys at Tae Kwan Do class TWICE A WEEK! No big deal is what I would have said before; just tell stories in the car, or sing or discuss school... I invite any of you on the EXCO to sit in a car with my two boys for two hours. I bet you don't last 10 minutes.

The worst of it is that IT'S ONLY 7 MILES FROM MY HOME!

I also used to be the one who would tell people to stop complaining and give suggestions instead. Well, I've had it with suggestions. This is your job. Not mine. Mine is running a bicycle business. Yours is making sure that your citizens, those who elected you, are content with the quality of life offered in St. Maarten.
And I am very sorry to say, but I'm going to say it anyway: you are doing a really really bad job.

So, I am going to give you some very practical and easy to understand suggestions on how you can fix one area which is sending tourists home daily (and yes, I know because I listen to them every day of the week!) claiming that they WILL NEVER VISIT ST. MAARTEN AGAIN!

If you would drive from Simpsonbay to Colebay at 5pm ANY DAY OF THE WEEK INCLUDING SUNDAY, you will so easily see what the problems are.

1) The Simsponbay Corner road which every Tom, Dick and Harry, races through from the Pelican Keys road (Billy Folly Road) to take a short cut to avoid traffic. They come out at the Fed Ex building and filter in ever so gently (HA!). This is your first major traffic hindrance. So, easy to fix (Simsponbay residents did it!); make this a one way road with traffic only allowed to exit at Pelican. For two weeks post a police officer of VKS officer at the Fed Ex end of this road and have him collect fines from all those who "missed" the sign.

2) The hole right opposite Pineapple Pete's restaurant (you're welcome Pierre) is causing cars to slow down and swerve into the road. I witnessed a scooter rider almost get hit by a swerving car yesterday. Fix this road and you will have solved Problem #2.

3) The terrible condition of the road right opposite Tropicana Casino building. Everyone slows down here right at the small supermarket with all of the lovely sewage water running along its entrance. This road needs fixing, plain and simple.

Once you pass this third area, the traffic is wide open and flows beautifully.
Please tell me and the rest of St. Maarten that you can fix a mere 1 Km of road to alleviate our aggravation. Our quality of life in St. Maarten is deteriorating and you have the power to do something. So, please, do it.

traffic

Susy has small but significant points which would help.
There isnt too much traffic in sxm its all about traffic flow.
Improve traffic flow and the problems {traffic) moves with it.

My suggestions.

1. Improve the road quality. That doesnt mean to say we have to insist on brand new roads everywhere. The minimum and full time employ of a part of those responsible for roads should be emergency repair, of yes, potholes. There is absolutely no excuse whatsoever that can be given not to do this.

2. Police the roads !!!!!! Un roadworthy vehicles, untaxed, un licensed, drunk drivers are an obvious and daily sight on the roads, and nothing. No control at all. Shame on the traffic police , if they exist at all. And dont go out stopping the tourists and easy targets. Get real about policing.

3. Control the taxis, buses who blatently stop wherever they like to pick up. This interupts the flow. 30 seconds picking up can translate in 3 or 4 minutes half a mile away and so on. Its exponential.

4. Diggers heavy equipment, boats containers. Should move in the early hours
or after 7pm.

5. Put the parking at the airport the right way around duhhhh

6. Stop putting lumps in the roads, commonly known as sleeping policemen !! quite apt really !!

7. build a bridge across the lagoon

8. Stop allowing buildings without adequate parking. Almost opposite the gas station in Simpson Bay is a new 4 story building, with 6 to 8 parking spaces. Nuts.

The smartest move on parking is on the pond fill where there is an entry and an exit. perfect. Stop this parking immediately in front of every buisness

So so simple even if we do have to use our legs a little more

Its not hard. It is acceptable to do these minimums elsewhere in the world

big a.... holes.

Well I have to admit Gerard, those little warning signs would have saved me a lot . Saturday evening on my way to my dear friend Leroy's daughter 's wedding at Westin , my car fell in a huge deep hole . My tire was ripped , the rim (nice alloy) was broken . I had to get out , in the pouring rain , put the spare on and get soaked to the bones.
I missed the wedding, had to spend $ 85 .00 for a new tire. ($ 90. with tip ).And my only good pair of trousers ruined .
I'm going to see with Leroy if he can get Theo to foot the bill.
But after all , I think I was lucky : That hole was so deep , I could have drowned.

Let' s do something!
SAM | Fri, 2007-11-02 21:51

Personally, I will write another letter next week to the papers if nothing has been done about the issues of the pot holes in the Simpsonbay Corner/Colebay area which I truly believe are a huge contributor to the traffic jams.
I noticed that the hole at Pineapple Pete's has been covered up but just with concrete - doesn't look like it will last through one more heavy rain fall.
Please everyone, take pictures of the traffic jams, write to the papers, and bring this to our commissioners' attention. Maybe they do not have to drive through Simpsonbay and are not aware of the problem.
Ha! Sure!
My point is, let's really make this an issue in the EXCO's face.

Blue in the face
Anonymous (not verified) | Sat, 2007-11-03 16:09

Y'all can talk and write till you're blue in the face, fact is all that will happen is patch work. Gov will not carry out major road work now with the season comin up. Simple as that. Letters won'tmove them. Deal with the patches cause that's it for now.

We pay road tax for what exactly? I would just love it if ever tourist writes a letter to the tourist office to complain about the state of the roads, that will move governments ass I guess right?
They don't listen to residents and the direct road tax payers but they will listen to tourists who are having their vacation spoilt by fixing flat tires and sitting in long lines of traffic.
Or maybe come January every resident of SXM should just refuse to pay the road tax untill the roads and potholes are fixed.
Sure we will all get fines, we should all go to court and ask the judge to deal with this issue as a one large courtcase, road tax payers against government who do not live up to it's obligation.

That's a good one!
SAM | Wed, 2007-11-07 20:31

Too bad that I already paid! We can't afford to sit around until the new plates come out. This afternoon on my way home, the traffic ran from Colebay to the airport at 5:30pm. How many people is that wasting away in a damn car? Hundreds?
My point is, this has to be fixed now.
Forget about the bridge across the lagoon - that is a long term project - we need action NOW! In two months, it will be twice as bad with high season. Let's not even think about Heineken Regatta!!!
Someone please help me with suggestions - I am tired and have no new ideas this late at night....

So, deal with the patches then.
SAM | Sun, 2007-11-04 13:50

If no one says anything and sits in their cars day in and day out, cursing and steaming to no one in particular, then how does that help?
We know that no major road work can be done now, but at least fix the trouble areas.
Making the Simpsonbay Corner back road a One Way does not require any investment besides a sign. Works in Simpsonbay, most of the time.
Patching the road at Peking Supermarket would be just fine by me.
ANYTHING is better than nothing.
Are you happy with sitting in a car for hours to get a few miles? If so, fine, you obviously have no life.
I personally have a lot to do.
So, I WILL keep bringing this subject up.
Thank God there are intelligent people out there who don't sit back and wait for someone else to complain about something.

Dealing with the Patches
Anonymous (not verified) | Sun, 2007-11-04 21:01

You are so right SAM. The squeaky wheel normally gets the oil, but then again I feel that people are frightened to speak out in fear of retaliation. Regretably, Freedom of Speech is feared by many in Sint Maarten.

Thank you!!
