Climate Change and World Resources - Update

It's been a while since I wrote a blog rounding up the news on Climate Change and I had tons of links saved up in my bookmarks, it was time to clear them out.

Below you will find a selection of news and video links that I think are well worth checking out, I've added many more to the SXM PE Global Warming / Global Resources Thread. i don't time to write much about them now, but I think most of them speak for themselves anyway. Feel free to add your own links and comments below.

I can't believe it's been 5 months since I posted a WWW blog entry here, but now that I look through my packed bookmarks in my browser it makes sense. I've got a ton of stuff saved up in there and I'll share a bunch of it with you all below. Hopefully you will all find something of interest, and there's no rush to look through all the links in one sitting, this post will be here tomorrow too :)

Getting the priorities right on crime

Did anyone else notice the front page of the Daily Herald today? The top headline reported a 4th armed daylight robbery in Philipsburg and directly below it was a headline reporting how the police had fined 140 and towed 45 cars in road controls. Is it just me that sees something wrong with the priorities here?

I took a walk down Front Street and the Boardwalk today, I was in town about 3 hours and in that time II did not see one police or VKS officer. I visited a few store owners that i have known a few years and asked them about the situation.....

An Invitation for Expression of Interest - SXM Waste and Dump

For over a week I've been thinking about how to tackle this story and issue, an issue which has been blogged about many times here on SXM PE by various writers, and which I have been delegated to take on this time. It is an issue that the solution decided upon by our Exco will have a major impact on the future of the island, it's people and their health.

It's a vitally important issue, which since the govt advertisement placed in the papers (the DH at least) on the 28th February, nothing has been reported on since. If you missed the ad then you probably know nothing about it, fortunately for you, us 'Treehugger Types" notice these things :)

Climate Change Roundup - 25th February 2008

It's been a while I know, maybe some thought because I hadn't written a blog about it in a while that the issue had gone away, sadly I have to report negative to that thought. Climate Change is still with us, it''s going to be with us for the rest of our lives, and our children's lives too. How our grand children are going to do is anyone's guess right now, I think it's quite sure to be a different World than you reading this have grown up in.

The problem now is that Climate Change news is common, most people like myself who have been paying attention to the issue are resigned to the inevitability of it, it's happening now and it's going to get a lot worse before it gets better. It's no longer a question of stopping it, it's too late, the only questions and challenges now are if we can slow it down and reverse it before it sets off a chain reaction that is unstoppable.

Smoke gets in my eyes.

I don't expect many people took much notice of the news this past week of GEBE ordering new heavy oil generators from Wartsilla. 'Planning for the future' they called it, which really gives you a clue about how far into the future these people plan for.

Oil peaked over $91 a barrel yesterday, this is over 3 times the price in 2002 ($20-$30) and the chairman of BP Capital LLC tells us global oil production has peaked. Watch him on You Tube trying not to scare the talking heads.

How much is it going to cost to do nothing?

"The costs of doing nothing are far far higher than it will cost to make the changes to policy and mentality we need to make now. We are going to pay already, only the cost has not been determined. II'm willing to bet it's more than any of you reading this are prepared to pay." - Me.

It's been a while since my last WWW post, but there are just so many things going on around the world that I thought it was time I posted a new one. This one is mostly going to be about World news, stories you may have noticed in the local papers on on tv.

More and more people are turning to the internet and blogs for news, I believe that knowing what is going on and how it may affect you is the only way to prepare and plan for the future, a future that is rushing towards us and is not looking like the one you see in Star Trek.

Catastrophic Climate Change - Almost Certain.

A rise of two degrees centigrade in global temperatures – the point considered to be the threshold for catastrophic climate change which will expose millions to drought, hunger and flooding – is now "very unlikely" to be avoided, the world's leading climate scientists said yesterday.

Beachfront property - Limited time offer.

I was recently informed that 'Pinocchio' Roy and GEBE officials recently took a trip to Finland to pursue their plans to purchase new heavy oil generators. Really, I don't know what to say about them or their plans that is not insulting and outrageous, so I will say nothing except that I am amazed at the tiny minds constantly being displayed by people who claim to be 'experts'.

Oil is not the future, prices are going to continue to rise and the oil companies themselves forcast dramatic rises and shortages in the coming years as remaining known supplies are secured by countries such as the US, China, India and Japan to name a few.

Will Dean be mean?

16th August 2007

It's been a while since we got hit and the law of averages tells us that with St. Maarten being as much in the middle of the main path as anyone can be, that we will get hit, if not this year, then next, or the year after. That is why I say if you are going to build, build for a catogory 5, because one will come along eventually.

This season has been very quiet so far, which of course I must eat my hat over because I suspected it was going to be an excessively bad one. Changes in the Pacific recently point to a switch from La Nina back to El Nino, which is a good sign as Nino tends to temper and hinder storm formation.
