Education is Understanding - Teachers on Strike
The Teachers are on strike and who, knowing how they have been treated, can blame them? They have been fighting for new salary scales for several years now and have been offered nothing excuses and broken promises.
I support the teachers, I think the education system in SXM is a disgrace, schools getting donations to buy text books on hospitality, are you kidding? People give Sarah too much respect, she is very much like many others in her Exco and government, undeserving of it..

Sarah is the 'Queen of Photops, rarely does a new classroom get announced, built or opened without Sarah taking full publicity advantage. Always she grabs it, and the funny thing is, most of the time these new classrooms and computers are coming from Aid money, basically begging. Mostly.
Sarah and this government have followed a misguided policy of expanding schools so that they are cramped and strained when studies have repeatedly shown that small schools to be superior to large schools on most measures and equal to them on the rest. You want to know why so many of the youth today are failing in school and turning to crime and drugs? Go take a walk around a public school, I really see very little difference than when I was there 25 years ago.
Or you could read this news item from a highly respected Criminologist in June last year. Shortchanging our education system is what it is, building classrooms because thats the easiest and cheapest way, it's like building your house out of unwashed beach sand.
Note - I hereby claim title to creating a new way to describe ideas and projects that are cheap, poorly thought out and doomed to misery, "Beach Sand Thinking". I have a feeling I may use it quite often in my writing. :)
Sarah makes promises, last year right before the elections she promised a new school, we can all see that no date was mentioned. It's now almost a year after, I wonder how those plans are going?
The DH's Editorial today, Daily Herald Editorial - Who can blame them? is correct, I think only selfish people would. I understand this strike causes a great deal of difficulty to so many people and it damages children's education, but it's not the teachers fault. They are doing us all a good service, because this is not just about teachers getting the salaries and payments they are entitled and due, but also about our schools. Education is vital to a country's progress and development, sadly these two words translate to 'concrete and money' to some short sighted people.
