What is the intention and/or the reasons for seeking a new status for the island? Obviously you will hear a lot of remarks, positive and negative but I believe there is one theory that most of us are missing out. When we obtain our new status I can assure you that within no time the face of this island will change drastically. This has nothing to do with the environmental issue but with the local population of Sint Maarten.
For years now we have travel from one island to the other island and we have established roots wherever we or our children decided to establish themselves. One fact is that we are and remain habitants of the Netherlands Antilles and in time of problems we can count on the backup and support of the Netherlands Antilles. Now with the new status the dependency of the development of this island is the responsibility of the habitants which has a dutch passport. The fact is that 50% or more of the residents are naturalized dutch. This scenario is unhealthy for all reasoning and pruposes.
As the majority they can force a complete change on the political scenario and tomorrow guide this island into a different direction. This is the reality. The only changes that was necessary was to make amendments to the constitution and the Island Regulation and ensure that the islands carry more responsibility to manage their own affairs. Our constitution was established with the purpose that as the islands developed that they should be responsible for their own affairs. The Parliament of the Netherlands Antilles in a new constitution would be more of a supervisory role then an active one. As such we will get still what want and live happily for ever more.
