It seems most people really don't 'get it' Caribdude, as per usual, your blog posts on Climate Change get very few comments and the most important news on this site, the most important news for ALL of us, is neglected or ignored.
Or is it just as you said before, that it's just too big, too huge, all encompassing, for us to give it the serious attention and priority it requires? What can we do? Sure, wew can turn off our appliances when not in use, we can change our bulbs, be more careful with our purchases, but at the end of the day, it is the governments of the World that need to react and they, as to be expected, are more focused on national self interests and tied up with differences of opinion on how the issue of Climate Change needs to be tackled.
I think, like you, that we are screwed, that we will go down as the most despised generations in history. That does not mean I will give up, I will go down fighting, but being able to say "I told you so" gives absolutely no comfort at all.
James Hanson is the top climate scientist at NASA, 20 years ago he sounded the alarm on Climate Change. His latest speech, on the 20th Anniversary of that warning is really the final siren as the ship starts to sink.
NASA Scientist's Global Warming Warning: "This Is The Last Chance" - 23rd June 2008
Global Warming Twenty Years Later: Tipping Points Near - PDF of speech.
GEBE should immediately announce an emergency review of the future power concerns of the island and where it will come from. The two generators should be canceled, EVEN if a fine needs to be paid. (Roy, the Exco and Brooks should pay!) Immediate high level talks should be started with the surrounding islands and the EU to create a program leading to clean, renewable energy for all the islands as a consortium.
But it's not going to happen is it. We are led by people who refuse to see the truth of the situation, who, like what seems the majority, prefer to ignore and pretend it doesn't exist, or that they can do nothing about it. It's too expensive they will say, or that SXM is too small to make any difference. The first is false because they do not consider the long term costs, the second is immoral and ignorant, because at the very least moving in the direction of cleaner energies would prepare the island better for the future that is coming our way.
Anyway, it's such a drag to be depressed, better not to think about the bad things eh? Just turn on that plasma tv and airco, prepare yourself a nice snack and drink that came from half way across the World and relax. Don't worry. be happy!
*sigh*
