Police Crime Report - Update

A Police Crime Report with a twist. Marcel Loor gets a huge reduction on his sentence, Holiday gets charged with defrauding the Antilles and we are still waiting for Marsden to 'Bus the Pot' on all the fraud and theft crimes he claimed to have evidence about.

And then, there is the Head of Police Finance who has been suspended for revealing financial information about Lt. Gov Richards, information that perhaps ought to be public record anyway. Perhaps now is a time to bring up that old chestnut the Code of Conduct and ask Mr. Richards if he is willing to set an example by following it.

SXM Draft Constitution - What do you think?

I remember sometime back that it was announced, by Maria I think, that the draft Constitution for SXM was available online, we looked but couldn't find it at the time. SXM PE posted a 2005 draft copy back in September 2006.

Last week it was announced that a new updated draft was now available in English as well as Dutch, on a website set up for the Country Sint Maarten. I hope there are some legal and educated minds out there who are willing to share their views and observations about it. I have a few to share below.

Angelique Chauvire, Fortuno and Margarita

Photo from Jabiru

Angelique Chauvire's mutilated body was found on the 3rd of June 2006, 3 days after she went missing. In late July, Kathron Fortune was held as a suspect, and after numerous postponements was tried and convicted of murdering Urvin Remigio Margarita a couple of weeks previously to Angelique's murder.

Since then, very little has been heard about the case, until last week. Below I have pasted a round up of news stories about the Margarita murder and trial, you can find more in the Angelique Chauvire Thread. If you have information about this case, please feel free to share it. Most of it ties up with the story I have heard about her boyfriend being involved with shady guys and that her murder was aimed at him. Does anyone know his name or where he is now?

Public Officials - Higher Standards?

Although a fairly new concept on St. Maarten, it is an accepted view in most developed countries that politicians and public officials should be held to higher standards than the ordinary public. So when a department head repeatedly drives drunk, has accidents and clashes with the police, you have to ask yourself if he is the right man for the job.

Small Businesses appeal new Licence requirements

If you are a small business owner and and don't have a Kingdom of Holland passport, then the following rules now apply when requesting your director's license, your residence and work permits too.

To renew their residence permits, foreign directors have to prove that they earned a salary of at least NAf. 75,000 per year during the preceding year and have proof that the business has an annual turnover of at least NAf. 500,000. Also, the foreigner has to have suitable accommodations by either owning a house valued at a minimum of NAf. 275,000 or renting a home for at least NAf. 2,250 per month.

Can you meet those requirements? No? Then read this.. If you can't be at the Chamber of Commerce meeting next week (when is it?) then you can find their phone and email contact info here.

Bodo Muth Lives Again!

Just over 2 months ago I revealed on here a racist neo nazi website i had discovered, run by a degenerate going by the name of Bodo Muth. The site was subsequently taken off line by Bodo admid an uproar, press coverage and information that he worked for a tour company.

I am posting again today to report that Bodo's site is back up again, a little less outrageous and racist than before, but not that it makes a huge difference, It's still clear as day the guy is a simple minded cretinous moron. I wonder if he is still on the island? Anyone seen him?

SXM Police Chief 'Reassigned' - 'Arrested' - 'Released'

I've called for it before and in my opinion the sudden 'reassignment' of Derrick Holiday, the Police Chief Commissioner for the Windward Islands, is long overdue and very welcome. SXM needs change and reform in many areas and this one in particular. Holiday is old wood, like a stick in the mud and times are changing, new energy, new ideas and fresh clear thinking is needed to prepare SXM for it's new status.

Unfortunately I can't scan the papers and sadly the stories from saturday or today (Monday) are not available on the Daily Herald Website, apparently news about a car thief and the Rotary Club are more important. Hopefully someone will be able to add them in the next few days. Seems to me there is much more to this story than meets the eye........

Vanity, Pride and Thin Skins

So now Sarah states that SXM will have a New Status, with or without debt relief. It's no secret that she wants to be the island's first Prime Minister and this statement confirms to me that she will push and charge towards that goal, regardless of the island's best interest. Pride and Vanity.

No need for another committee to determine if the Dec date is still realistic? Damn right there is no need, we all know it's not. As the saying goes, some of these people couldn't organize a piss up in a brewery. I'd like to hear from more St. Maartener's, do you really think these people are capable of providing SXM with a secure democratic progressive future. The walkout by the NA and the exaggerated and puffed up indignation over the Dutch Polician's comments is pathetic in my opinion.

Law and Order - SXM Style

Again and again, basic human rights are abused and disregarded in St. Maarten. Suspects held longer than the law permits before charge, cramped into disgusting and unhealthy cells, sometimes with violent prisoners. Police abuse and incompetance goes uninvestigated and unpubished again and again and all the top management and authorites have to say is that we should support them, have faith, trust.

I don't, I'm sorry. None, zero, nada. zilch!

The sick and twisted mind of Bodo Muth

It is with hesitation that I post this blog because in my 20+ years in SXM I have rarely encountered racism. Yes it happens, there are racists of all colors, but I am not someone who ever considers skin color when deciding if I like someone, I don´t see color, it never enters into my mind.

I have recently discovered a new website that reeks of racism. white supremist racism, started by a german man who goes by the name Bodo Muth. I am white myself and I want to make it very very clear that the link I present below leads to a site that makes me very angry and sick to the depth of my being. I want to make it clear that the reason I post this link is because I want everyone, of every color, to condemn and scorn this man if you happen to know or come across him. He is sick and twisted, totally and without doubt.

Dick and Ballin - Criminal negligence?

St. Maarten often makes me think of Haiti. In the sense that there are so many problems that need serious and urgent action and all that ever gets done is a bandaid gets applied when intensive care is needed. The problem never really gets solved, it just festers under the bandaid until it starts to seep through, then another bandaid gets applied.

Who is responsible for the disgraceful and shameful situation of crime and justice on St. Maarten? Some tell me it is Dicky and the Federal govt and I am inclined to agree to a certain extent. But..... I also blame the Dutch government.

A Failure of Confidence

There is an old saying, perhaps you have heard it?

"You can fool some of the people all of the time, or all of the people some of the time, but you can't fool all of the people all of the time."

I have tried give Taco some leeway, I met him once in passing briefly and he seemed like a nice enough chap. But his recent press release about the Loor Trial last week leaves me with a total lack of confidence that the prosecutors office is capable of even scratching the surface of corruption on the island, even if they wanted to.

SXM Human Rights

A couple of weeks ago a letter was in the Today paper suggesting the a Human Rights Commissioner be appointed or perhaps be added to a current commissioner's portfolio.

St. Maarten desperately needs an independant Human and Civil Rights Organisation, not a political party commissioner who probably doesn't really understand or care much for the job, not to mention the political conflicts of interest that would arise.

What I am interested to know is. Are there any people on the island who would support and be involved with such a organisation? Not only that, but also support it or lobby in Holland for support and funds for it?

Got Water?

Got water? Lucky you! Share some for your dog.

Following the island culture and tradition of unaccountabiliy, Roy Marlin continues to bring us the success stories that bring tears to our eyes. Never mind that GEBE is paying SOGEA (French water co.) 5 Euros per M2, costing the island (GEBE) almost $300,000 from Dec thru Feb already. Seeing as this will continue until Dec, I think it would be safe to say the loses incured by Roy's mismangement will cost the island possibly up to $2 million.

I guess it is only one and a half years late.

Loor Investigation Stops, Money Run Out

SXM News Network

Federal Detectives Going Back to Curacao

Philipsburg: - SMN News has been reliably informed that Justice Minister David Dick will pull the cord into the investigation of detained police commissioner Marcel Loor. The source said that the Federal Government is out of monies and if the investigation continues then they would have to lock up the entire island that is polluted with corruption on all levels.

According to the source, the problem is not Curacao problem instead; it is problem in St. Maarten, which the Dutch should deal with. The source say if the Minister continues with this investigation then there will be political consequences for him and it would be better if the Dutch take over the island and the investigation.

Who Killed Martin Paredes? II

At 4am, Monday the 5th March 2007, 55 year old Martin Paredes was out on the street doing his job, picking up our stinky putrid garbage and throwing it into the back of the garbage truck. Maybe he saw the car's headlights coming towards him, but gave it little thought, not knowing that it would drive into the back of the truck, crushing his legs and ending his life.

But was it the car and the driver that killed Mr. Peredes? Or was it the 45 minute wait for the ONE working ambulance on the Dutch side, or was it the waiting for treatment at the St. Maarten Medical Center while his insurance was verified? A report on the SXM News Network tells us the the driver of the car, Geno Lawrenzi, may soon be in court over the accident. There are others who need to be up in front of that court too.

Trust and Accountability

"A strong right of access to government information is a key component of an accountable government. In the simplest sense, accountability is being answerable for performance or results. Much of the public's trust rests upon the government being openly accountable for its decisions, actions and mistakes. When the government operates in secret or refuses to disclose information to the public, it is in essence stripping the public of its ability to oversee and hold the government accountable. Often, a loss of public trust in the government results from these situations. However, it is the government that first displays a lack of trust in the public -- a lack of trust to handle and understand the information.

Unfortunately, because government accountability often means that responsibility or blame will be assigned to agencies, organizations or individuals, an inherent resistance exists within government. It is this reluctance to risk criticism and reprimand that often gives rise to the deeply entrenched secrecy that exists within government." - Source.

Trust and Accountability = Good Governance.

TB or not TB - Million Dollar Questions.

Tuberculosis is a common and deadly infectious disease, it most commonly attacks the lungs but can also affect the central nervous system, the lymphatic system, the circulatory system, the genitourinary system, bones, joints and even the skin.

Over one-third of the world's population now carries the TB bacterium, and new infections occur at a rate of one per second. Not everyone infected develops the full-blown disease, so asymptomatic, latent TB infection is most common. However, one in ten latent infections will progress to active TB disease, which, if left untreated, kills more than half of its victims.

EWE BV sent back to Island Council

Last month the court ruled that the objection by the wannabe developers of EWE is to be dealt with island council, not the court. The Today had a nice little write up on the EWE Saga, but there were a few things missing that I think people need to be reminded of.

Not least of which is the video of Emilio Wilson telling what he would like to happen to his property, only 550 or so people have viewed it, which to means a lot of you reading this now probably haven't. You can find it here.

Religious Nuts and Fruits

The God of the Old Testament is arguably the most unpleasant character in all fiction: jealous and proud of it; a petty, unjust, unforgiving control-freak; a vindictive, bloodthirsty ethinic cleanser; a misogynistic, megalomaniacal, sadomasochistic, capriciously malevolent bully. - Richard Dawkins - The God Delusion.

I said it in my previous post and I'll say it again, I have no problem with people who keep their religion to themselves, but there are those who overstep those bounds, proclaiming that their beliefs and God trumps all. For too long ignorant bigoted people have hidden behind religion, for too long such people go unchallenged because we are taught from childhood to repect others religious beliefs. Richard Dawkins thinks they should be challenged, I happen to agree.

SMURFs oppose Gaygamel Cruise

I have family and good friends who believe in God, I respect their beliefs and they respect mine, neither side promotes their point of view in an effort to convert the other and religion stays out of our relationship. That's how it should be. When someone starts preaching at me or telling me what I should think, do and believe then I feel offended, as a result they also end up offended when I express my opinions about their beliefs back at them.

The following blog is a frank and blunt athiest's opinion of the St. Maarten United Ministries Foundation's opposition to a Gay Cruise visiting here in October. Athiests are much like Gays, we are looked down upon, scorned, called heathens, condemned to burn in hell and blamed as the cause of society's ills and calamities, we too are afraid to come out of the closet for fear of being discriminated against. These sort of religious fundamentalists used to burn and stone people like me, some quite likely wish they still could.

Bigots, Hypocrites and Homophobia

As I suspected, the announcement in our Saturday papers about the Netherlands Antilles and Aruba having to recognise same sex marriages has brought the bigots out into the light once again. Back in March last year I wrote a blog about intolerance and homophobia in St. Maarten, I felt it had gone unchallenged for way too long. Less than one month later we had the brutal homophobic attack on Ryan Smilh and Dick Jefferson.

I encourage everyone to visit and read this report from The Pew Research Center where you will learn that the more religious and less educated you are, the more likely you are to be a bigot like Willy Haize. His latest about the NA being the Gay Party confirms this.

St. Maarten World Water Day

The UN World Water Day passed by St. Maarten last week with barely a mention, rather sad when you consider the poor state of the island's own water supply situation. Here we are, buying water from the French side, (which has it's own supply problems), the Exco making questionable deals for new water plants and raw sewage in our ponds and guts.
Our sewage problem was mentioned, but you may have missed it. It was mentioned in an announcement from health authorities that Rotavirus has been detected, but there is no cause for concern. Below you will find a list of other illnesses sewage pollution can cause.
