A Failure of Confidence

There is an old saying, perhaps you have heard it?

"You can fool some of the people all of the time, or all of the people some of the time, but you can't fool all of the people all of the time."

I have tried give Taco some leeway, I met him once in passing briefly and he seemed like a nice enough chap. But his recent press release about the Loor Trial last week leaves me with a total lack of confidence that the prosecutors office is capable of even scratching the surface of corruption on the island, even if they wanted to.

I have suggested several times in the past that our public officials and politicians do not seem to grasp the fact that they are not talking to children. Taco informs us that no other investigations of officers are taking place. Loor was a one man operation it seems, a bad apple amongst the shiny and clean ones. What BS!

If we had a real media they would be asking him why Loor was removed last year from Immigration, suddenly and without explanation. They would ask why Janchi dismissed allegations of corruption in January only to eat his hat a few days later with two officers and Gordon Yee being arrested. (What happened to those officers?) Why a couple of months later Loor was then put in charge of the Quick Response unit, only to be arrested a few weeks after.

Please excuse me if I rant a little........

Mr Stein, you may well think you are talking to children, perhaps it is because of the press corps you are faced with when making your press announcements. But even children can see the BS and coverup going on, it's as clear as the day. Your office, Dicky and the Dutch do not have the ability, competance, balls or spine to do what needs to be done here in St. Maarten. Gutless wonders.

Oh, and as for the Police reviewing their 911 procedures, it seems today that the blame is on Telcell. Too damn funny, Fernando needs to book these guys for his next Belly Burst show. Over the past few years I have made several 911 calls that never got answered, they were not from a Telcell phone, there are plenty of stories filed here about 911 calls not being answered.

How difficult is it to have a 911 dispatcher schedule, with a back up plan and with all calls being recorded? Too difficult for our justice officials it would seem.

What a shameful farce it is.

Again we are reactive to a crisis instead of being proactive. You're so right, many calls are made to 911 from other cell phoses, which are not subscribe to Telcell and these calls are not answered, not in the the day time or evenings. This is crazy!!!! Even if Telcell incoming calls are directed to the main exchange, the calls should be answered by a Police on duty and directed acordingly.Let's blame Telcell and not the incompetant police department, it's so easy. Why is Mr Carty coming to the rescue. I guess UTS subscribers are happy to know that if in case of an emergency THEIR calls will be the only ones coming through.

NOw what, should Telcell , ECC, SMITCOMS, Amigo, Orange and Digicel send tech guys to put in their codes into the system in order for it to work.
It takes a fire to destroy a family complex to fix the problem. Zenitel who sold them the system and the police department should have been on top of it. It wasn't to long ago that the infratructure to receive emegency calls was put into operation. We expect and should demand more that this lame excuse.
Tommorow it could be U calling for help.

Failures of the "system"

In addition to what you mentioned here is a summary of what all that went wrong the night my family lost everything, yes everything but their lives!

1. No answer to 911 calls
2. No answer to 542-2222
3. Fire dept. 919 is really not known to most if not all residents
4. Fire trucks arrived with little or no water
5. Fire truck hoses couplings didnt necessarily match
6. Fire truck hoses are all second hand and all burst under pressure
7. Gebe cut water to the district hours prior to fire
8. When water was restored, no pressure as usual
9. Gebe had to cut the water to several districts to get pressure to out the fire
10. No fire hidrants in the immediate area

We all know who the victims are, however some questions remain,

What have we learned from this?
How will this be avoided in future?
When will someone or some institution accept responsibility for their shortcomings?
Where is Govt. in all of this mess?

I can go on and on trust me.

Holding people to account

It's something rarely done in St. Maarten, which is why things are as they are. Government is hiding, in the center of it my friend.

I know that it could be my house tomorrow, my family, my life being destroyed, threatened and at risk..

I know that it could be me or someone I love lying by the side of the road waiting for the only ambulance to arrive. It could be me that dies in the hospital waiting room while they wait for someone to bring my insurance papers.

It could be me that has some new development destroying my view and devaluing my property, or endangering it like in Mary's Fancy Gut and Ebenezer.

It could be you too. reader.

I hope there are others out there who understand this and feel the same when I say I support you fully in your quest for answers and accountability.
