SXM Human Rights

A couple of weeks ago a letter was in the Today paper suggesting the a Human Rights Commissioner be appointed or perhaps be added to a current commissioner's portfolio.

St. Maarten desperately needs an independant Human and Civil Rights Organisation, not a political party commissioner who probably doesn't really understand or care much for the job, not to mention the political conflicts of interest that would arise.

What I am interested to know is. Are there any people on the island who would support and be involved with such a organisation? Not only that, but also support it or lobby in Holland for support and funds for it?

Every week something new comes along, last week it was the stranded passengers, I think you all know that I could also real off a long long list of cases that should be investigated and for which people should be held accountable. Young children removed from family and parents with no access allowed, (immigration) the damage this could cause those children could be life changing from such an experience.

Detainees beaten in the police station (apparently) with NO investigation carried out as yet.

Need more....??

No , I don't think you do. We know we need such an organisation. How can we make it happen?

Yes I do believe in having an independent Human and Civil Rights Organization on the island. I personally, have in past submitted several proposals for one. I even went to the extent of preparing a website for it: www.interceptonline.org
To this end, all I have received is political lynchings from those inebriated with the exuberance of their own verbosity. Many feel that my approach is too radical and leftist.
I was in full support of Gracita's proposal for an ombudsman, in fact I believe that there were two motions which I prepared for her in respect to human rights in the Netherlands Antilles, one being on "Rita Verdonk's admittance regulation for Antillean youth." I published a major work on this regulation in the Journal of Eastern Caribbean Studies. You may feel free to read about my work on Prisoners' Rights on the same website: www.interceptonline.org.

I would be more than happy to work with anyone to establish such an organization, as this was a significant part of my postgraduate study.

A Human Rights Commissioner..an independent human rights organization.. yes,of course, it is needed on SXM.
Who wouldn't support that idea?
I have no idea how it could happen, but it is a fantastic proposition...
