Caribdude's blog

It's been a while since I wrote a blog rounding up the news on Climate Change and I had tons of links saved up in my bookmarks, it was time to clear them out.
Below you will find a selection of news and video links that I think are well worth checking out, I've added many more to the SXM PE Global Warming / Global Resources Thread. i don't time to write much about them now, but I think most of them speak for themselves anyway. Feel free to add your own links and comments below.

I can't believe it's been 5 months since I posted a WWW blog entry here, but now that I look through my packed bookmarks in my browser it makes sense. I've got a ton of stuff saved up in there and I'll share a bunch of it with you all below. Hopefully you will all find something of interest, and there's no rush to look through all the links in one sitting, this post will be here tomorrow too :)

Did anyone else notice the front page of the Daily Herald today? The top headline reported a 4th armed daylight robbery in Philipsburg and directly below it was a headline reporting how the police had fined 140 and towed 45 cars in road controls. Is it just me that sees something wrong with the priorities here?
I took a walk down Front Street and the Boardwalk today, I was in town about 3 hours and in that time II did not see one police or VKS officer. I visited a few store owners that i have known a few years and asked them about the situation.....

For over a week I've been thinking about how to tackle this story and issue, an issue which has been blogged about many times here on SXM PE by various writers, and which I have been delegated to take on this time. It is an issue that the solution decided upon by our Exco will have a major impact on the future of the island, it's people and their health.
It's a vitally important issue, which since the govt advertisement placed in the papers (the DH at least) on the 28th February, nothing has been reported on since. If you missed the ad then you probably know nothing about it, fortunately for you, us 'Treehugger Types" notice these things :)

It's been a while I know, maybe some thought because I hadn't written a blog about it in a while that the issue had gone away, sadly I have to report negative to that thought. Climate Change is still with us, it''s going to be with us for the rest of our lives, and our children's lives too. How our grand children are going to do is anyone's guess right now, I think it's quite sure to be a different World than you reading this have grown up in.
The problem now is that Climate Change news is common, most people like myself who have been paying attention to the issue are resigned to the inevitability of it, it's happening now and it's going to get a lot worse before it gets better. It's no longer a question of stopping it, it's too late, the only questions and challenges now are if we can slow it down and reverse it before it sets off a chain reaction that is unstoppable.

I don't expect many people took much notice of the news this past week of GEBE ordering new heavy oil generators from Wartsilla. 'Planning for the future' they called it, which really gives you a clue about how far into the future these people plan for.
Oil peaked over $91 a barrel yesterday, this is over 3 times the price in 2002 ($20-$30) and the chairman of BP Capital LLC tells us global oil production has peaked. Watch him on You Tube trying not to scare the talking heads.

It's been a while since my last WWW post, but there are just so many things going on around the world that I thought it was time I posted a new one. This one is mostly going to be about World news, stories you may have noticed in the local papers on on tv.
More and more people are turning to the internet and blogs for news, I believe that knowing what is going on and how it may affect you is the only way to prepare and plan for the future, a future that is rushing towards us and is not looking like the one you see in Star Trek.

A rise of two degrees centigrade in global temperatures – the point considered to be the threshold for catastrophic climate change which will expose millions to drought, hunger and flooding – is now "very unlikely" to be avoided, the world's leading climate scientists said yesterday.

I was recently informed that 'Pinocchio' Roy and GEBE officials recently took a trip to Finland to pursue their plans to purchase new heavy oil generators. Really, I don't know what to say about them or their plans that is not insulting and outrageous, so I will say nothing except that I am amazed at the tiny minds constantly being displayed by people who claim to be 'experts'.
Oil is not the future, prices are going to continue to rise and the oil companies themselves forcast dramatic rises and shortages in the coming years as remaining known supplies are secured by countries such as the US, China, India and Japan to name a few.

16th August 2007
It's been a while since we got hit and the law of averages tells us that with St. Maarten being as much in the middle of the main path as anyone can be, that we will get hit, if not this year, then next, or the year after. That is why I say if you are going to build, build for a catogory 5, because one will come along eventually.
This season has been very quiet so far, which of course I must eat my hat over because I suspected it was going to be an excessively bad one. Changes in the Pacific recently point to a switch from La Nina back to El Nino, which is a good sign as Nino tends to temper and hinder storm formation.

Here I am again with a roundup of climate change news, sadly Global Warming hasn't gone away in the past couple of weeks. Truth is, it is here now and it is here to stay for a long long time, even if we all stopped driving cars and burning fossil fuels today it will not change the reality of our situation.

Hundreds of millions of livelihoods will be affected by declining snow and ice cover as a result of global warming, a UN report has warned. The risks facing people included losing access to drinking water, and rising sea levels, the study concluded.
The findings were published by the UN's Environment Programme (Unep). Unep chief Achim Steiner said the report showed that time was running out for political leaders to reach a global agreement on curbing emissions.

Global Warming and Climate Change are a reality, very few now claim otherwise and those that derided and scorned those who saw it coming have now moved on to a new argument, about what is actually causing it. Their arguments are weak and you can find answers to many of them right here. They were wrong before, they are wrong now.
Most people do not need convincing that it is a real problem, the implications of it are too big to be ignored and once you start to inform yourself you will have few doubts. If you have a basic understanding of your fellow man and the global economic system then the problem becomes so insurmountable and complex that you begin to think that there is nothing you can do. Yes, I'm guilty of this.
Please go and read this article and watch the video too if you can, then join me below for a look at what we all can do as individuals and what we should be pushing the govt to do for the island.

I am still working on the post that I promised a commenter here last week that will focus on what we as indidviduals and as an island community, can and should be doing, not only combat Climate Change but also to prepare as best we can for what is forecast already. It's taking longer than I thought and I will try to get it finished soon.
Meanwhile, news continues to appear on a daily basis, some of it good, but the overall majority of it is not. I'm not going to spend too long on this blog, really it's just a round up of news stories from the past week or so.

Ignorance comes in several forms, the most literal and common form is generally a result of a lack of knowledge or information, which can be cured. But there are other forms of ignorance which are delusional and denial based, where people try to avoid learning more, or push it out of their mind, because, let's face it, Reality sometimes sucks.
Global Warming, Over Population, Depleted Resources and all the problems that ARE coming, yes, even to St. Maarten, can be ignored, for now. You can pretend it's not your problem, you can ignore or avoid having to face and think about it by getting on with your daily life. But I want to make you a promise for the future. In the coming years you are going to discover, sooner rather than later that you have to face Reality, it doesn't just sometimes suck, it also bites.

It's been a long time since I gave up my cable TV box and I have no regrets at all, the internet is my TV, it is my library and my entertainment. The rate of content being added to the WWW is more than anyone could ever keep up with, the variety is totally comprehensive, all encompassing and like Burger King say, 'I can have it my way!.'
Below you wil find a collection of interesting stories, articles, documentaries and videos, comedy, news and music from around the WWW, all of which I found interesting enough to share with you here. Be aware that there is far more content in this post than you can read or watch in one sitting, but you have time, it will be a couple weeks before I post another WWW collection.

"If the bee disappears from the surface of the earth, man would have no more than four years to live," - Albert Einstein.
Today, Sunday 22nd April is Earth Day. Around the World millions of people will be involving themselves with activites or participating in campaigns to recognise this day. Some will be planting trees, some will be holding fetes and events to raise awareness of the environment, some will just be making a conscious effort to use less energy and not use the car. Some of them, scientists and beekeepers, will be trying to figure out why the bees are disappearing.
What are you doing, or did you do anything, for Earth Day?

Those who read here regularly will know that in general I write about global news, particularly Global Warming and the global environment. What you may not know is that I am the one who really turned Flipper onto blogging and encouraged the creation of SXM PE. For that reason I feel obliged to try to give it more of my time.
Everyday I browse the internet for several hours and I often come across stories from around the World which I would like to share here, I will start doing so with occasional Caribdude's World Wide Web posts, of which this is the first.

I've never really understood why the media gives Dr. William Grey and his predictions as much credance as they do, whilst he may be an expert at studying the weather and hurricanes, an expert at predictions he is not. Jeff Masters over on the Weather Underground explains this clearly, the only thing that is reliable about his predictions is that they get more accurate with each update as the season gets closer/older.
Dr. William Grey is one of the few scientists who doubt mankind's contribution to Global Warming, he forecasts that the oceans will start to cool within the next few years. If only his predictions were more reliable.

Well, here I am again, with my latest depressing Global Warming roundup, a mixture of gloom and doom that most of us would all prefer not to know or think about, life has enough worries and stress without adding more. The problems we are passing on to our children seem so huge that we feel helpless to confront them.
I won't deny that my pessimism overshadows my optimism when it comes to the future of our planet and the human race, not just when it comes to GW and the environment, but also in regards to population growth, food supply and the rapid depletion of our planet's resources. To put it simply, if you don't look where you are going, you are bound to get hurt, even more so if you are running.

When it comes to being clueless and ignorant about the environment, St. Maarten is a World Leader, not only with the general population, but more importantly with those who lead, or aspire to lead, the island onwards to the future. The Today reported yesterday from Sarah, that the Govt is mulling an environmental tax, IF Necessary, which can only leave you wondering what conditions would be required for such ideas to get more than a 'mull'.
We already have a full dump, sewerage in our ponds and rivers, garbage dumped all over this island and development ripping up what nature we have left. Is she living in the same reality the rest of us are? Are any of our so called 'wannabe politicians'?

How you feeling? Hot Hot Hot?
Well, maybe not hot, at least not yet, but certainly many people around the world are starting to feel warmer. China and Japan have recorded their warmest winters on record, as has the UK, much of Europe and the US. In fact January has been the hottest January on record, globally.
Atlantic Ocean temperatures have been above normal for over a year, currently they are between 1/2 and 1 1/2 degrees over, not having cooled a great deal over the winter, not good news for this year's Hurricane Season. Add into the equation that the El Nino that helped to dampen 2006's season is now reported to have died out and La Nina appears to be about to make an appearance, then you could say, 2007 could be a very interesting year for us here in 'Sweet St. Maarten Land".
